Cynopsis: DIGITAL
11.30.12
Good morning. It’s Friday, November 30, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
comScore has released Media Metrix Multi-Platform, a new audience measurement and media planning product that looks to offer unduplicated counts of website, video, and app content views across multiple devices. comScore says this new measurement system uses the company’s proprietary Unified Digital Measurement (UDM) methodology, which combines panel- and census-based data to provide estimates on digital audience size and consumption. While comScore’s “unique visitor” metrics still remain central to Media Metrix Multi-Platform, it also takes into account duration-based metrics (minutes) as well as content-specific engagement metrics like page views, video views, and app starts to provide a more holistic view of the fragmented media and audience landscape.
With the launch, comScore has also made some data available with regard to top multiplatform properties. The initial Media Metrix Multi-Platform data shows that 10 properties reached over 100 million unique visitors in September 2012, compared to just six when looking at them through a web-only lens. Of note, Google (#1) was the only multiplatform property in September to reach over 100 million unique visitors/viewers across both desktop and mobile channels. Yahoo and Facebook (#2 and #3, respectively) came close with each company topping 90 million unique monthly mobile visitors/viewers. Check out the full charts here.
Currently available in beta in the US, comScore says it will remain so over the next several months. The company also plans to introduce it in the UK early next year and other international markets soon after.
Starz Entertainment has launched a new transmedia project, dubbed Battle For Nuceria, tied to the upcoming final season of Spartacus: War of the Damned. Designed to be a season-long companion piece to the series, the project will allow fans to compete with others to unlock a slew of rewards, including more than three hours of exclusive video content, a grand prize trip to Rome, and the ability to watch the season premiere online before it airs on TV. Battle For Nuceria incorporates a bunch of gamification elements, including sixteen missions for fans to play against one another. Each mission awards the user points, which will be the currency that determines the winner of the grand prize as well as smaller rewards such as trips to the Riviera Maya, various Spartacus gear, iPad Minis, and more. If the community of players surpasses a certain number of points, they’ll be able to watch the season premiere as early as January 23. Spartacus: War of the Damned returns to Starz on January 25 at 9pm ET. Other elements of the project include an iOS app that lets players check into locations, unlock new missions and rewards, and keep track of their progress in the game. There is also a browser app that allows players to “hijack the net” by tagging and “capturing” global websites with rebel badges and symbols.
TBS has launched a new app for the Windows 8 operating system. Available for free in the Windows Store, the app serves to boost the original and syndicated programming that currently airs on the network. It offers video clips from shows such as Conan, Men at Work, Cougar Town, The Big Bang Theory, and Family Guy, as well as show listings, and the ability to create video playlists and share content. Other features include “Snap,” which lets users display two apps at the same time in order to multitask.

Brand safety and ad viewability solutions provider AdSafe Media has re-branded as Integral Ad Science as it launches a new metric called True Advertising Quality (TRAQ) Score. The company says TRAQ Score is an overall quality rating that determines the specific value of each individual ad placement based on the page environment and exposure attributes. It’s available for buyers and sellers alike, offering them a valuation of environments and exposures at the impression level to help improve campaign performance and optimize websites for better CPM yields. With the release of TRAQ Score, Integral Ad Science has also developed a new ROI Report, which is designed to provide advertisers with information on which publishers are better at driving conversions.
The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has released Site Tagging Best Practices for public comment. Developed by its Data Council, these best practices look to offer detailed recommendations for site tagging in order to help websites improve workflow procedures and ensure security in page performance and data control, as well as comply with privacy and guidelines. The IAB says the document also contains a glossary of marketplace terms to help companies better understand the vernacular commonly used in the current tagging ecosystem. IAB member companies that contributed to the document include AMC Networks, BlueKai, Google & YouTube, TagMan, and Yahoo, among others. The public comment period is open until January 4, 2013.
Komli Media, a digital media tech company covering Asia-Pacific, has partnered with Twitter to bring the social network’s Promoted Products ad suite to marketers in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Under the partnership, Komli will manage all of Twitter’s Southeast Asia sales and develop the regional market for the company and its Promoted Products through a series of education and training programs for agencies and large advertisers. A team has been assigned to oversee these responsibilities and offer Twitter’s suite of ad solutions like Promoted Tweets, Promoted Accounts, and Promoted Trends, which up until now have only been available in the US, the UK, Japan, and Latin America.
India-based ad tech provider Amagi Media Labs has launched its cloud-based Ad-Versioning platform for broadcasters worldwide. The platform, which is a part of the company’s Localization product suite, is designed to provide TV networks with the ability to version ad content across their common feeds in different countries. This would allow advertisers to air different versions of the same ad campaign to targeted countries at the same time, says Amagi. The platform also allows clients to preempt ad spots by substituting them with another (for example: substituting ads for alcoholic beverages in countries in which it’s not permissible). The company says its rolling out the Ad-Versioning platform worldwide after testing it out with television partners such as Viacom and Disney in India.
The latest Mobile Mix report from Millennial Media covers the mobile device and operating system landscape, based on the mobile ad network’s campaign and platform data, during the third quarter of 2012. Per the findings: 75% of impressions on Millennial’s platform came from smartphones. “Non-phone connected devices” (tablets, e-readers, etc.) jumped up six percentage points to account for 20% of impressions, when compared to last year.Other findings from the report include:
- Apple and Samsung were the top two manufacturers on Millennial’s platform, with all of the devices from each company accounting for 31% and 24% of all Q3 impressions, respectively.
- Android was the top operating system on Millennial’s platform during Q3 (52% of total impressions), which makes sense as Millennial reports that 15 of the top 20 mobile devices were running on Android. Apple’s iOS accounted for 34%. To be fair though, the iPhone was the top mobile phone, representing 16% of total impressions. In comparison, the runner-up, Samsung’s Galaxy S line, accounted for 4.9% of total impressions.
- Millennial says that following the release of iOS 6, the volume of impressions for the operating system was 1,200% greater than the impressions it saw last year after iOS 5 came out.
Online shopping was up during this Thanksgiving weekend through Cyber Monday when compared to last year. This much seems to be true when perusing the sales data that seems to be rolling out every day this week. But how much better did 2012 fare versus 2011. According to big data provider eXelate, 2012 did pretty well. Compared to 2011, online shopping on Thanksgiving Day 2012 was up 20%; on Black Friday 2012 was up 17%; on Saturday and Sunday it was up 15% and 19%, respectively; and on Cyber Monday, it was up 29%. Here’s an infographic produced by eXelate that outlines other holiday sales data.
Vimeo has released a new iPhone app, which lets users shoot, upload, watch, and share videos on the iPhone as well as other Vimeo-enabled devices. With Facebook and Twitter integration, users can share their videos to friends and followers on those social networks. Other features include the ability to enter video titles and descriptions as well as the option to search and watch videos while uploading takes place in the background.
YouTube has added automatic caption support for six European languages: German, Italian, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Dutch. This brings the total to 10 languages supported for videos on the site. While automatic captions are a starting point, creators can also improve their quality by download them for editing or edit them in-line on YouTube. YouTube says there are currently over 200 million videos with automatic and human-created captions on the site.
24/7 Media has made two promotions within its Corporate Strategy and Development team, which is responsible for partnerships, acquisitions, and product development. Paul Georges-Picot has been promoted to VP/Corporate Strategy and Development. He will play a key role in shaping the strategy and vision of the team and in developing business models for the company’s products and partnerships. Chris Moore has been named Director/Partnerships. He will lead interactions with the company’s 50+ partners. Both promotions are effective immediately.
Content recognition solutions provider TV Interactive Systems is re-launching under the name Cognitive Networks. The company partners with TV set manufacturers to enable content providers, advertisers, and others to offer interactive second-screen content and services tied to TV programming. As part of the re-launch, the company has named Michael Collette as its new Chief Executive Officer. He is tasked with leading the development and rollout of Cognitive Networks’ products, as well as raising capital to build out its staff and ramp up operations.
