The spirit of online openness continues. Yahoo announced plans to open up its online music site to feature information about songs and artists from competing services such as Apple’s iTunes or Amazon’s MP3 store, reports Reuters. The step will be the beginning of a decentralization strategy throughout the Yahoo network to allow outside content flow more freely into the portal.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Amazon struck an exclusive deal for its e-book Kindle with Lyons Press to publish two separate biographies on the next two potential first ladies. Kindle customers can download Michelle Obama: Grace and Intelligence in a Time of Change by Elizabeth Lightfoot now. Cindy McCain: Elegance, Good Will and Hope for a New America by Alicia Colon, will be available on the Kindle on Sept. 15. Only the book profiling the winning first lady will be published in hard copy form.
 
A new broadcast quality video aggregation service from London-based ITN Source launched in beta offering a library of over 500,000 “rights-ready” broadcast quality clips from partners such as ITN, Reuters, FOX News and UTV. Rights for segments purchased from the site can are available at a 30% discount.
 
A new project from MTV, mtvU and HP called the Engine Room launches on Monday, Sept. 15 as a workshop to foster digital creativity from young designers from around the globe. A short form video series will follow four teams representing Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia-Pacific, chronicling their teamwork and creative processes using HP hardware as they compete for a $400k prize.
 
Call for Content: Online animation community MyToons launched a contest with digitally-focused Hip Hop star Quincy “QD3” Jones III seeking help with the branding of QD3’s upcoming hip-hop/skateboarding feature Concrete Jungle. Original artwork and designs must be submitted by Nov. 21st to have a chance at the Grand Prize, a cash award of $2,000.

YouTube is planning to roll out a new feature called HotSpots according to AdAge, helping producers to distinguish what bits and pieces of their videos audiences are actually watching from which parts they are fast forwarding through. The tool is part of YouTube’s Videos Insight analytics software package which tracks views, demographics and popularity of producers’ works.
 
Bebo’s new Model.Live series is off to a promising start. The fashion-themed reality show, which allows viewers to follow along via video diaries, text messages, photos and blogs, racked up more than 1 million views since launching three weeks ago on Vogue.TV. The total includes views on syndication partners Hulu, Tivo, Tidal TV, Veoh and Juice Caster.

BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion is trying hard to make up ground against the iPhone. RIM announced a partnership with Tivo to offer a series of apps to help BlackBerry users communicate with their DVRs remotely. Initially BlackBerry subscribers will be able to use their phones to view programming guides and schedule recordings. The companies plan to build deeper integrations enabling video content saved to the Tivo to be ported over to RIM smartphones. RIM is also working on a similar integration with Sling Media’s Slingbox.

introduced v2.0 of its LifeCache Social Networking solution combining the company’s LifeCache Social Networking Gateway with its client mobile software. LifeCache presents popular information from multiple online communities including Facebook, Bebo, YouTube and MySpace in a single feed, allowing subscribers to update information and reach out to friends on a variety of sites.
 
AmberFin announces the launch of the latest version of its iCR software, an open-standards platform that can digitize and archive video content. AmberFin iCR 4.0 includes SD/HD ingest with integrated review and quality control and offers improved interoperability with Apple Final Cut Pro and Avid editing systems.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
MTV Networks will launch its first-ever mobile video ads on carrier-operated premium VOD services, with U.S. Air Force signed on as the first advertiser. The Air Force pre-roll ads will run across MTV’s mobile VOD programming and drive to the Air Force co-branded episodes of MTV’s made-for-mobile series The How To Show.
 
Glam Media introduced its newest vertical online network Glam Black Life – its first focused on the lifestyles of African American women. The network is made of more than 50 blogs including TheYBF.com, Shake Your Beauty, Afrobella and Brown Girl Gumbo. Lexus has agreed to be the network’s charter advertiser.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Video ad network ScanScout tapped former About.com founder Bill Day to serve as its new CEO, reports Adweek. Bill has spent the last year at Seattle-based Marchex where he was Chief Media Officer. He replaces Founder Waikit Lau who had been serving as interim CEO. Waikit will return to his former role as President.

Bear with us – this is more of a celebrity selection of the day. As we all know controversy tends to fuel the viral fire online. (That is if the video is embeddable and sharable.) It’s very interesting how Sarah Palin is making her presence felt in the world of online video these days. The medium is turning out to be a perfect vehicle for Hollywood types to make their opinions known about the woman who could be “a heartbeat away” from the Oval Office:

  • FunnyorDie.com has weighed in with a classic faux infomercial starring Gina Gershon
  • Taking a page from Steven Colbert, Monty Python funnyman Michael Palin has also thrown his hat into the ring for the job, even though he’s a British citizen
