Good morning. It’s Friday, September 21, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Harry Potter was anything but deathly for the Scholastic Corporation, which saw its revenue for the fiscal first quarter ended August 31, soar to $586.9 million, an increase of +75% vs. the same time last year, due in large part to sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (July 21, 2007), the final book in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.  The 1Q sales of Deathly Hallows, along with sales of the first six HP titles, increased trade revenue to about $240 million from $5 million for the same period last year.  For the book publishing and distribution segment 1Q revenue was $342.5 million, up 200+% over period last year.  That said, overall Scholastic saw a loss of $2.8 million, not unusual Scholastic’s first fiscal quarter given school is out during this time, compared to last year’s 1Q loss of $46.9 million.


The new localized Northern Ireland version of Sesame Street, announced this past May, has a name and a production company and the local auditions for the cast have begun.  Sesame Tree (20×15) will be produced by Belfast’s Sixteen South in association with Sesame Workshop and will premiere on BBC Northern Ireland in spring 2008.  Comprised of newly produced and classic Sesame Street segments, Sesame Tree is set in and around a hollow tree where the new Muppet characters, of which there are two, live.  The Jim Henson Company is making the new Muppets, where were developed in Northern Ireland.  Sixteen South is currently auditioning local performers for the series, including for Muppeteers, with the assistance of one of the most famous Muppeteers, Marty Robinson.  Additionally, BBC Northern Ireland is developing a corresponding website for the series, while NIPPA, an early years organization, creates outreach and educational materials.

More high school musical, but this time it is a documentary (title TBA) about the real drama, both on stage and off, of staging a high school musical.  Showtime, Lionsgate, and Spitfire Pictures partner on the documentary, which will follow three Southern Indiana high schools, and their students, teachers, parents, school administrators and even politicians, as each school pours a chunk of change and energy into producing a musical.  The pressure is increased as the schools are competing against each other for a chance to be admitted into the International Thespian Festival, an annual event for US high schools theater groups and programs.  Written and directed by Barry Blaustein (Beyond the Mat), the documentary is co-produced by Lionsgate, Showtime and Spitfire.  Can’t wait for this one, sounds tremendous.

Rumors no more, director George Miller will helm Warner Bros. feature film adaptation of DC Comics’ Justice League of America, with, per Variety.  Slated for release in 2009, Warner Bros. is moving fast, with casting underway, as it aims to get the movie into production before the pending writers strike.  Aside from Superman and Batman, just which members of the Justice League will be featured in the movie has yet to be confirmed, though most reports consistently have the Flash, Wonder Woman, the Green Lantern and Aquaman on the list.

Dimension Films has finalized the cast of its spoof Superhero, according to Hollywood Reporter.  The Superhero cast includes Drake Bell, Sara Paxton, Christopher McDonald, Leslie Nielsen, Kevin Hart, Marion Ross, Ryan Hansen, Jeffrey Tambor and Brent Spiner.  Superhero will take the Mickey out of the proliferation of, guess who, Superheroes and their movies.  Written and directed by Craig Mazin (Scary Movie 3 and 4), The movie is set for release on March 28, 2008.  David Zucker and Robert K. Weiss are producing the movie.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third Chronicles of Narnia movies, has been pushed back.  The A Disney and Walden Media movie, which will be directed by Michael Apted, is now slated for release on May 7, 2010.  It had been set for a spring 2009 release.


Nick Jr.’s series Go, Diego, Go! is going all right, all the way to Africa in the new TV movie, Safari Rescue (60-minutes), premiering Columbus Day, Monday, October 8 at 9:30-10:30a.  In the movie Diego will help a friend, Juma, save the elephants in the Serengeti from an evil spell.  The next day the TV movie and two episodes of the series will be released on DVD, Go, Diego, Go!: Safari Rescue, from Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.  From October 1, Nick Jr. Video, the broadband video service, will introduce a new music video and 2-minute “sneak peek” from the Safari Rescue.  The exclusive content will also be available on wireless carriers, beginning the week of October 1.

The Cheetah Girls new album, TCG, will have its premiere tomorrow on Radio Disney at 7p, during the Planet Premiere feature.  An interview with The Cheetah Girls will also run.   A Hollywood Records release, TCG will be available from September 25.  Production on the third The Cheetah Girls movie, a Disney Channel original movie, will begin in India in early 2008.

Edgar & Ellen, the animated series about 12-yr-old twin pranksters, premieres on Nicktoons Network with back-to-back episodes Sunday, October 7, at 8p, its regular time slot.  Additionally, Edgar & Ellen star in the Halloween special Trick or Twins (30-minutes), which will run on Nickelodeon in October  (date TBA) and Nicktoons Network on Sunday, October 28, at 8:30p, preceded by a new episode of Edgar & Ellen at 8p.  Additionally, throughout October, episodes of Edgar & Ellen and short-form videos will be available on VOD, with the shorts available on TurboNick.

The BBC is targeting Teens 12-16 with the upcoming launch of several new multi-platform offerings, which fall under the new banner, BBC Switch.

  • BBC Switch on BBC Two includes the debut of two new teen-aimed shows on Saturday afternoons, beginning October 20, 2007: Sound  a weekly music TV show that will be co-hosted by Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac and new talent Nick Grimshaw; and Falcon Beach, a teen drama will also bow.
  • BBC Switch on Radio 1  a new five-hour teen centric block will air Sundays, beginning October 14, and including a new show hosted by Annie Mac (7-10p), and this is where Surgery, the new Kelly Osbourne program I told you about, will run (10p-12a),
  • BBC Switch Online also bows on October 14, the site will allow teens to access from across BBC services including Radio 1, 1Xtra, Slink, Blast, EastEnders, Signs Of Life, an online interactive drama among many others.
  • Additionally, BBC Switch will partner with Radio 1 for a live event for teens 18 and under, which will be held at Wembley Arena this November.


MTV, along with partners the Case Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Goldhirsh Foundation, and MCJ Amelior Foundation launched a new movement in youth activism, Launched in beta yesterday, the online community contains digital tools for mobile phones, online forums, broadband video, digital cameras, and more to become informed and take action.  Organizations and individuals already using the site to stimulate youth activism include the United Nations, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Strong American Schools, Bono, Reggie Bush, and many others. The site is organized under headings such as Get Educated, Get Connected, Get Heard, Get Active, and Get Rewarded.


Jetix Europe has upped Michelle Pearce to Sr. UK and International Licensing Manager, Jetix Consumer Products International.  Pearce, who joined Jetix Europe in 2004 as International Licensing Manager, will continue reporting to Richard Woolf, Director/International Licensing, JCP.

John Eckel has been appointed President and CEO, Alliance, Grey’s branded entertainment marketing company, a unit of Grey Group.  Based in NY, Eckel will expand Alliance into the area of sports marketing.  A 20-year veteran, Eckel joins the company from Creative Artists Agency in LA, where he was Sr. commercial endorsements talent agent.  He has held Sr. positions at a range of talent, advertising and PR agencies including WPP, Hill & Knowlton, and Brandstruck and Edelman Worldwide.
