Cynopsis: Sports
05.03.13

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 3, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The Southeastern Conference and ESPN finally made it official, announcing a 20-year agreement to create and operate a multiplatform network that will launch in August 2014. The branded channel and its digital platform will carry SEC content 24/7 that includes more than 1,000 events in its first year, including approximately 45 SEC football games, as well as over 100 men’s basketball games, 60 women’s basketball games, 75 baseball games, and more. As part of the agreement, ESPN will oversee the SEC’s official Corporate Sponsor Program and has extended their overall existing media rights agreement through 2034. The first national distributor will be AT&T U-verse. ESPN’s Justin Connolly, formerly senior vice president, ESPN affiliate sales and marketing, will oversee the network’s day-to-day operations.

“The SEC Network will have significant scheduling options and a depth of content across all sports, including a thousand live sporting events each year with 450 televised on the network and an additional 550 games distributed digitally,” said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive at the announcement.

The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball has a new home, signing off on an agreement with CBS Sports Network and CBS Interactive to showcase the 2013 AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. CBS Sports Network will carry live men’s and women’s Championship round action from all five Tour stops, while CBS Interactive will provide a live stream of the preliminary rounds from each event on AVP.com. This year’s tour begins on August 16 at Salt Lake City and wraps up on October 20 in Huntington Beach. The deal marks AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour’s return to television for the first time since the summer of 2010.

ESPN’s SportsNation co-host Charissa Thompson appears to be on her way to FOX Sports, according to The Big Lead. Thompson, of course, once served as co-host of FOX’s “The Best Damn Sports Show Period.” A FOX Sports spokesman had no comment.
