Good morning, it’s Friday, November 16, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Paramount Pictures‘ visually groundbreaking adaptation of the Old English epic poem Beowulf opens today, showing off new motion-capture technology that digitizes actors facial movements. (The rendering of Angelina Jolie will be worth the price of admission for some.) The film is also screening in stunning new 3D at IMAX theaters across the country. IMAX is getting serious about 3D these days. The company just signed a 4-picture deal with Dreamworks Animation to release Monsters vs. Aliens, How to Train Your Dragon and Shrek Goes Forth in 3D during the next couple of years (with Paramount distributing). In case you’re wondering, you still need to wear those funny glasses to view the 3D effects. But a new screen coating technology is in the works that will eliminate the need for them in the future, according to an IMAX spokesperson.
This could be a whole new revenue stream for the networks; NBC.com and Delivery Agent are conducting an online auction on Monday, Nov. 19 to sell off props and wardrobe items from several hit shows. Up for bid are three original paintings from Heroes, Steve Carell’s Timex and Hawaiian “Convention” shirt from The Office and a poker set used during a 30 Rock episode. Part of the proceeds will be donated to The United Way.
The Beatles catalog should finally be available in digital format next year, according to comments made by Sir Paul McCartney in Billboard. One factor holding things up has been a long-standing trademark dispute between Apple Inc. and the band’s Apple record label.
MTV Games and Harmonix began selling downloadable a la carte music tracks for the console game Rock Band to help gamers customize their game play with real rock classics, selling for $1.99 each and $5.49 for three. (That’s 160/440 Microsoft points for Xbox 360 users.) The interactive play-along game was one of the hottest titles at E3 this year.
John McCain is next up in the MySpace/MTV Presidential Dialogue series, MySpace announced yesterday. The next interactive debate will be held Monday, Dec. 3 at 7 pm ET at a yet-to-be-announced New Hampshire college campus.
Break.com is actively recruiting Writer’s Guild members, inviting striking writers to “ Strike Gold on Break” by entering a viral video contest. The WGA member who submits the top-watched video by Dec. 5 gets $5,000. Writing for new media ventures that don’t have signed agreements with the guild is officially permitted under current rules, confirmed the Wall Street Journal, but doing so remains a controversial action given that new media payment remains one of the key issues of the strike.
Internet-connected set top movie delivery service Vudu signed deals with Paramount, Universal and Lionsgate to deliver feature length titles in HD on an on-demand basis.
MTV, Elizabeth Arden‘s M by Mariah Carey and Ford Models are launching a campaign to find what they’re calling the first-ever virtual supermodel from the pages of MTV’s Virtual Hills. Participants can log onto vmodelsearch.mtv.com from Monday to create avatar contestants.
CBS is establishing a Wi-Fi zone in midtown Manhattan to enable laptops, cell phones and mobile devices access the internet for free. The “CBS Mobile Zone” is already partly operational but should reach more than 20 city blocks by the end of the month, from Times Square to Central Park South and from 6th Avenue to 8th Avenue. The network is powered by transmitters on CBS Outdoor billboards and MTA-owned panels installed above subway station entrances, courtesy of CBS Interactive and CBS Outdoor.
ION Media Networks will launch a campaign next week to educate consumers on the ins and outs of the digital transition scheduled for Feb. 17, 2009. On air spots and a dedicated website, ionline.tv/dtv will provide explanations about what’s involved and tips on getting HD signals the old fashioned way – over the air.
BiggerBoat.com launched its AdMatch targeting platform this week to automatically place ads next to and within online movies, music, TV shows, video games that best resonate with the brand’s intended image. BiggerBoat has built a proprietary index of entertainment info through partnerships with entertainment, radio, music and movie websites, cross-referencing user consumption preferences to help advertisers make meaningful connections.
Tivo Inc. expanded its ad sales force by hiring Jeff Stettin, Vice President of National Ad Sales and Dennis Dunphy, Director of Midwest Ad Sales. TiVo also announced it will be opening its first ad sales office in Chicago to better serve clients in the Midwest. Dennis will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Chicago office. He reports directly to Mr. Stettin.
Guerilla FX launched a new Digital Division exclusively for the creation of interactive content. A’arra Management founder James O’Brien will serve as Guerilla’s Marketing and New Business Partner for all production, effects, and postproduction work and will be responsible for the development and management of Guerilla’s work in the digital space.
The folks at Fox Searchlight Pictures have baked in all kinds of web 2.0 features into the promotional site for Juno, the Jason Reitman picture about the surprise pregnancy of a young girl played by Hard Candy’s Ellen Page. They’ve tried a YouTube short film competition, tie ins with tons of other sites and a social networking function called “Junoverse” where members vie for tickets to preview screenings and other goodies.
