Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/28/11
Good morning, it’s Friday, October 28, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
In news that Groupon does not want to hear, Google has partnered up with 14 daily deals providers. These partnerships will allow Google Offers to tailor the deals experience for its customers. Users get an option to complete a quiz which asks about their preferences, where they live, work and hang out and the types of deals they want to see. The selections will then be used to create a personalized email with multiple relevant deals from partners to the user’s inbox. Google will also be the middle man for redemptions and payments to remove the hassle of a user having to remember from which provider they received a certain deal. The enhanced offering will launch in San Francisco and then be rolled out across other markets in the coming weeks. For what it’s worth, Groupon has also recently gotten in on the personalization game, asking customers for information via pop-up bubbles on the site.
The Golf Channel will debut its “Social Media Saturday” interactive programming initiative during the Nationwide Tour Championship this weekend. What does it entail? First, GolfChannel.com‘s two senior writers will join the on-air broadcasting team by contributing live tweets from the course that will show up via an on-screen graphic. Furthermore, during select segments, the channel will replace the traditional play-by-play with Twitter feeds over live pictures and sounds from the golf course. Viewers can also follow all the tweets by visiting the website or searching #SocialSat on Twitter.
The Flaming Lips will be honoring the late Steve Jobs by performing a cover of The Beatles’ “Revolution” at MTV‘s O Music Awards on October 31. The pre-taped performance was recorded entirely by multiple iPads. The ceremony will stream live at OMusicAwards.com. MTV will also broadcast the opening of the show.
Dave Coulier and Jodie Sweetin from Full House and some cast members from Saved by the Bell are uniting for a new five-part web series called Can’t Get Arrested. Taking a leaf out of the Curb Your Enthusiasm meta-playbook, the actors will play versions of themselves trying to rekindle their careers via tabloid-baiting antics. The five-episode series launches on October 31 with a new episode debuting each week.
Open Range, a startup which had received government funding backed by policy initiatives from both the Bush and Obama administrations to bring high-speed internet access to rural areas, has filed for bankruptcy, says The Washington Post. The company was backed by $267 million in loans from the Agricultural Department, $74 million of which it has failed to repay and will become the responsibility of taxpayers. The news has been met with sharp criticism from Washington, D.C. with some politicians calling for a House investigation.
PointRoll has received accreditation from the Media Rating Council (MRC) for the company’s display and rich media advertising impression and click measurement. The MRC accreditation signifies that PointRoll follows industry-accepted standards for digital media measurement, including the IAB’s Measurement Guidelines and the MRC’s own Minimum Standards for Media Ratings Research.
Google completed 57 deals in the first nine months of 2011 for $1.4 billion, the web giant reported in a filing with the SEC. When compared to last year, Google has already surpassed the number of deals (48 in 2010), but has spent less ($1.8 billion in 2010). These numbers don’t include the company’s purchase of Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion because it is still under review and may not be completed until next year.
The network failures that caused large-scale blackouts across five continents for BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion have resulted in separate class-action lawsuits in both the U.S. and Canada. According to Reuters, the suits claim that RIM has not adequately compensated customers for the loss in service.
A new bill, called the Stop Online Piracy Act, was introduced by lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives that seeks to make websites accused of copyright-infringement essentially disappear, reports CNET. The measure will give the DOJ authority to seek a court order against a transgressing website and serve the order via search engines, Domain Name System providers and online ad firms. Those organizations would then have to take the target site off their system, effectively making it disappear. The bill is championed by major Hollywood studios, the DGA and SAG, music publishers and influential committee heads on Capitol Hill. Unsurprisingly, web companies are not too fond of this development. In fact, Google chairman Eric Schmidt vowed in May that the search giant will fight such a bill, even if it becomes a law.
Real-time bidding (RTB) will grow to be a $5 billion business by 2015, according to data from IDC as reported by eMarketer. In fact, while forecasts indicate that RTB will account for $1 billion in online ad expenses, a mere fraction of total online and display ad spends, it still represents an increase of 203% over 2010. The double-digit growth will continue to 2015, where the study predicts one in four display ad dollars will go towards real-time bidding.
ESPN and Nokia announced the introduction of a new ESPN app specifically designed for Nokia’s Windows Phone platform and Metro user interface that will launch in early 2012. The ESPN Hub app will come pre-installed on millions of Nokia Windows Phone devices and will be able to generate locally-relevant and personally customizable content for users.
Halfbrick and Apple are offering Jetpack Joyride for free through a Facebook promotion. Any user who “likes” the Apple App Store fan page will receive a free download code for the game. The number of available codes is limited.
Richard Kerris will be Nokia‘s new Global Head of Developer Relations. The former VP of worldwide developer relations at Hewlett-Packard, Kerris will now be responsible for Nokia’s entire mobile portfolio, including the company’s newest partner Windows Phone, says AllThingsD.
