Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 12, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from from the pavilions, hotels, restaurants, benches, stairs, beaches, hallways and any other spare corner at MIPCOM, Cannes, France.

MIPCOM

Showcase Entertainment heads home from MIPCOM having inked several deals for the kid/tween targeted live-action series, Flight 29.  The series (30×30) has been picked up by MNET (South Africa), which will debut the program in early 2008, and pub-caster TVP (Poland).

Granada International has been named as the international distributor (excluding the UK and France) for the K6-11 series Pinky & Perky (52×13), the popular pig puppet brothers.  Granada will launch the property for the international marketplace at MIP-TV in April 2008.  Commissioned by CBBC in the UK and France 3, the new series finds Pinky & Perky hosting their own kid’s TV variety type show, featuring games, cartoons, celebrity guests and a dunking tank.  ITV DVD acquires the home entertainment rights and will release the debut DVD in 2008.  The series is co-produced by Pinky & Perky Enterprises, Method Films and DQ Entertainment.  The veteran pink pig puppet performers made their first appeared on TV in the late 1950s, which was followed by two successive TV series that ran on the BBC for a dozen or so years, before moving over to Thames TV where the show aired until the early 1970s.  The porcine pair returned to TV with a short-lived series in the 1990s.

Heading home from across the pond today and … Three reasons you might be glad I came to Cannes this year to attend MIPCOM this year

  • Lots more news for you to read (you love it, I know you do)
  • Some nifty new shows and deals are on the way (I’ve been sworn to secrecy on a few things)
  • More people to confirm that I truly exist and can be seen in daylight without penalty (but I avert my eyes)

Three reasons I’m glad I attended MIPCOM for a full week

  • No need to cram 2,000 meetings into one day, when the regular 1350 will suffice (like you didn’t know that)
  • I saved Beatrice McMillan, Marvista’s VP/International Sales, from a bee in search of a victim (oh yeah, I’m brave)
  • My husband, with the kids and dog for the week, emailed to say, “I can’t believe you work and do this every week while I’m traveling?” (umm, DUH!)

 
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Production has begun on Disney Channel’s new Playhouse Disney animated series Special Agent Oso, which stars actor Sean Astin as the voice of Oso.  The series features a mix of digital cut-out, 3D, Photoshop and Flash Animation.  The preschool series follows the adventures of Oso, a fuzzy bear and somewhat bumbling special agent-in-training, as viewers at home use their observational, logic and processing skills to help Oso complete his missions.  Walt Disney Television Animation produces Special Agent Oso; with series creator Ford Riley also serving as executive producer, and Jamie Mitchell as director and co-executive producer.

Australian based Great Western Entertainment has set up a team of production, investment and broadcast partners for production of its new kid/family targeted live-action sci-fi series Stormworld (26×30).  Production is set to begin in January 2008, with filming taking place on location in Perth, Singapore, Vancouver and the Kimberley coast in Northwest Australia.  Created by writer John Goldsmith and co-producer Paul Barron, the series revolves around the adventures of two Canadian teens as they travel between worlds.  Vancouver’s Brightlight Pictures Inc. will serve as co-produce Stormworld with Great Western under GWE’s WiKKiD.tv brand, Singapore’s TheatreRed also joining the project.  Daro Film Distribution of Monaco will distribute Stormworld worldwide.  Scheduled to launch at MipTV in April 2009, Daro has inked pre-sales to Ireland, Romania and Hungary.   The Canadian co-producers are Brightlight’s Stephen Hegyes and Shawn Williamson with Ian Hogg of TheatreRed as co-executive producer.  On the financing side, supporting the production is Film Finance Corporation of Australia, the Media Development Authority of Singapore, TheatreRed, ScreenWest and Lotterywest (WA), Australia’s Nine Network, ABC-TV and Disney Channel Australia; Daro Film Distribution; and Canada’s CTV (Space Channel).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Joining Boomerang is the animated series The Batman.  The Batman will air (commercial-free as always on the network) Monday through Sunday during Boomeraction, the network’s late-night programming block, beginning October 15 at 11:30p.  Based on the DC Comics characters, Warner Bros Animation produced The Batman in 2004 for air on Kids’ WB and Cartoon Network.

PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go celebrate Halloween on October 31, 2007, with holiday themed episodes, games and information for parents, one the PBS Parents website, about fun, learning and tips for a safe Halloween.  Additionally, beginning mid-month the PBS Kids and Kids Go websites will feature Halloween-themed creative activities.

The preschool music-based series Mustard Pancakes premieres today on ION Television today, Friday, October 12, 2007, at 2:30p.  Mustard Pancakes previously aired on public television stations.

CosmoGirl!, the teen-girl centric Hearst Magazine publication, has teamed with Makena Technologies, the folks behind the social virtual world There.com, to launch CosmoGirl launch into the virtual world category.  The CosmoGirl Village is schedule to open in There.com on November 20, 2007.  There is no fee for either There.com or CosmoGirl Village, which is for users 13+.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Mattel’s American Girl is headed to video games under a new agreement that gives THQ Inc. the video game publishing rights to the property.  Published by THQ’s ValuSoft division, the first games in the American Girl series are based on the new character Julie Albright, a girl growing up in 1970s San Francisco.  Shipping this week for North America is the first game, Julie Saves the Eagles, for Windows PC.  Two other American Girl games are in the works, Julie Finds A Way for Nintendo DS is set for release later this fall, and a game that is based on the “to be announced” 2008 Girl of the Year character for Windows PC that is set for early 2008.

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products taps JAKKS Pacific as the domestic master toy license for SpongeBob SquarePants.  JAKKS plans include launching a line of collectible micro figures, and plush toys based on porous one and his pals.  Other categories covered under the deal include playsets, preschool toys, youth electronics, water toys, and novelty items among others.  Look for the line to rollout in 2008.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Electronic Arts is to acquire VG Holding Corp, which in turn owns BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios, under a new deal with Elevation Partners, that cost EA upwards of $800+ million.  Best known for their role-play games (RPG), BioWare and Pandemic are currently in development on ten franchises, including six fully owned games:

  • Microsoft will publish BioWare’s Mass Effect in November; a massively multiplayer online game is currently in the early stages of development.
  • Pandemic Studios is preparing to release its “open-world games,” Mercenaries 2: World in Flames and Saboteur, as well as working on several unannounced projects.

The management teams for each studio will remain in tact, with Pandemic Studios continuing to be led by Andrew Goldman, Josh Resnick and Greg Borrud, and BioWare Corp. jointly led by Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka.  Additionally, each team will join the EA Games Label headed by Frank Gibeau, President/EA Games.
