Google is pushing back against European regulators in the Street View mapping snafu, intentionally missing the Thursday deadline to turn over data collected by its Wi-Fi cameras, according to the NYTimes. The company’s excuse is that German privacy laws prevent it from turning over the information. Meanwhile, The FTC has asked Google not to destroy any documents related to the incident, according to the LA Times. A bipartisan group of lawmakers from the Energy & Commerce Committee wrote a letter to Google CEO Eric Schmidt this week asking him to go into more detail about what was collected, whether or not communities were notified of the collection activities and why Google collected the data in the first place – suggesting that the Committee doubts the public explanation that this was all an accident.

E1 Entertainment has struck North American digital distribution deals with ITV Global Entertainment for over 185 hours of classic British TV series and miniseries, and with ContentFilm for distribution via iTunes of more than 100 hours of TV series, miniseries and films.
Branded content publisher RedLever has acquired the web rights to the 10 episode football-themed reality series “Steve Clarkson Dreammaker,” which scouts high school hopefuls from across the country who are vying to make Clarkson’s Super 7 rankings. Hall of Famer Warren Moon and past Super 7 finalist Matt Leinart will appear in the show.
Google announced that it has closed on its $750 million acquisition of AdMob, less than a week after federal regulators approved the deal.
Targeting and customer engagement specialist Experian Marketing Services struck a partnership with addressable advertising firm INVIDI Technologies to jointly provide consumer segmentation across traditional and digital media for advertisers, television networks and multichannel television distributors.
Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), Chairman of the Senate’s Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights subcommittee, drew up a list of demands the DOJ and FCC should request when considering the merger between Comcast and NBC Universal, among them being that Comcast should divest its interest in Hulu within a year. He sees Over-the-Top services that could deliver Hulu to a television as a true competitor to traditional cable and satellite services and worries of an obvious conflict of interest. Kohl would also like to see NBC prohibited from moving any of its broadcast shows to a cable network that Comcast has a stake in, at least for the next 10 years.
Verizon‘s Global Wholesale VoIP unit announced that its Voice-over-IP minutes used grew by more than 200% in 2009 over the previous year, after more than 10 years in operation. And we can expect that number to soar even higher this year, as the company strengthens its ties with Skype to enable VoIP calls over Verizon Wireless Android or BlackBerry smartphones. (Skype announced new all-you-can-eat subscription plans this week expected to increase usage exponentially.) Verizon Global Wholesale has a base of more than 700 wholesale VoIP customers.
Web based TV technology platform Clearleap announced the successful integration of web based content and advertising management technologies for Mediacom Communications, the nation’s seventh largest MSO. Clearleap’s’ integrated offering includes its “Content Marketplace” hub, a collection of licensed content containing national programming, best of web and special interest content packaged in pre-selected, self populating channels.
Traditional media outlets continue to drive sales on digital ones, helping to turn those proverbial pennies into dimes and quarters. Following its season premier on April 13, FOX’s music-themed hit show Glee saw track downloads from its four compilation albums jump from 51k to 359K in the first week. The show’s latest “Showstoppers” album topped the Billboard charts this week as digital sales of all “Glee”-related songs surpassed 500K. Songs from the show posted 4.1 million track sales in 2009 and 3.2 million so far this year, according to a Nielsen analysis, with 2.5 million of the tracks selling in the past six weeks alone.

Much effort has been made to reach casual gamers in recent years but marketers ignore the hardcore gaming segment at their peril judging how much time they spend playing video games, according to a new report from NPD Group. The study’s Extreme Gamers segment, which represents 4% of the total U.S. gaming population, spends some 48.5 hours/ week playing games, compared to the 13 hours/week the average gamer 2+ spends playing games. The number of hours gamers spend per week playing both console and PC games showed a marked increase over last year’s study, with console games increasing 9% and PC games increasing 6%. (Conversely the number of hours gamers spent playing portable games saw a 16% decline.) The average age of gamers increased slightly over last year from 31 last year to 32 this year. Avid PC Gamers and Offline PC Gamers, comprising 11% and 8% of the gaming population, respectively, are the oldest segments with an average age for both of 42 years.
Barnes & Noble has launched a full-featured BN eReader app for the iPad based on the ePub digital publishing standard, now available for free on the App Store. Like the versions for the iPhone/iPod Touch or BlackBerry, the app gives readers access to Barnes & Noble eBookstore and allows you to sync e-books, magazines or newspapers you begin reading on the device to a PC with the appropriate software installed. Another cool feature is the ability to share eBooks with friends with the free “LendMe” tool, integrating directly with your iPad address book. B&N says more than 1 million eBooks, magazines and newspapers are available for the app, a considerably wider selection than is currently available from Apple’s iBook store.
Guinness World Records also launched a free app for the iPad this week, its first edition for an e-reader.
Nickelodeon UK unveiled Dora’s Great Big World, a new app for preschoolers on nickjr.co.uk and part of the digital offering for Dora the Explorer’s 10th Anniversary. The immersive online world, which allows kids to choose a location they wish to visit, add stickers to locales they’ve been to and uncover hidden surprises, will sit on the relaunched Dora microsite.
Former AOL executive Chris Eberle has been tapped as VP/Ad Operations for the social networking site Meebo. He will be responsible for driving the innovation and scale of Meebo’s ad business and further developing Meebo’s optimization engine.
Kevin Ota has joined ESPN as Director, Digital Communications, handling PR for ESPN’s digital products including ESPN.com, mobile, ESPN3.com, digital audio, fantasy, and gaming. He is based at ESPN’s headquarters in Bristol, Conn. and reports to Katina Arnold, VP/Communications.
News Corp.’s Fox Mobile division launched a beta version of a new app for the BlackBerry called Bitbop that allows you to watch full-length episodes from your handset from many of the same partners who supply Hulu. One of the best things about it is that videos can be either streamed or downloaded to a queue, so that you can stockpile episodes before you hop on a plane or a subway. (Supported models include BlackBerry Bold 9000, BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Curve 8900, BlackBerry Tour 9630.) The app is free to download, but users will have to pay a $10/month subscription fee to access the whole catalog of shows, according to MocoNews, which includes NBC’s 30 Rock, Fox’s Glee, CBS’ CSI and FX’s Justified.
