Good morning. It’s Friday, September 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Longtime MLB Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig is moving on. The move takes place on January 24, 2015 after a career that transformed the face of the sport. The league announced that Selig will soon announce a transition plan in preparation for his retirement, which will reorganize centralized MLB management. Selig’s tenure across two decades is marked by overall labor peace, the addition of the Wild Card, Interleague play, new looks for the divisions and the birth of MLB Advanced Media.
.
“I am grateful to the owners throughout Major League Baseball for their unwavering support and for allowing me to lead this great institution,” Selig said in a statement. “I thank our players, who give me unlimited enthusiasm about the future of our game. Together we have taken this sport to new heights and have positioned our national pastime to thrive for generations to come. Most of all, I would like to thank our fans, who are the heart and soul of our game.”
The NFL signed on with Twitter for a new partnership designed to deliver league content to fans around the world via the social platform. The partnership, which is part of Twitter’s Amplify program, will allow fans to engage with customized NFL video content, created specifically for the Twitter platform, on PCs, tablets, and mobile devices. The program will see multiple premiere sponsors throughout the 2013 NFL regular and postseason, including an exclusive sponsorship of the program for Super Bowl XLVIII. Twitter users now have access to a uniquely packaged, seven-day-a-week NFL content programming schedule on the platform, including in-game highlights from NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football as well as clips from other regular season and postseason games.
NBCSN will launch a pair of new hockey series in NHL Rivals and NHL Top 10 that will debut on Tuesday, Oct. 9. NHL Rivals, which will air each week on Tuesday at 10:30p, dovetails off of NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Rivalry franchise to explore the history between the team in the matchups. The debut will feature the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues, who have been division rivals since 1970 and face off on Wednesday Night Rivalry on Oct. 10 at 8p. NHL Top 10 will be a weekly countdown program that will run the gamut of hockey “bests,” including “top goal-scorers and U.S.-born players, as well as the toughest places to play in the NHL and top Olympic moments.” NBC Sports Group begins its coverage of the 2013-14 NHL regular season with three games in three days, beginning with a matchup between the Blackhawks and Capitals on Tuesday, October 1 at 8p on NBCSN.
ESPN reports that its 24th season of Sunday Night Baseball saw Nielsen boosts in both rating and viewership compared to year-ago numbers. The franchise averaged a 1.3 household rating this season, up 8% over 2012, and averaged 1,896,000 viewers, up 6%.
Speaking of baseball, MLB Network has lined up 11 hours of coverage of the last day of the regular season on Sunday. The channel launches coverage with MLB Tonight at noon, followed by Quick Pitch at 8p and a special Postseason preview edition of MLB Tonight starting at 9p. MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger, Fran Charles, Brian Kenny, Al Leiter, Dan Plesac, Harold Reynolds, Bill Ripken and Heidi Watney offer up news updates, highlights and analysis throughout the day.
Continuing the Postseason theme, with Keith Olbermann taking a temporary leave from the show to host the MLB postseason studio show on TBS, ESPN announced that Larry King will guest host ESPN2’s late night show Olbermann from October 1-3 at 11p. Jeremy Schaap will take a turn as guest host the program on October 8-10, followed by Colin Cowherd from October 15-17. Olbermann will leave the show on September 30 and return on October 21.
Major League Soccer is now on Apple TV. The league announced that it will offer free on-demand video highlights, analysis, fantasy soccer advice, and player profiles plus complete episodes of MLS 36 and MLS Insider on the “Channels” section. With an MLS LIVE subscription, fans can access live streaming and archived versions of regular season matches with subscriptions starting at $14.99/month.
Former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason will now become a fixture of The Jim Rome Show on CBS Sports Radio each week. Esiason joins Rome at 12:20p on Fridays to talk the teams, players, scores and predictions for the week.
On Monday, The Dan LeBatard Show makes its national debut on ESPN Radio at 4p. The three-hour weekday program will see LeBatard and his co-host, “Stugotz” (Jon Weiner) behind the microphone as part of ESPN Radio’s revamped late afternoon and evening weekday lineup.

The American Athletic Conference inked a multi-year extension with IMG College to represent the league’s marketing and sponsorship rights. Commissioner Mike Aresco made the announcement, with the deal running through the 2017-18 academic year and includes sales and marketing rights for each of The American’s postseason championships, including the 2014 Men’s Basketball Championship in Memphis and the first Women’s Basketball Championship in Uncasville, Conn. Also included are the AAC Football Championship, which begins with the 2015 football season, and all Olympic sport championships.
The Las Vegas Bowl has a new title sponsor, announcing a three-year title sponsorship agreement with motor lubricant producer Royal Purple. The deal is reportedly worth over $1 million a year and the annual game will now be known as the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl. This year’s game takes place on Dec. 21, pitting the Mountain West against the Pac-12.
NASCAR is partnering with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month via a new, dollars-per-lap donation program and five new film shorts highlighting Latino contributors to the sport. NASCAR will donate $5 for every lap completed by a Hispanic or Latin American driver in one of the U.S. series with drivers that include Aric Almirola, Juan Pablo Montoya, Nelson Piquet Jr., German Quiroga, Miguel Paludo, Bryan Ortiz, Jack Madrid as well as Daniel Suarez. NASCAR Productions also partnered with Latino director Danny Hastings on a five-part series of film shorts highlighting drivers and industry personnel. One new film will premiere on NASCAR.com every week during Hispanic Heritage Month, starting with the first one, titled “The Future” that features up-and-coming drivers in NASCAR’s regional and touring series.
EA Sports is out of the college football business, at least for now. The company released a statement announcing that the company will not publish a new college football game next year, and is now evaluating the “plan for the future of the franchise.” The decision comes with the company “stuck in the middle of a dispute between the NCAA and student-athletes who seek compensation for playing college football. Just like companies that broadcast college games and those that provide equipment and apparel, we follow rules that are set by the NCAA – but those rules are being challenged by some student-athletes. For our part, we are working to settle the lawsuits with the student-athletes. Meanwhile, the NCAA and a number of conferences have withdrawn their support of our game.” Shortly after the announcement, the video game company joined Collegiate Licensing Company in filing papers to the U.S. District Court that it had settled the case brought against the companies by former players.
MLB Advanced Media announced that with no winner for the 13th consecutive season of Beat the Streak, they are bringing back Beat The Streak In A Day Sponsored By Dunkin’ Donuts. Today only, fans can pick 57 Major League batters who they think may get a hit in a game. If anyone succeeds at going 57-for-57 with their picks or the statistical algorithm auto-select picks from the top 150 hitters, MLBAM will award a $5.6 million grand prize.
WWE revealed that the company has topped 200 million social media followers across its networks/pages. The company stated that-based on its Klout ranking-the company ranks as the most influential sports brand on Twitter.
Turner Sports revealed that its coverage of the 2013 Major League Baseball Postseason (stating Tuesday, Oct. 1, on TBS) will see the debut of “Truss Cam” in select ballparks. The camera is designed to offer a unique vantage point by being mounted on a trolley that runs on an up to 360-foot track just outside the outfield wall. The gyro-stabilized camera is able to 360-degree views of the action.
