Remember Moore’s law that projects the doubling of computer processing power roughly every 24 months? As scientists have wondered aloud how the paradigm can continue, Intel made an announcement that should help alleviate these doubts. The company introduced a new “3D Tri-Gate Transistor” technology that adds a vertical surface to chips and will bring even more computing power to smartphones and tablets while sharply reducing power consumption. (In fact, if designers keep performance consumption constant, the new technology promises to consume half the power as Intel’s existing production method.) Intel expects to have the chips into production later this year for use in devices in 2012.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Following in the footsteps of Netflix and its high profile Kevin Spacey project, Sony’s Crackle is investing in its own line of scripted series, per Variety. The digital network has already signed deals with three established writers, with the hopes of introducing its first original half-hour show this fall:

  • “Monster Heist” is a series about a crew of thieves who happen to be monsters, penned from the team that created CBS’ Ghost Whisperer (Kim Moses and Ian Sander) 
  • Sons of Anarchy producer Chris Collins is developing a paranormal-themed anthology series
  • “Strand Street” is about a rookie cop who infiltrates a gang from his hometown, from Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia

 
Walmart’s Vudu cloud-based streaming service has added a bunch of TV show episodes to its line-up for the standard rate of $1.99/episode, including next-day offerings of the CW’s Gossip Girl. You’ll also find season 1 of Glee, Weeds, Modern Family, Walking Dead and Nurse Jackie, among others.
 
Comedy Central
is cracking wise with a new Tech-themed comedy show dubbed The Download, hosted by comedian Jordan Rubin. Rubin and his sidekick Molly McAleer will interview guests from the world of comedy, entertainment and/or technology to explore how they use social media and gadgets. Samsung is sponsoring to promote its Smart TV platform and apps, with new apps to be featured in each of the 4 weekly episodes.
 
NBCU’s iVillage site is saluting Mother’s Day with a collection of personalized stories from famous working moms.

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Canadian web-to-TV animated hit series Chilly Beach has found its way to Hulu, both on the free service and the subscription-based, ad free Hulu Plus. The March Entertainment production, starring Steve Ashton and Dwayne Hill, mixes in slapstick with political satire. Hulu is also offering up the two original movie spin-offs made from the show.

TidalTV
and Eyeview have announced a partnership to deliver dynamically personalized video ads. The partnership will bring together TidalTV’s ad decisioning capabilities with Eyeview’s Video Personalization Technology to bring personalized and relevant brand advertising experiences to targeted online video audiences.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Facebook and Google are both looking to strike joint ventures with internet calling giant Skype in deals that could be valued at between $3 billion to $4 billion, according to a Reuters report. Skype recently delayed a planned IPO until later this year and is reportedly looking for more capital to expand its video calling services. A Facebook tie-up would give it a leg up in international markets and allow the social networking giant expand upon the Skype feature it already offers to its 500 million users – allowing Skype users to call their Facebook friends from within Skype’s phone client, and allowing them see their Facebook news feeds in their Skype news feeds.
 
Bertelsmann AG’s Random House Inc. has acquired Seattle-based digital media firm Smashing Ideas Inc. for an undisclosed sum. Smashing Ideas specialized in adapting books and media properties into iPad apps and e-books, counting Disney, Mattel, Nickelodeon, Hasbro, GE, and Microsoft among its clients.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Six verticals had over 100% growth in global revenue year-over-year, according to the latest SMART report from the mobile ad network Millennial Media, led by the retail/restaurant vertical which grew an astounding 1342%. Campaign deals of more than 250k grew over 200% year-over-year, while 18% of all campaigns allowed consumers to take some sort of social media action (such as “liking” a FB page, tweeting a brand message, etc.). Also, Local market targeting grew 24% quarter-over-quarter in Q1 and represented 42% of all campaigns targeting a specific audience. These were campaigns that allowed advertisers to customize their message to local markets – ranging from a country to a DMA – particularly beneficial for advertisers who were trying to provide localized deals.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Arc Productions, recently acquired by a Canadian ownership group from Starz Media US, is reshaping the studio management team appointing Jeff Young as President and COO. Peter Kozik is also joining Arc as VP/Finance. Former EVP and Head of Studio, David Steinberg is leaving the company to pursue the creative development of his own projects.
 
Ian Whitfield
has been named Managing Director of Encompass Digital Media Limited. He will be based in London, where he will oversee all facility operations including channel origination; satellite and fiber transmission; encoding/transcoding; engineering; and digital media asset management.
 
AT&T Advanced Advertising Solutions has tapped Michael Rosen as VP of Internet and Mobile Sales for AT&T Advanced Ad Solutions. He joins the group after serving as President of Oggifinogi, a rich media advertising company and also serving as a key player in the launch of Babelgum.

After burning through the precious few Seinfeld episodes on the new Crackle iPhone app, I was left with a burning need for more digital Jerry. At 9 am ET this morning, JerrySeinfeld.com goes live as home for “nearly every recorded comedy performance given by its creator and namesake,” or more than 1,000 clips dating back to 1977, according to the NYTimes. The place-keeper now up on the site contains a running lists of topics, from Old Guys Using Flomax to Kramer’s Hair. The comedian spent 7 months cobbling together the collection from his personal archives and the collections of his colleagues.
