Good morning, it’s Friday, November 30, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The AMPTP offered a new contract to the WGA containing clauses covering several areas of new media including streaming, content made for new media and programming delivered over digital broadcast channels. The AMPTP claims the entire value of the “New Economic Partnership” will deliver more than $130 million in additional compensation, though it’s unclear whether that’s per year or over the 3-year life of the contract. WGA is taking a close look at the proposal. Meanwhile, WGA also presented the justification for their economic proposal on Wednesday which could cost the industry $151 million over three years, representing what WGA says is a 3% increase. More on all this when the talks resume on Tuesday.
After placing some 13,000 Daily Show archives on its own dedicated site, Viacom has convinced itself to give the people more of what they want for free online. MTV Networks is planning to offer every episode of South Park online for free next year, vastly expanding what is now a random clip offering at SouthParkStudios.com. Since launching thedailyshow.com, ratings of the linear show have spiked, MTV Networks CEO Judy McGrath told the Reuters Media Summit.
NBC Universal began offering prime time shows through online video subscription service Netflix, offering previously aired episodes of Heroes for streaming the day after they premiere on air. The deal makes the DVD online rental giant the exclusive SVOD outlet for the show, after G4 and Mojo picked up its off-net syndication rights. Past seasons of 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights and The Office will also be available on the service.
TVOneonline.com will produce and stream a live webcast of the Heartland Presidential Forum in Des Moines, Iowa today at 2:30 pm ET, a grassroots event to be attended by the leading Democratic presidential candidates. The webcast can also be heard on all 52 Radio One station websites as well as on WOL-AM 1450 in Washington D.C. and WCHB-AM 1200 in Detroit.
MLB.com is offering live video coverage of Baseball’s annual Winter Meetings from Nashville, TN as part of an off season subscription package. The $14.95 bundle includes archived access to all 2007 regular season and playoff games as well as broadcasts of select Spring Training games.
Cablevision added HGTV HD and Food Network HD to its High-Def iO TV line up for no additional charge. The service now includes 44 HD channels.
Linear and online children’s programming service qubo is revamping its television line-up and introducing a new website storytelling tool on qubo.com. “Zimmer Twins” allows kids to create their own animated mash-ups, a selection of which will be showcased on the qubo Channel and on qubo weekend blocks on NBC, ION and Telemundo.
Facebook is considering revamping its controversial Beacon program that shares users’ purchasing information with friends, according to Business Week. The social network has been under fire from consumer groups, regulatory agencies and its own members since launching the “trusted referral” program three weeks ago.
AOL’s Truveo video search tool is now being offered on dozens of CBS-owned radio websites. The search widget pulls video content from ABC, Fox, MTV, NBC and other outlets.
Video game competition producer Games Media Properties launched a vertical online ad network and game/entertainment portal called Giant Realm. The portal will house a dozen gaming and video sites such as GameRiot and SpawnPoint, which attracted a cumulative 5 million users in Oct. 2007, according to Google Analytics numbers. The company also received an unspecified amount of funding from the William Morris Agency and Edison Ventures.
Mark Cuban launched a new Facebook classified application giving sellers the option to compensate users for helping them sell their items.
Magnify.net will provide its video content management solution to the social networking site VOIS.com, allowing users to upload, share and view videos. The agreement includes a 50/50 ad revenue share.

Apple will introduce a 3G version of the iPhone next year featuring faster internet surfing and download speeds, according to comments made by AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson in a public meeting. The reasons originally given for launching the iPhone on the older EDGE network were wider availability of the network and longer battery life.
The US Patent and Trademark Office upheld Tivo‘s “Time Warp” patent covering simultaneous storage and playback of programming. EchoStar had requested that the patent be reexamined.
ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox will generate $120 million from web based video ads alone in 2007, according to estimates from Starcom’s SVP & Video Innovation Director Tracey Scheppach quoted by FT.com.
Adobe and Yahoo! are rolling out a new advertising service for PDF publishers. Publishers can register and upload content before distributing it to have contextual ads dynamically matched and displayed to consumers via Adobe Reader. IDG InfoWorld, Wired and Meredith Corp. are among the publishers participating in the beta program.
