The IPO of LinkedIn, the first big social network to go public, didn’t disappoint on Wall Street. Shares more than doubled out of the gate to open at $83/share on the New York Stock Exchange (up from its $45 offering price) and reached as high as $112 – a mark that values the company at more than $10 billion. When asked by CNBC if he would have been tempted to float more if he had known it would fetch such high prices, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner said that its important not to read to much into “these initial trades.”
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The Ebook has officially come of age, as Kindle book sales on Amazon have reached the tipping point of surpassing print book sales. The company says it for every 100 print books sold on Amazon.com since April, 105 were Kindle books were sold, including books for which there was no Kindle edition. The U.S. Kindle Store now has more than 950k books, including New Releases and 109 of the 111 New York Times Best Sellers. And growth of the format is really picking up, as Amazon sold more than 3 times as many Kindle books so far in 2011 as it did during the same period in 2010. Amazon still won’t disclose how many Kindles it has sold, but it did say that in the five weeks since its introduction, the ad-subsidized $114 Kindle with Special Offers is already the bestselling member of the Kindle family in the U.S.
 
The final 23rd season of The Simpsons on Fox will get an interactive boost with a contest on simpsons.com that will enable fans to vote “Pro Nedna” or “No Nedna” throughout the summer. (Ned Flanders and Edna Krabappel have become a love interest and each camp will have a selection of wallpaper, videos, Twitter badges and Facebook icons to post.) After the fan voting ends in August, results will be revealed during the Season 23 premiere.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
High-flying social gaming company PopCap Games (Bejeweled, Plants vs Zombies) may be one of the next big tech companies to go public, according to comments made by CEO David Roberts. November is the company’s current IPO target date.
 
The Adam Corolla Show has officially surpassed Ricky Gervais as the most downloaded podcast in the world, according to the Guinness World Records. Adam hosted a special livestream of the show via Ustream last night to celebrate the milestone. The show, produced by ACE Broadcasting, debuted in 2006 and surpassed 50 million downloads in its first year alone.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Google announced that it will be soon rolling out a fix to address a security flaw that may have effected over 99% of Android phones. “We recently started rolling out a fix which addresses a potential security flaw that could, under certain circumstances, allow a third party access to data available in calendar and contacts,” a Google spokesman said in a statement. “This fix requires no action from users and will roll out globally over the next few days.” The flaw was first discovered by Germany’s University of Ulm, which issued this report on the security hole.
 
Evolve Media Corp. is announcing this morning it has acquired WholesomeBabyFood.com to add to the Momtastic family of sites. WholesomeBabyFood.com allows Momtastic to offer users and marketers more in depth content surrounding food, health, and parenting.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Online video consumption was on the rise in April as Americans streamed 14.7 billion videos, up 1.9% from the previous month and the most streams ever in a single month, according to Nielsen. The top 10 video sites in April are largely the same as last month, with AOL Media Network and The CollegeHumor Network seeing the largest month-over-month increase in unique viewers – up 13% and 11%, respectively. Facebook still ranked third overall behind YouTube and VEVO in unique video viewers, but saw its uniques drop by 4.3% and its total streams fall by 6.1%. MSN/WindowsLive/Bing, CNN and FIM all dropped by double digital percentage points in terms of unique viewers.

A new consumer study also released by Nielsen yesterday identified marked differences in traditional and digital media consumption across ethnic groups in the U.S:

  • Asians/Pacific Islanders are the most active PC and Internet users, spending nearly 80 hours on PCs in February 2011 versus the national average of about 55 hours. They also consume more internet content than any other group, visiting 3,600 web pages in February – about 1,000 more than their counterparts. Although they watch the least amount of TV (3 hours and 14 minutes per day), they stream the most online video, averaging 10 hours and 39 minutes in Feb. – more than double the overall mean of 4 hours and 20 minutes
  • African Americans are the heaviest TV consumers, watching 6 hours and 54 minutes a day versus the 5 hour and 11 minute average for all U.S. households. More than 30% of African American households have four or more televisions, and over-index in subscription to premium cable services. On their mobile phones, they use more voice minutes than other groups (1,261 minutes per month)
  • Hispanics are very active on their smartphones, texting the most out of all races/ethnicities (943 texts per month) and employing a wide range of mobile activities, including mobile banking. Smartphone penetration among Hispanics has reached 45%, matching only Asian-American usage levels in popularity

 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
ABC News unveiled a new iPhone and Android app for “Good Morning America” allowing viewers to be a part of the program’s daily conversation. The app can be used to vote live on buzz-worthy stories discussed during the program. As the votes are tallied, users are able to see real-time results during the broadcast and evaluate how their choices compare with others’ responses.
 
Paramount Digital Entertainment announced it is launching ten additional movie apps of Paramount Pictures films exclusively for Windows Phone 7. The apps, downloadable from the Windows Phone Marketplace, allows users to watch, clip, share and interact with a selection of movies including “True Grit,” “Zoolander” and “Mean Girls.”
 
Google updated its search app for iOS devices, upping search speed by 20% and adding a new “just talk” feature that can toggled on and off right below the Voice Search option. (Just talk enables you speak your search term into the phone, without having to hit the mike icon.)

Mark Lazarus, who was serving as President of the NBC Sports Cable Group (Golf Channel, VERSUS and the 11 Comcast Sportnets) was immediately appointed as the new Chairman of the Group.
