Good morning. It’s Friday, September 13, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With final ratings in, the NFL announced that the league drew a record total of 108.4 million fans who tuned in to Kickoff Weekend games from Sept. 5-9m marking the most-viewed opening weekend ever. The action saw three telecasts topping the 25 million average viewer mark, with the average game during the week drawing 19.6 million sets of eyeballs.
On the local front, the NFL ranked first in all 30 NFL markets, and topped ratings in 50 of Nielsen’s 56 metered markets. Three teams delivered record-setting ratings for season-openers in their home markets: Washington (38.8 rating), Philadelphia (35.1) and Seattle (34.1). Milwaukee drew the highest rating overall with a 50.8/75.
While ESPN matched a record for Tuesday’s coverage of Mexico/US in a World Cup qualifying match, Univision saw some spikes of its own from the game. On UniMas, the contest drew 3,540,000 total viewers for the broadcast to rank as the fourth most-viewed telecast ever on the network among both Adults 18-49 and total viewers.
Tennis Channel is serving up “bounce style” coverage from both Davis Cup semifinals in Belgrade, Serbia, and Prague, Czech Republic this weekend. Serbia will host Canada while the Czech Republic will welcome Argentina. The network’s coverage begins at 9a on Friday.
Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel is back on Tuesday at 10p on HBO. The newest episode will offer segments that include a look at the NFL’s settlement with former players from the concussion case, the popularity of the Seattle Sounders, and the around the world boat race, The Vendee Globe.
Time Warner Cable SportsNet is bringing in Jaime Maggio to join the network’s on-air team. Maggio will cover the Lakers this fall, contributing to network series that include #LakeShow, Access SportsNet, the Access SportsNet: Lakers pre-and post-game shows and more. Maggio will continue to have an ongoing presence on NFL Network and TNT/TBS.
Chicago’s Comcast SportsNet is bringing in Aiyana Cristal as its newest on-air face for the network’s staple series SportsNet Central. Cristal will handle on-site reporting duties covering the city’s professional, collegiate and high school sports stories, along with co-anchoring the program on occasion.
Comcast SportsNet New England reports that 98.5 The Sports Hub is on the verge of wrangling in the Celtics in a broadcast deal. An announcement of the new deal is expected to be made as early as next week.

The 2013 NASCAR Green Summit Delivered by UPS marked five years of changes to the sport’s environmental footprint, with speakers that included Former Vice President of the United States & Chairman of The Climate Reality Project Al Gore; Retired U.S. Army General Wesley K. Clark; U.S. Hockey Hall of Famer Mike Richter; and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Lead Scientist Allen Hershkowitz. At the event, NASCAR formally announced that it will enter into strategic collaborations with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the NRDC. NASCAR and the DOE will collaborate on advancing the adoption of clean energy technologies while the partnership with the NRDC will collaborate on several initiatives in the areas of energy usage, waste management and food consumption.
While we’re on the topic of racing, the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) announced that TUDOR has been named entitlement partner for the next five years of what now will be known as the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. The IMSA announcement preceded TUDOR’s official U.S. launch last night during New York Fashion Week.
Golf Channel is hooking up with JetBlue Airways and Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lounge to raise $1 million over the next five years to help save the lives of babies in Florida. The three outfits partners to launch the Champions for Arnold’s Kids-Latrobe Classic on Monday that raised more than $200,00.
The NFL, Hispanic Heritage Foundation and Courtyard by Marriott are partnered for the third annual NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Awards Presented by Courtyard by Marriott during Hispanic Heritage Month. The awards recognize the contributions of Hispanic leaders in each NFL market. The NFL will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month during Week 3 of the 2013 season.
WFN: World Fishing Network teamed up with the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), to drive awareness for the waterways of North America. WFN will work directly with NPCA to create a comprehensive program that will tell the stories behind the waterways and the issues facing them as well as actively promote opportunities to improve the health of the country’s Great Waters.
Century 21 Real Estate added another play to its Smarter. Bolder. Faster. marketing campaign, inking a deal to sponsor the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation (USBSF). Through the deal, a Century 21-branded bobsled, along with branding on all of the team’s sleds, team jackets and speed suits, will accompany the U.S. bobsled and skeleton teams during their participation in the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia from February 7 – 23.
CBS Interactive expanded its lineup of fantasy sports mobile offerings with a new predictive second-screen game app for the 2013 football season. The app was built and delivered in partnership with PrePlay, with an eye toward both pro and college football games, allowing fans to predict every down of every drive in real time. Fans will be able to predict every play in every professional football game of the regular season and postseason. Up to 15 college football games a week will be available for play prediction on the CBS Sports PrePlay Football app through bowl season.
ESPN Deportes is about to launch “the first Spanish-language web-based app that enhances sports viewing with a unique second-screen experience during live sporting events” aka ESPN Sync. The app will debut during the Mayweather vs. Canelo fight on Saturday, September 14 and will feature live streams that focus on analysis and discussions of live sports event as they happen, a timeline with real-time scores and stats that allows users to interact synchronously with the event; and videos, polling/trivia, and access to information available in numerous ways, all while connected to their social platforms.

CBS gets a two-fer this weekend, with Alabama/Texas A&M on Saturday at 3:30p, while Sunday brings the Manning Bowl when the Broncos and Giants square off at 4:15p.
