Hulu is taking its show on the global road and launching a subscription offering in Japan, the online video site’s first international market. Hulu has inked licensing deals with CBS, NBCUniversal International Television Distribution, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox, The Walt Disney Company for the service in Japan and plans to add local market content. Hulu in Japan will also be accessible via connected TVs and Smartphones. The cost for the subscription service is ¥1,480 per month or about $19.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Cable network HDNet has picked up the popular Web series Goodnight Burbank and will premiere the first of six 30-minute episodes on October 12. Goodnight Burbank, a spoof of a nightly newscast, has been a popular Web hit since 2006, and claims to be the first half-hour Web comedy. Only a handful of Web shows have made the leap from the Web to TV. The deal with HDNet was brokered by Zodiak Rights.

TV viewers are most looking forward to fall premieres of new shows The X Factor, Charlie’s Angels and Prime Suspect, according to a survey from Yahoo! TV and Entertainment Weekly. The returning shows that fans are eager to tune into are NCIS, Big Bang Theory, and Dancing With the Stars.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Digital entertainment platform provider Rovi now enables adaptive streaming for connected de-vices such as hi-def TVs, Blu-ray disc players, Smartphones and other devices. The adaptive streaming supports advanced programming features including subtitles, multiple language tracks and smooth fast forward. Rovi will market the offering to service providers, CE manufacturers and other players that use its digital entertainment tools.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The government’s efforts to block an AT&T-T-Mobile merger could prove fruitless. Some wireless analysts expect AT&T to divest spectrum in an effort to seal the deal. Analysts have said the DOJ lawsuit stems from concerns that AT&T owns too much spectrum, so selling it off may be enough for the company to gain approval, according to Mobile Marketer Daily.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Online video streamers may be cutting or shaving the cord, but they’re still spending money to watch TV and movies via broadband. Online video subscribers in the U.S. are spending about $50 over a six-month period on video subscription, and less than half that on a la carte purchases of movies and TV shows, said Parks Associates. While that figure is substantially less than a cable bill, it demonstrates that consumers are indeed willing to pay to watch programming online.
 
Google draws more unique visitors, but Facebook leads the charge in time spent on its site, according to the latest data from Nielsen’s Total Internet Audience measurement. Between Google and YouTube, Google sites drew 172.5 million unique users in July, followed by Facebook with 158.9 million. Time spent on Google sites topped out at about 1.5 hours, with Facebook averaging more than five hours.
 
CBS had the most social media street cred in August, the second month in a row it topped the 5 broadcast networks in social share, according to social media monitoring service Trendrr. The network had a 29% share of voice in August, with Fox at 27% and ABC at 20%. MTV bested its cable network brethren for the month, due to its strength with Jersey Shore and the VMAs, snagging 51% of cable’s social share. Discovery was second with 5%.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

CNBC launched its real-time TV app, a free service that lets viewers access CNBC’s TV and online content via a connected TV in the EMEA region – Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The app includes video, real-time market data and portfolio features and works with connected TVs from Panasonic, Philips, Samsung and others. 

A new version of classic arcade game Frogger is now available in the iTunes app store in time for its 30th anniversary, via a deal with Konami Digital Entertainment and games studio Revolutionary Concepts. Called Frogger Decades, the new game boasts five new environments including giant crabs and bulldozers than the main character will need to dodge and evade.

With more consumers turning to tablets instead of computers, our Website of the Day is an app. CBS has launched a Fall Preview iPad app with behind-the-scenes look at its new fall dramas Unforgettable, Person of Interested and a Gifted Man as well as comedies 2 Broke Girls and How to be a Gentleman. The app includes previews, videos, exclusive photos, social media integrations and a fall schedule guide. Sure, you can see some of the same content on CBS.com too, but you know you’re going to whip out your iPad for this one.
