Microsoft, private equity firm Silver Lake Partners and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board are putting together a proposal to buy Yahoo, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Apparently, at least nine equity firms have been taking a look at Yahoo in order to see if there is a viable opportunity for a potential buyout of the media company. The report identifies Microsoft’s interest in the future of Yahoo as still being significant, largely driven by both companies’ recent web-based search advertising partnership. In fact, under the proposal currently being discussed, Microsoft would front most of the money for the purchase. Yahoo shares have fallen nearly 44% since it rejected Microsoft’s 2008 attempted takeover. Keep in mind though that the firms have given no indications that this deal will definitely happen. But for what it’s worth, it is one of many that are currently being discussed amongst potential bidders.


Spike TV will telecast live coverage from the Consumer Electronics Association‘s 2012 International CES in Las Vegas, which runs from January 10-13, 2012. In addition to the live coverage, Spike will also produce CES All-Access Live, which will offer more than 12 hours of 2012 CES coverage to fans of the trade show across multiple platforms.
Zap2it, the TV information site, and SocialGuide, the social TV measurement site, have inked an agreement that will bring SocialGuide’s modules to Zap2it’s audience in order to provide them with real-time information on the TV shows people are watching and talking about on Twitter and Facebook. In exchange, SocialGuide is linking its user base to Zap2it’s editorial content.
Evolve Media Group has acquired and will make the popular online pregnancy community, comprising of more than 170,000 active members, part of its Momtastic division. This acquisition follows a similar one where Evolve Media purchased, a U.K.-based online pregnancy community.
MTV Latin America’s TV network Tr3s: MTV, Musica y Mas and T-Mobile USA have set up a contest that will let one fan go to the 2011 MTV EMAs. Tr3s cameras will document the winner’s experience as he or she serves as an official correspondent for the network. The winner will also use the Samsung Galaxy S II to record videos and the HTC Amaze 4G to take pictures, both of which are T-Mobile 4G smartphones, during the trip. For all MTV‘s Jersey Shore fans, J-Woww has a new personal website that launched yesterday, coinciding with the season finale of the reality show, during which she hosted a live-chat with her fans. The website will be dedicated to providing fans daily personal updates and content about the reality TV star.


The IAB Mobile Marketing Center of Excellence has published the final version of Mobile Rich Media Ad Interface Definitions or MRAID. The purpose of the initiative is to define a common API for mobile rich media ads by setting up guidelines in order to ensure that the mobile marketplace establishes levels of consistency in how ads are produced, developed and presented.
Cooliris is bringing the 3D Ad platform created by AdJitsu, its own standalone business unit, to Editions by AOL, a free daily and customizable iPad magazine. For an example of the unique benefits of this new ad experience, viewers of the ad that will show up in Editions will be able to examine a 3D model of the product being advertised by breaking it down layer-by-layer, disassembling and reassembling it as they see fit.
Here’s something cool: If you have Entertainment Weekly‘s Must List app, you can read the pilot script of ABC‘s Once Upon a Time, which premieres this Sunday, from within the app by clicking on an in-app ad for the TV show, reports AdWeek. The ad will be available until Oct. 31. It is the latest social-based offering from the magazine, as it’s previously attempted to engage social audiences by launching a program that offered discounts at the Gap to users who checked-in to GetGlue.


According to the results of a study on social media usage from comScore, 72.2 million Americans accessed social networking sites or blogs on their mobile device in August 2011, an increase of 37% over the previous year. As a matter of fact, over 39.8 million Americans visited social sites or blogs every day, which itself is an increase of 58% from the previous August. In terms of method of access, while the use of mobile browser saw a 24% jump, the use of applications spiked 126%.
The Nielsen Cross-Platform Report for the second quarter of 2011 finds that 48% of Americans watch video online, compared to 97% for traditional TV and 10% for mobile. Other interesting findings from the report include:
Traditional TV viewing achieved a year-over-year increase of 2 hours and 43 minutes per month.

  • 72% of U.S. TV households pay for both a cable-plus subscription and broadband internet.
  • Over the past two years, “timeshifted” viewing (DVR/on-demand) of TV shows has jumped 31%, with consistent growth.
  • Dallas has the highest DVR penetration.
  • The East South Central region (Tennessee, Alabama, etc.) spend the most time watching online video.
  • New Orleans watches traditional TV the most.



The Weather Channel
has a brand-spanking new free iPad app with a host of new features including background images that change depending on the weather outside, an integrated news and social tab, an interactive 3D globe with a spinning map view and, of course, a bountiful amount of weather data and information.
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) Digital Network, in conjunction with XOS Digital and RIM, has released an upgraded 2011-12 SEC Mobile app for BlackBerry. The app provides information and content for fans of the college sports conference and is available to download for free.
Peace Point Entertainment Group
has launched the Olson Recipe Maker, a mobile app from celebrity chefs Anna and Michael Olson that lets users enter ingredients, and then generates recipes and provides step-by-step instructions for creating dishes using those ingredients. The app also comes with short “How To” videos from the chefs offering cooking advice. It’s $3.99 for iOS, $3.80 for Android and will be available soon for the BlackBerry.


Callaway Digital Arts, a maker of children’s mobile apps, has selected former Electronic Arts Japan president Rex Ishibashi to be its next Chief Executive Officer. Nicholas Callaway, the former CEO will slide over to be the company’s new Chief Creative Officer.

One Kings Lane, a start-up that seeks to sell high-end home furniture via one-day sales online, has hired former eBay VP of managed marketplace and seller experience, Dinesh Lathi, as its new Chief Financial Officer. Last month, company raised $40 million at a $400 million total valuation.

One of my favorite things about the holiday season, aside from annoying my family and devouring excessive amounts of coma-inducing food, is the rise in opportunities for all of us to be charitable in some way. Tapping into this seasonal spirit, Publishers Clearing House, a company that donates 40% of its profits to charitable causes, has come out with a great Facebook campaign encouraging you to help it pick the recipient of its next donation. Called The Give Back, PCH has set up a two-part voting process where you vote on ten different causes ranging from Help the Homeless to Support Our Troops. Then, the top three causes move on to the second round, in which you select one of three charities, each representing a top three cause, to receive a $25,000 donation. The runners-up will receive a donation of $2,500 each. And as if the act of giving wasn’t exciting enough, PCH will also be offering a $5,000 sweepstakes (that’s a lot of turkeys) to every participant.
