Cynopsis: Kids!

5/18/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 18, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Disney steps into the Chinese movie market this August 2007 with the release of The Magic Gourd, a mixed live-action/animated, Chinese-language feature, per the Associated Press.  In addition to being Disney’s first co-production with state-run China Film Group, The Magic Gourd will introduce, Bao Wooloo (aka the magic gourd), a character specifically designed for the Chinese movie market.  The movie also features special effects created by China’s Centro Digital Pictures.  The movie is based on The Secret of the Magic Gourd, a kid’s book by Chinese author Zhang Tianyi that was originally published in 1958, about a 10-year-old boy whose world goes topsy-turvey when Bao Wooloo grants him one wish.

MORE KIDS STUFF

He’s baaaack.  Scholastic will publish a new kid’s 12-book series from author R.L. Stine, who is best known for his Goosebumps books (there were 87 of them).  The new series, Goosebumps HorrorLand, will take readers on serialized adventure to a theme park called Horrorland.  The series will launch in April 2008 with the release of the two books; the first is titled Revenge of the Living Dummy.  In-between publishing dates the story will continue on a corresponding website that will provide additional clues and information about Horrorland as well as offering exclusive related stories, downloads, games and the like.  Following the launch of the Horrorland series, Scholastic plans to begin reissuing the some of the original Goosebumps books, specifically the bestselling titles that also tie into the new series.

This week marks the launch of The Plain Janes, the first title from DC Comics’ new Minx imprint.  Written by Cecil Castellucci and illustrated by Jim Rugg, The Plain Janes revolves around a group of high school girls who become friends at the reject table in the cafeteria. Oh yeah – they are all named Jane, and so they form a secret art gang called P.L.A.I.N.  People Loving Art In Neighborhoods.  Announced in November 2006, Minx mission is to publish original graphic novels specifically targeted to girls.  Additionally, Minx has launched a marketing effort driven and overseen by Alloy Media + Marketing.

HIT Entertainment has established up a new Global Consumer Products Group and selected its own Peter Byrne to head the new unit, serving as EVP/Worldwide Consumer Products.

Target Entertainment‘s new preschool animation series, Fluffy Gardens (40×7′), has been picked up by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), France 5, SVT Sweden, NRK Norway, Cartoonito in the UK, and Discovery Kids Latin America, among others.  The series is executive produced by Monster Animation & Design in association with Irish national broadcaster RTE.  Target Entertainment co-financed the production and represents the licensing, TV, and home video rights.

XM satellite radio wraps-up the XMKids Traveling Roadshow with the broadcast of a live concert from Washington DC, 12-3p.  Hosted by XMKids’ on-air team Kenny Curtis, Jinx, Absolutely Mindy and Robbie Schaefer will include performances of a range of kid’s performers.  XM teamed with Wal-Mart for the XMKids Traveling Roadshow, a nationwide bus tour that was designed to raise awareness and funds for the Children’s Miracle Network.

V-me and Sesame Workshop have joined to air a special program over Memorial weekend to address the challenges and sacrifices military families face with deployment and separation.  The 30-minute special, Cuando el Servicio Llama: Vivencias de Familias Militares, is adapted from Sesame Workshop’s When Parents are Deployed and will hosted by Gaby Rivero.  V-me will also offer links to support materials for active duty families on http://www.v-me.tv/ from Sesame Workshop’s Talk, Listen, Connect bilingual kit.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Discovery Communications has unveiled its new consumer products retail strategy, which includes the closing of its 103 mall-based brick and mortar Discovery Channel Stores by the end of 3Q 2007.  Meanwhile the company plans to cultivate partnerships with larger retailers to increase the reach of its consumer products, offering Animal Planet’s relationship with Toys R Us as a good example.  Additionally, and not surprisingly, Discovery will also look to build on its web-based e-commerce (DiscoveryStore.com and partners like Amazon.com) as well as focusing on other opportunities including via TV (t-commerce) and its catalog business.  Discovery will maintain its licensing partnership with Hudson Group, who operates the Discovery Channel airport stores.

Universal Music Group Distribution’s Vivendi Visual Entertainment (V V E) moves into the kid’s DVD distribution market with the preschool series Mustard Pancakes.  Under a multi-year deal V V E will release a series of themed 60-minute DVDs (e.g. holiday, best songs, etc) crafted together from the Mustard Pancake TV series.  The first DVD title is slated for release in September 2007.

Scholastic Media walks Clifford The Big Red Dog into in the pet category with new and renewed licensing deals including: Pet Goods Manufacturing’s line of Clifford The Big Red Dog-branded products includes beds, bowls, plush, toys and leashes; Bil Jac Foods maintains distribution of Clifford Tummy Teasers.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has tapped Michael D. Gallagher as its new President, taking the reins from Doug Lowenstein, who announced in December 2006 that he would step down after 12-years. Gallagher, a former Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications & Information, serving as the chief telecommunications and policy advisor to the Bush Administration, joins the ESA from the law firm of Perkins Coie.  Previously, Gallagher was Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy & Counselor to Secretary Donald L. Evans, secretary of Commerce.  Gallagher is a member of both the Advisory Committee to the Secretary General of the United Nations for the Internet Governance Forum and the US State Department Advisory Committee on Information and Communication Policy.

Peter Byrne has been appointed to head HIT Entertainment’s newly created Worldwide Consumer Products Group as EVP/Worldwide Consumer Products.  Based in London, Byrne assumes responsibility for worldwide licensing, promotions, brand and retail marketing, and creative services, as well as HIT’s live events strategy and its theme park initiatives. Byrne will report to CEO, Bruce Steinberg.  For the last two years Byrne has served as HIT’s EVP/International.

In other HIT news, Jamie Cygielman, who will report to Byrne, expands her current responsibilities as SVP and GM/North America to include the company’s Canadian operations and the creative resources group in North America.

Jeffrey Quinn joins BabyFirstTV as SVP/Marketing.  Responsible for the channel’s marketing, advertising and promotional operations, Quinn reports to EVP Sharon Rechter.  He most recently served as VP/Sales & Licensing, The Brainy Baby Company.
