A few hours after its previous contract had expired, Walt Disney Co. and Time Warner Cable struck a long-term agreement for the rights to carry a slew of broadcast and cable channels including several ABC affiliates, the ESPN family of networks, ABC Family and the Disney Channel in a deal that included wide-ranging multiplatform rights. In what could be a model for future digital arrangements, the package includes rights for broadband channel ESPN3.com, giving Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks the right to feature cleared content from ESPN3.com on its sports tier and the right to allow subscribers watch linear ESPN networks on mobile devices such as the iPad. The agreement also includes plans to launch a once-weekly highlight channel called ESPN Goal Line as an exclusive offering for the MSOs, featuring NCAA football coverage. Finally, the deal expands VOD services in many Time Warner and Bright House markets to include transactional content offerings, ABC prime time shows and additional on demand content from Disney Channel and ESPN.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Olympusat’s TV Chile and its owned-and-operated Cine Mexicano network have landed on AT&T’s U-verse TV as part of its Paquete Espanol Hispanic package.
 
Spanish language Alterna’TV has also signed a carriage agreement with AT&T’s U-verse TV to carry Once Mexico (channel 3011), CBTV Michoacan (channel 3067) and Canal 22 Internacional (channel 3022). They too will join the Paquete Espanol package.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Beginning Sunday, Target will begin distributing prepaid Facebook gift cards in the denominations of $15, $25 and $50 at all 1,750 U.S. target outlets as well as Target.com. Similar to Apple iTunes gift cards, which are also produced by vendor GMG Entertainment, the cards can be used to purchase games, apps and virtual goods on Facebook. Social game developers Zynga and Playdom have also partnered with GMG rival InComm to distribute prepaid gaming cards.
 
Last night’s long-awaited 100th episode of Matt Groening’s Futurama on Comedy Central (the show took a 7-year hiatus after an initial run on Fox) was celebrated with a series of viewing parties powered by social television platform Philo. Viewers who checked in to “The Mutants are Revolting” episode via the web or Philo’s iPhone app were able to chat with other viewers along with News Corp.’s IGN Entertainment editors.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Just before the deadline for commenting on its net neutrality was about to pass, the FCC extended a request for further comments on its proposed regulation, identifying two issues that need further hashing out. The questions are whether regulations should apply to wireless internet services (until now thought to be too nascent of an industry), and whether ISPs should be allowed to charge extra for prioritizing traffic. Both proved to be hot-button issues after Verizon and Google issued a proposal for open internet legislation that would include both caveats.
 
Last night’s NY Giants/Pats preseason football game was the first ever 3D broadcast of an NFL game on television. Verizon FiOS1 produced and broadcast the game exclusively to FiOS TV customers (who have 3D sets and glasses,) using Chyron‘s HyperX3 technology. Chyron also provided back-end support to several other 3D sports firsts dating back to last Feb.’s NBA All-Star Game.
 
Video syndication platform 5min Media signed a deal with IGN Entertainment to distribute game-themed content semantically. 5 min’s VideoSeed system semantically matches short-form videos such as game reviews, instructions and news from IGN gaming brands across the 5min network of 800+ sites, including MegaGames.com, GGL, NextGenWalkThroughs.com and PlayedOnline.com.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The U.S. is still lagging in terms of the speed of its average broadband connections, according to new data sourced from the nation’s ISPs released by the FCC on Thursday. Out of a total of 71 million fixed (as opposed to mobile) connections to households, only 44% met or exceeded the FCC’s National Broadband Plan benchmark of 4 megabits per second (Mbps) downstream and 1 Mbps up. The commission also pointed out that demand for mobile broadband is up: the number of mobile wireless service subscribers with full data plans increased by 40% over the first six months of 2009 – to 35 million. Cable modem connections increased by 3% to 41 million and DSL by 1% to 31 million in the first six months of 2009. Fiber-to-the-home connections increased at a faster rate, 23%, while satellite internet connections increased by 6% to 1 million.
 
One reason the Android platform is growing so quickly could be because the amount of vibrant free apps that are being created for it is growing. Google’s Android Market had the largest share of free apps available in July – 60% – according to app store analytics company Distimo, compared to 26% for the Apple App Store for iPad and the BlackBerry App World and 22% for Windows Marketplace for Mobile. One reason for the discrepancy is that developers from only 9 countries are currently able to distribute paid apps for Android, and users from only 14 countries of the 46 countries Android has launched in are able to download paid apps. Meanwhile, iPad users continue to pay a premium for apps made for its larger screen. While the average price of all apps is only 16% higher on the Apple App Store for iPad than for the iPhone, the ave. price of the 100 most popular apps in each outlet is nearly three times higher for the iPad.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Samsung became the latest manufacturer to announce a tablet computer, this one (unlike the iPad) capable of making phone calls and based on Google’s Android Flash video-capable 2.2 operating system. The Samsung Galaxy Tab, launching this month in Europe and due out in the U.S. a little later, will feature a 7-inch touchscreen capable of displaying 720p HD video, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity and 16GB or 32 GB hard drives. A front-facing camera will also allow face-to-face video conferencing over 3G. The challenge for Samsung will be to encourage Android developers to create apps for the device, as it will require special apps optimized for its larger screen size.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Former Adobe executive John Treloar has been hired by Bay Area-based online video platform Ooyala as Managing Director for its new Australia and New Zealand division.
 
News distribution technology provider Bitcentral hired Gary Coats to serve as COO, formerly of Marketron Broadcast Solutions. He will report directly to Bitcentral CEO Fred Fourcher.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Android users just gained a new way to broadcast themselves. San Francisco-based live video platform Justin.tv has launched a straightforward new Android app that allows video bloggers or social butterflies to shoot and upload live fluid video to Twitter or Facebook with a simple click. (The interface borrows from the design of Cisco’s popular Flip video cameras with a single red button to upload, a chat button for dialogue and a sharing button for posting comments.) Anyone who tends to procrastinate when it comes to uploading video they’ve shot to their social networking sites will appreciate how simple the app is to use. Justin.tv has come along way from its “lifecasting” roots, expanding to include live channels from dozens of premium broadcasters. A recent homepage redesign automatically aggregates recent uploads from people you follow and recommends content you might be interested in. The site was also one of the first live video platforms to launch an iPhone app and it proved to be a big hit – it was downloaded more than 1.4 million times in April, its first month of availability, and was responsible for 20% of the site’s new sign ups that month.
