Cynopsis

11/03/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 3, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.  Welcome to the November Sweep!

There’s a full out war going on in Iowa. Sinclair Broadcast Group wants cable operator Mediacom Communications Corp. to pay retransmission fees to Sinclair of $1 million more than what Mediacom is interested in paying, to continue carrying the Sinclair stations on its cable service.  Sinclair’s position is Mediacom benefits from the Sinclair stations because it uses those stations to “attract and retain fee-paying subscribers.” Mediacom on the other hand says they have made several very fair offers to Sinclair, all of which have been rejected by the group owner.  In Iowa, the stations are KDSM in Des Moines, a Fox affiliate; and KGAN in Cedar Rapids, a CBS station.  The battle has included a statement by Sinclair that it will pull all of its 22 stations off Mediacom in 12 states, if the situation in Iowa isn’t finalized by November 30.  Mediacom filed suit in District Court and lost.  They have subsequently filed an appeal in the US Circuit Court of Appeals, but that case won’t be heard until after the first of the year. Cue the mud-slinging:  Sinclair stations are running spots encouraging viewers sign up for DirecTV, and in fact on their website they are offering a $150 rebate to be applied against the DirecTV bill. Mediacom is encouraging viewers to call the TV station managers and tell them to accept Mediacom’s offer, and to call the FCC as well as their local politicians.  Stay tuned.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Showtime has ordered up a second season of Dexter about a guy who is a forensic expert by day, and a serial killer by night.  The show is now just five episodes into its inaugural season, and Showtime has ordered an additional 12 episodes to go into production this spring for debut on the network this summer.  The current season finale of Dexter is set for December 17.

Jamie Oliver returns to American cable TV in the Travel Channel’s newest series, Jamie Oliver’s Great Italian Escape which premieres November 8 at 8p. In this new cooking/travel series, Jamie will journey through Italy looking for culinary inspiration and professional rejuvenation all packed in his family’s RV. Sharing scenes with the Italian countryside and coast, in one episode he will cook in an open-air market in Sicily and another he takes a job at local fisherman’s restaurant on the island of Marettimo. The series is produced by Fresh One Productions for Freemantle North America for the Travel Channel.

VH1 will bring back thirteen of the Flavor of Love ladies from seasons one and two to compete in a new series Charm School (premiere date TBD). Hosted by Mo’Nique, the ladies will be trained in etiquette and then their social skills will be tested with various challenges, with the final winner receiving a cash prize and the title Charm School Queen. Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the advertising intelligence service of Nielsen, has released their report of recent political adverting for local campaigns across the US. From August 1-October 15, a total of 942,000 local TV political ads ran, a 31% increase compared to the 2002 mid-term election period. Both the Democrats and the Republicans have more than doubled their local TV activity this year: the GOP ran approximately 56,000 spots in 86 television markets and the Democratic National Committee ran approximately 54,000 spots in 101 television markets.

The movie studio, United Artists, will be resurrected in a new partnership agreement between Tom Cruise, Paula Wagner and MGM. Cruise Wagner Productions has produced films since 1993 and with their ownership rights, will control UA’s production slate and be the operating partner. Wagner will function as CEO, overseeing the daily operations of the studio along with Cruise, who will star in and produce films for UA as well as have the flexibility to appear in film projects for other studios. UA plans to produce four films per year which may increase in the future. Global marketing and distribution will be led by partner MGM. UA will be a major supplier of feature films to MGM, with production and development of UA movies financed in full by MGM and its partners. The last time Cruise did a film with the original UA was Rain Man in 1988 which won the Best Picture Academy Award.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

U.K.-based Zonemedia‘s Zone Mobile division has brokered a deal with Amp’d Mobile in the U.S. to exclusively carry the made-for-mobile horror series, When Evil Calls.  The audience will be able to access the series through streaming individual episodes on an a la carte or cable package basis.  When Evil Calls consists of 20×2 mobisodes which have been written and directed by Johannes Roberts and produced by Pure Grass Films. The series is also now available on general release through the Zone Horror WAP site and all major UK mobile operators. When Evil Calls centers on the mysterious appearance of a text message that grants the students at Willburn Hall their wildest desires but with a lethal lesson: be careful what you wish for.

Lionsgate Television will produce.

Friday Fun Fact:  In New York City, approximately 1,600 people are bitten by other humans annually. Yuck!

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1959-Columbia English professor and quiz-show star Charles Van Doren admits to a House subcommittee that his phenomenal success on the NBC-TV game show “Twenty-One” was staged.  After his repeated denials, the disclosure that Van Doren had been given the questions and answers beforehand was a significant scandal, marking the end of the popular game show format and Van Doren’s academic career.
