Good morning. It’s Friday, November 22, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
adidas booked itself a ticket to the World Cup through 2030. The sportswear company locked in a renewal with FIFA that will see it take on four more tournaments beginning in 2018. The relationship between the two companies would span 60 years with the new deal, one of sports’ oldest commercial relationships to 60 years.
“Over the last 40 years, adidas and FIFA have worked closely together to develop football worldwide. Therefore, it was a natural step for us to extend one of the most successful partnerships in the history of sports marketing,” said Herbert Hainer, CEO of the adidas Group. “We are happy and proud that our close relationship with FIFA will continue. This unique partnership and our extensive presence at all FIFA World Cups will help us to expand adidas’ position as the leading football brand worldwide.”
Mexico’s resurgence to finally claim a seat at the World Cup paid dividends for Univision, which saw the team’s matchup against New Zealand this week deliver an average of 3.1 million total viewers with 1.9 million among Adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. The match also ranked as the top sports program on broadcast TV in social media activity, regardless of language, according to Socialguide.
NBC Sports’ coverage of the United States Grand Prix on Sunday drew 1.010 million viewers, for a 47% spike over last year’s numbers (on SPEED), according to final national data from Nielsen. That score was despite blackouts due to news preemptions for severe weather in the Midwest, including the Chicago and Indianapolis markets. Overall, the race drew a 0.65 household rating according to final national data, up 67%. Among Adults 18-49 (387,000), the U.S. Grand Prix was the second-most watched race of the season on NBC behind the Monaco Grand Prix (441,000). Top markets included Austin with a 6.88, followed by Greensboro, San Diego, Columbus and Orlando.
The F1 season wraps up this weekend with the Brazilian Grand Prix, which will air live on NBC at 11a on Sunday. Coverage begins Friday on NBCSN at 11a with practice. CNBC will carry live coverage of qualifying on Saturday at 11a leading into Sunday’s race coverage on NBC.
FOX Sports 1 laid out broadcast plans for the U.S. Women’s National Team, which will open its 2014 schedule with a match against Canada on Jan. 31 at 9p. The U.S. team is ranked No. 1 in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings while Canada is No 7.
SiriusXM announced that Henrik Stenson, winner of both the 2013 FedExCup on the PGA TOUR and the Race to Dubai European golf title, and Ian Poulter, a two-time World Golf Championships winner and Ryder Cup star, will each host new series on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio starting in 2014. Both players will give listeners an insider’s perspective as they prepare for tournaments, and will discuss equipment, courses around the world, their competitors in the field and the headline news happening in the world of golf.
SiriusXM also revealed that starting Monday, ESPN Radio’s The Paul Finebaum Show will join the schedule as part of the ESPN Xtra channel daily lineup. The four-hour program airs weekdays from 2 – 6p and made its ESPN Radio debut on August 12, 2013.
Look for an inside presence from none other than Charles Barkley on TNT’s annual holiday spectacular Christmas in Washington. The special, hosted by Hugh Jackman, will see Barkley, as well as musical guests such as the Backstreet Boys, Sheryl Crow, Anna Kendrick, Janelle Monae and Pat Monahan will all make appearances. The special airs Dec. 20 at 8p.
NASCAR’s own Clint Bowyer is slated to join Tom McMillan on Meet the McMillans this weekend on Sportsman Channel. The episode airs Sunday, November 24 at 8:30p.
Time Warner Cable SportsNet will telecast 22 Los Angeles D-Fenders home games this season with former Laker and three-time NBA Champion A.C. Green and 20-year broadcasting veteran Steve Quis handling color commentary and play-by-play duties for the network. That doubles the number of games from the previous season, with every available home game running on tape delay and one special live broadcast on January 27, at 7p that will coincide with the birthday of the late Lakers owner, Dr. Jerry Buss.
The NFL is expanding its annual collaboration with USA Network for the anti-bullying, anti-discrimination initiative NFL Characters Unite. This year, the campaign, which launches on Dec. 2, will include a new weekly on-air vignette and webisode series on charactersunite.com and wrap up with a one-hour documentary presented by GMC on Jan. 31 during Super Bowl weekend.
The NCAA is looking to flip the tables on its legal woes, suing Electronic Arts and the Collegiate Licensing Company, according to The Wall Street Journal, and claiming that both companies breached contractual agreements with the NCAA. The lawsuits stem from the ongoing legal battles over the use of student athletes’ names, images, and likenesses. EA and the CLC settled last September, and now the NCAA stated that CLC “failed to adequately supervise” EA’s “contractual obligations” in the making of EA’s video games and in maintaining liability insurance to cover “pending third-party claims.”
Digital & Technology
After more than 43 million downloads, ESPN Digital Media gave an overhaul to its SportsCenter app. The next-gen app for iPhone and Android handsets offers live scores, breaking news, video highlights, feature stories, native social integration, in-line alert settings, GameCast access, and more. The SportsCenter app offers navigation designed around three content pillars: Scores, News and ESPN Now. Advertisers for the SportsCenter app at launch include MillerCoors, Kay Jewelers and Bud Light.
North American Membership Group CEO James Heckman announced the acquisition of Scout.com from Fox Networks Group. With the acquisition, both companies will merge to create a new digital media network that hones in male enthusiasts, and operate as Scout Media, Inc. Scout Media operates over 300 sports web properties.
The Main Event
Broncos/Patriots on NBC, Sunday at 8:30p.
