Cynopsis: DIGITAL
Good morning, it’s Friday, September 17, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Sony announced it will introduce its Wii-inspired Move motion controller on Sept. 19 in the U.S. and Oct. 21 in Japan, hoping to snare some of the casual gaming crowd that has helped Nintendo become the leading advanced gaming console. The Move gizmo will be priced at $50 or $100 bundled with a sports game – significantly lower than the planned $150 price point for Microsoft’s Kinect controller. Sony will also introduce a free software update to the PlayStation 3 that will enable it to play 3D movies and music videos, in addition to 3D games. The news can only help underwhelming sales of 3D televisions, which have accounted for only 5% of overall TV sales this year, according to industry estimates.
Google is planning to introduce a cloud-based, subscription model “music locker” to allow users to store and access digital songs they purchase online, reports Billboard. The system will also offer listeners the option to sample an entire track once before buying, like Lala.com did before being acquired by Apple.
London’s ITV Studios has teamed with game developer Enteraction to create “Corrie Nation,” the fist social networking game based on a British soap – ITV1’s flagship Coronation Street. The objective is to use their understanding of what builds drama among the show’s characters to score maximum points. The game is ad supported, but users will also have the option to pay to purchase virtual goods rather than wait to build up points to buy new characters or buildings.
Financial news site CNBC.com introduced a new section called NetNet to cover inside scoops, trends and breaking news of interest to Wall Street. Senior Editor John Carney will oversee the section.
Dish Network has reached a carriage agreement with Alterna ‘TV for new Puerto Rican sports channel LAS (Latin American Sports). The offering will be added to Dish’s Dish Latino packages.
Video entertainment site Dailymotion has struck a distribution deal with How To video publisher 5min to feature 5min’s catalog of videos throughout its international network of sites. More than 200,000 videos will be organized across 21 verticals including 5minSports, 5minTravel, 5minVideo Games, 5minFashion and 5minHealth.
Check out this new interactive “i-Trailer” version of David Fincher’s upcoming “Social Network” movie on MySpace. Click anywhere on the trailer to reveal facts about the movie and Facebook, such as “Users share more than 25 billion pieces of info with Facebook each month. You might think twice before your next status update.”
Social TV platform Philo has struck its first local media deal. The integration enables TV viewers in the Indianapolis market who tune into The Nate Berkus Show (on ABC affiliate RTV-6) check in via the web or Philo’s iPhone app to register to win a signed copy of Berkus’ bestseller Home Rules.
Peaceday.tv is webcasting the star-studded festivities surrounding Peace Day from Sept. 17-21 with an embeddable player powered by LiveStream. This year’s event is geared toward achieving 8 goals defined by the UN Millennium Development group, from eradicating extreme poverty and hunger to building global partnerships for development. Last year’s inaugural webcast attracted 2 million viewers, according to the site.
Media General announced it will extend its partnership with real estate site Zillow to all of its television station markets by the end of 2010 to become the first member of the Zillow Newspaper Consortium to sell Zillow advertising through its television station sales teams. The company will launch a Zillow co-branded real estate marketplace on each of its television web sites, and sell Zillow display advertising inventory in 15 new markets.
Inergize Digital has partnered with Weather Central and AdPay to offer News Synergy, a new mobile app that can be branded by local media companies for use on The iPhone, iPad or Android devices. Planned to launch during Q4, the apps can be programmed to offer local weather, on demand local news, polls and live streaming video and audio.
Craigslist officials told members of House Judiciary subcommittee on child trafficking on Wednesday that it has removed its adult services listings for good. But the site also noted that offending parties would simply turn to “countless other venues” to advertise their services.
Over 53 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones as of the end of July, according to ComScore – up 11% from 3 months previous. RIM was the leading mobile smartphone platform (39.3% market share), followed by Apple (23.8%) and Google, up 5% to capture 17% of smartphone subscribers. Samsung held on to the overall OEM handset market share lead, serving 23% of U.S. mobile subscribers. Two out of three U.S. mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device through July, up 1.4 percentage points versus the prior three month period, while browsers were used by 33.6% of U.S. mobile subscribers (up 2.5%).
Disney/ABC Television Group and Nielsen have teamed up to create an iPad app around ABC’s new show My Generation that provides synchronized interactive content and social media functionality designed to be used while watching the show. Users will be able to automatically “sync” to any episode (live or time-shifted) to access exclusive interactive content produced by ABC as a companion to that specific point in the episode. Synched content will include polls, trivia, behind-the-scenes insights, production details and social networking features. The application will also allow consumers to interact with companion messages from sponsors.
Logitech’s “Revue” set top box is expected to the first device to include the Google TV software when it is released this fall and Engadget is reporting a Sept. 29 release date for the product, at the steep price of $299. The blog is also reporting that Dish Network is planning to subsidize the keyboard-equipped boxes for its subscribers, at a much more reasonable $179.
A new update to the Thumplay Music iPhone app adds the ability to store playlists and albums in the phone’s memory for offline listening. Thumplay Music now offers offline listening for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry.
U.K.-based open platform interactive TV venture Project Canvas has formerly changed its name to YouView TV Ltd. and appointed project manager Richard Halton as its CEO.
Shari Levine has been named to the new position of SVP/Production for Bravo, charged with overseeing programming and production on all original series as well as oversee the network’s East and West Coast Production teams. She will based in New York and continue to report to Andy Cohen, SVP/Original Programming and Development.
The browser wars continue to get more interesting. Microsoft has taken some bold steps with the beta PC release of the 9th incarnation of Internet Explorer, demonstrated here in a demo website called Beauty of the Web. Its look borrows from the minimalist style of Google Chrome, designed to fade into the background with a minimum amount of buttons. Some nifty user interface advances include the ability to open multiple windows and drag them down to the bottom of the screen to create “pins” of them in a lower taskbar (similar to dock images in Mac OS X.) The company has convinced many of the web’s top sites to build tools and applications for the browser to showcase its visual flare. IE9’s support of HTML5, which enables rich video and animation apps without the use of a plug-in, has already piqued the interest of several video sites (Dailymotion and Amazon’s IMDB site are illustrated here.) But the company has its work cut out to get developers back on board. Developers were once forced to work around Explorer, but with its market share plunging from 90% all the way down to 60% in recent years, there are now plenty of options.
