Good morning. It’s Friday, September 7, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Warner Bros. Entertainment will launch T-Works, an online networking service that will gather all the key characters from the studio’s major animated properties in one environment where they will be accessible to fans. Currently scheduled to launch in spring 2008, the site will include Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera and DC Comics and will feature cartoons on-demand as well as games and interactive virtual broadband customizable elements. Warner Bros. Animation is currently working on two original short-form programs, exclusively for T-Work, with its digital division studio 2.0, one is based on Batman and the other on The Wizard of Oz. T-Work will be ad-sales supported.
Beginning today the KidsCo channel, a multi-platform joint venture of Sparrowhawk Media, DIC Entertainment and Nelvana Enterprises, debuts on air across Romania, Hungary, Russia, Turkey and Poland through recently inked cable carriage deals. KidsCo is slated to be available from next month in Ukraine, and by early 2008 in Asia Pacific, with plans to be in 40+ territories across Europe and Latin America over the next 18 months.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Jennifer Lopez and her Nuyorican Films and Jane Startz Productions have teamed to develop and produce Startz’s original multimedia property The Amigas Sweet Fifteen Club. The comedy will be launched first as a TV show with a line of young adult books and Latin music infused CDs. The Amigas Sweet Fifteen Club revolves around a group of five Latina teens living in Miami, who provide advice and party planning for other Latina’s preparing to celebrate their Quinceanero, or Sweet 15. Startz and Nuyorican’s Simon Fields will produce, with Kane Lee, Director/Development and Production, Startz Productions, co-producing.
V-me Media is starting production on a new 26×30 series as well as 2 direct-to-DVD specials in Spanish and Portuguese based on The Fairies, an Australian children’s format. This will be the NY-based company’s first global production. It will keep the exclusive broadcast rights in the US and the distribution rights in Spanish-speaking Latin America, Spain, Brazil, and Portugal, per C21 Media. This will also be Weta Workshop’s first foreign-language format co-production for the series.

High School Musical 2 will start making its way around the world this weekend as the original movie rolls-out on Disney Channel‘s worldwide. The first premiere takes place this Sunday, September 9, 2007 in Southeast Asia/Korea. Free-to-air premiere dates will be announced soon. Nickelodeon’s fourth annual Worldwide Day of Play will be held on September 29, 2007,when the network and its digital siblings Nicktoons Network and Nick G.A.S. will go dark for three hours (12p-3p) as part of an ongoing initiative to get kids up and active to combat childhood obesity. Nickelodeon comes back on air at 3p with health oriented messaging and the finale of the Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Challenge at 6p (30min), followed by new episodes of several series and the premiere of Back at the Barnyard at 9p. The Let’s Just Play Go Healthy Challenge is a joint effort of Nickelodeon, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, an initiative between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association. Some 1,000+ Go Healthy events are scheduled to take place around the world on this day.
Nick Jr. UK is set to premiere the first episodes of the new CGI animated series, The Magic Roundabout (52×11), concurrently on-air and online on October 22, 2007 at 8a. The series premieres simultaneously on cable and satellite preschool TV channels Nick Jr and Nick Jr 2, as well as on the Nick Jr. on TMF programming block, in digital TV homes on music channel TMF. Additionally, the debut episode can be viewed online from 8a on the Nick UK version of Nick Jr Video. The series will air daily on Nick Jr. at 8a, and on Nick Jr. 2 at 4p. Based on the original 1965 stop-motion animated Magic Roundabout series, the new incarnation of the kid/family-aimed series is produced by Nickelodeon UK, Film Action/Action Synthese/Play Productions/Ellipse Anime for M6 France, Nickelodeon Asia, WDR Germany and ABC Australia. Entara handling the UK licensing rights and plans to launch a licensing program soon.
4Kids Entertainment has inked two new TV deals for its series Chaotic. Jetix has picked up the US cable TV rights for the 3D CGI animated series. Chaotic is slated to join the Jetix programming block in October 2007. Chaotic will also continue to air in the US as part of the 4Kids TV Saturday morning block on Fox, and also offered on Comcast VOD Channel. Additionally, Jetix Latin America has licensed the pay satellite TV rights for that region.
Sorpresa network and CNN en Espanol have re-upped their deal to co-produce the kid-focused weekend news segment titled Que Pasa. Targeted to Hispanic kids 6-12, Que Pasa is hosted by CNN en Espanol’s Claudia Palacios. Launched in fall 2006, Que Pasa features news, information and answers to viewer questions on a range of topics
MarVista Entertainment has completed several new license agreements in advance of MIPCOM. Slovakia’s TV Markiza acquired the TV rights to an initial package of 50 programming hours, including Stone Undercover, Disaster Zone: Volcano in New York, and Cries in the Dark, as part of a 2-year deal. MarVista also licensed the pay TV rights to the comedy The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang to Latin America’s LAPTV, Central Europe’s HBO, and all rights to Funtastic’s Madman Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand. In the animation arena, MarVista has licensed VOD rights to 7×60″ animated classics from Burbank Animation to JumpTV, including Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and others.
TAG Networks‘ games-on-demand channel, TAG, has become the newest programming service to join the ICTV ActiveVideo Distribution Network. ActiveVideo is a network-based platform enabling broadband media to be distributed through television. TAG has multiple genres, including puzzle, arcade, card games, word, trivia, sports, and kids games.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Bandai America and Cartoon Network have teamed-up to launch the Ben 10 themed Release Your Inner Alien promotional tour, which begins today in Toronto and runs through late October 2007. The tour is comprised of two teams traveling simultaneously in customized Ben 10 vehicles making their way to 20 cities in the US and Canadian. The tour will showcase both the Ben 10 animated series and the upcoming Deluxe Omnitrix role-play toy.
Hit Entertainment has entered into a partnership with TTB Marketplace, a provider of custom e-commerce strategy and services for the licensing industry, to expand and grow its e-commerce strategy for its properties, including Barney & Friends, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina, Thomas & Friends among others. Under the deal, TTB Marketplace will assume operations and help grow Hit’s current online store ( www.hitshopusa.com) with more product categories and exclusive product. In addition, TTB Marketplace will work with Hit to develop and execute an integrated e-commerce strategy.
Taco Bueno, a quick-service restaurant chain, will run a kids meal promotion featuring The Magic School Bus, from October 15 through December 31, 2007. All 240 Taco Bueno locations will offer four different The Magic School Bus character molded finger puppets in branded Kids Meal Bags. The Magic School bus animated series airs weekdays on both TLC at 6a and Discovery Kids at 6:30a.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Hit Entertainment pulled in Lori Heiss as Brand Director within the company’s International Marketing unit. She will be responsible for global marketing of Hit’s kid properties, including Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends, Pingu, Fireman Sam, Angelina Ballerina, Rainbow Magic, and Barney & Friends. Heiss was previously with Chorion Ltd in various roles as Head/Marketing, PR and Product Development and most recently as a Freelance Marketing Consultant. She will be based in London and report to Katie Rollings, VP/International Marketing. Hit also upped Lesli Zador to Brand Manager/International from Associate Marketing Manager/International.
