Good Morning, it’s Friday, May 25, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

As part of its newly revamped, spread-it-far-and-wide video syndication strategy, CBS Interactive signed deals with several new socially-oriented websites to enable users to embed CBS clips on profile pages, blogs, wikis, widgets and community pages. The newest members of the CBS Audience Network include Automattic, maker of blogging software WordPress, cross-platform widget creator Clearspring, music-oriented social network DAVE Networks, widget site creator Goowy Media, IM service meebo, online video guide MeeVee, syndication platform Musestorm, social networking template Ning, widget provider RockYou!, slide show site Slide, video distributors/ad network VideoEgg, viral syndicator Voxant and social networking video platform vSocial.


MTV Networks is planning to develop several more virtual worlds and is working toward integrating online avatars into its linear TV programming, according to comments made by Digital Media President Mike Salmi at the Goldman Sachs annual internet conference in Las Vegas. During first quarter, MTVN signed digital deals with 53 new advertisers, including Doritos, Tropicana and Saab. Salmi said the company is looking to increase online ad spending through video ads, placement in virtual worlds and integrations in new videogames.
As a follow up to Star Trek 2.0, G4 launched Cops 2.0, an interactive update on the classic Fox reality series including on-screen games, live web-based chat and bonus facts and figures about past shows. The show will be stripped Monday through Friday at 6 PM ET/PT beginning May 29.
CBS Interactive launched Clark and Michael, a mocumentary made-for-the-web series about two friends trying to develop a successful TV show. The series, which will premiere new episodes every Wednesday, features Clark Duke and Michael Cera (from Arrested Development fame), as well as several well-known special guests.
CMT Loaded introduced a new user-generated broadband channel CMT Homegrown. Users who submit videos compete for a chance to host a special episode of CMT’s Top 20 Countdown.‘s The Real Kids of Orange County will star in a one-hour special on the linear version of Bravo on Tuesday, May 29 at 10 pm ET/PT. Nine webisodes from the online takeoff on The Real Housewives of Orange Country will be shown. 
Multiplatform kids programming service Kabillion will launch a new animated series I Got A Rocket June 1 on Kabillion’s VOD service (available throughout Comcast‘s VOD footprint). Broadband users can get a sneak peek of the series on from this week or on from May 29. The show is based on the popular award-winning Australian children’s book from Matt Zurbo and Dean Gorissen.

AOL RED will broadcast the Spring Awakening & Degrassi Live Verbal Mash-Up. The special teen town hall discussion features the casts of Broadway music Spring Awakening and The N hit series Degrassi: The Next Generation, also currently in syndication.


24/7 online reality TV show (think ED TV with chat and social networking thrown in) launched its own network to allow users create and publish their own online shows. Each participant gets their own page on and will be able to take advantage of new features such as a new video player, a calendar tool and clip voting system to promote the most popular bits. 
Tribler, a research project of the Dutch Delft University of Technology and the VU University Amsterdam, released a new version of its client software that incorporates YouTube videos into user searches. Tribler uses peer-to-peer technology to make videos load faster and help users discover common interests among other downloaders.
Vuze will become the exclusive host of the online web series competition of the Independent Television Festival, Inc. (ITVF). The site will be the exclusive on-line submission point for all high-resolution (DVD/HD quality) video entries into the festival and an alternate submission point for ITVF’s television pilot category, starting June 4th.


IAC/Interactive Corp.’s HSN announced a deal with EchoStar to allow Dish subscribers to purchase goods from the shopping channel using only the remote control. The “Shop By Remote” feature, which must be registered to a credit card before being activated, is also being tested by Cablevision in New York and Time Warner Cable in Hawaii. Other HSN multiplatform initiatives include podcasts of recorded and original programming, video-on-demand and streaming live video via
Microsoft ad chief Yusuf Mehdi put rumors of a possible acquisition of Yahoo! by the software giant to rest at Goldman Sach’s internet conference this week, saying the company already has all the pieces in place it needs to be successful.


Google is testing a new video offering to its AdSense program while trying to weed out websites that pose as content sites but are really just billboards for online ads. AdSense began testing in-stream video ads this week that require the publisher to pay only when a consumer makes a purchase or requests more information. The ads play on publishers’ own flash video players.


VOD measurement firm Rentrak is teaming with Hiwire to conduct a joint measurement trial of mobile TV viewing by consumers in Las Vegas, NV. Mobile TV provider Hiwire is subsidiary of Aloha Partners, the largest current owner of 700 Mhz spectrum in the U.S. 
The Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF) is creating a set of guidelines and practices for US entertainment and wireless companies to follow for Participation TV in the U.S. P-TV services provide viewers the ability to participate in SMS voting and sweepstakes entries using their mobile phones, such as voting for this year’s American Idol. The MEF seeks to achieve transparency in P-TV operations by developing structured and auditable processes, determining responsibility and accountability.


Web-based video editor Eyespot will power the online Star Wars video mashup to celebrate the movie’s 30th anniversary this weekend. About 250 sixty-second clips will be made available for mashing and users can embed their clips on sites such as MySpace, Hi5, and Piczo. Lucasfilms must pre-approve all clips before they are published and Eyespot has built in controls to make sure nothing too unsavory is created.
