Good morning, it’s Friday, October 24, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Chief executives from ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC highlighted their concerns about interference that could come as a result of the FCC’s plan to utilize “white space” spectrum for a new generation of mobile broadband devices. In a letter addressed to FCC chairman Kevin Martin, News Corp. President-COO Peter Chernin, Walt Disney President-CEO Robert Iger, CBS Corp. President-CEO Leslie Moonves and NBC Universal President-CEO Jeff Zucker urged the commission to follow standard practice and seek public comment and peer review of an engineering field report released last week by the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
Using the Tivo platform to rent movies is becoming a legitimate option for home viewers. Beginning this week indie films and festival favorites from online movie download service Jaman.com are available directly from a broadband connected Tivo, many priced at $1.99. Next week an integration with CinemaNow will also make a number of mainstream Disney films available, including animated classics like Dumbo and box office hits such as Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest. Both menus of movies are accessible directly from the Tivo remote. Add these options to Amazon’s 40,000 Video On Demand titles and you have quite a selection.
Gaming confab E3 is returning to its big bash roots inviting hardcore gaming fans back into the fold for next year’s event, scheduled at the LA Convention Center for June 2-4. The Electronic Software Association made the decision to close E3 to fans in 2007 and has since seen much of enthusiasm around the event dissipate.
Comcast’s online and VOD network FEARnet will launch the original The Dark Path Chronicles on Nov. 6 – written and directed by Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary I and II, The Attic) – following the journey of a newly awakened vampire and a teen girl. FEARnet will also be profiling 10 new locales this month in a second go around of Street of Fear produced by Atlas Media Corp. Ghost stories behind true places are explored such as Mt. Misery Road in Huntington NY, where a Woman in White was supposedly burned alive in a hospital fire and still haunts the area.
CBS Interactive’s business-themed BNET.com launched a localized Chinese version of the site featuring original articles focused on management, finance, investment strategy and manager lifestyle issues.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Professional social network LinkedIn announced a new injection of $22.7 million in funding from Goldman Sachs, McGraw-Hill and SAP’s venture capital division, as well as previous investor Bessemer Venture Partners. The company also unveiled a new network targeting business-to-business market researchers, reports Mediapost.
Bebo‘s latest interactive series Chelsey:OMG! launched this week, its first crack at the comedy genre produced by Channel X. The fish-out-of-water tale stars Kelly Anne Lyons as a rich American girl who is forced to adapt to British culture.
Healthy lifestyle/social networking site melslife.com launched this week from Richmel Media, offering advice and resources on everything from how to plan meals to how to find socially-relevant business and charities. A healthy selection of video is highlighted by some great Vegan desert recipes including ones for chocolate chip cookies and triple chocolate cake.
Call for Content: Web TV platform Babelgum is hosting a new Music Video Awards competition with Music Nation, calling for independently produced music videos. Babelgum users will vote up semi-finalists and a celebrity jury will pick the winners; top prize is a record development deal with Universal Music UK. Submissions are open now through the Nov. 16. Screening and voting begin on Nov. 17.
~ GADGETS & APPS ~
Samsung will add two new devices that will play Netflix digital downloads. Like the LG player announced earlier this year, the $400 BD-P2500 and BD-P2550 also double as Blu-ray disc players. Both players feature 1080p playback, 7.1-channel sound output and a wired broadband connection. More than 12,000 titles are now instantly available from Netflix.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
Recently acquired photo archive Getty Images purchased rival Jupiter Media‘s online images business Jupiterimages for $96 million in cash. Jupiter Media will continue to operate its online media business, which consists of internet.com and EarthWeb.com for IT and business professionals; DevX.com for developers; and Mediabistro.com and Graphics.com for media and creative professionals.
Meanwhile upstart online stock photo outlet Shutterstock launched a celebrity program dubbed Red Carpet. Shutterstock is a subscription-based photo agency that distributes royalty-free images to its subscribers, relying on submissions uploaded by a network of freelance photographers.
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
Google introduced a major upgrade to its free Google Analytics service to compete with offerings from competitors in the marketplace such as Omniture and WebTrends. New features include a trend analyzer that maps site visitor behavior, advanced segmentation tools, motion charts and geotargeting info that identifies users’ most lucrative markets. ~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Nielsen Online announced it has competed its first phase of audits with the Media Ratings Council focused on accrediting internet measurement data collection processes including data capture, recording and transmission, post transmission data editing and meter systems development. Nielsen says the MRC is moving actively through additional phases of the auditing process including evaluating its new VideoCensus product.
~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
Like twitter media sharing network Zannel is designed to facilitate quick back and forth discussions among communities. But instead of just bursts of text, users are also able to post pictures and videos. (Your phone does so much more than SMS, after all.) Adding multimedia to tweets, as it were, gives the platform so much more substance. The whole microblogging trend is still a fad looking for a business model, but Zannel is a platform that could have real potential if it proves itself invaluable to established brands who will pay to get in front of such a plugged in community. So far Zannel users love to use the platform to take photos and videos of unexpected events they encounter. The key may be to come up with specific events to give the company a chance to line up sponsors beforehand. For instance this week Zannel released two politics-themed channels Politics Red and Politics Blue where individual can post and receive updated, real-time alerts to followers. Citizen journalists post new video, images or text to the channels from the campaign trail. There’s some interesting stuff up here because the Zannel community has a mixture of bloggers and accredited individuals following the presidential race, some with backstage access into each candidate’s campaign.
