Good Morning. It’s Friday, May 12, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
NBC‘s Upfront presentation is scheduled for Monday and late yesterday it picked up five new series for the Fall 2006-07 season:
- Friday Night Lights from Imagine Television is based on the film, only this one stars Kyle Chandler as to the football coach
- 20 Good Years with John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor, from Warner Bros. TV And Werner-Gold Miller.
- The Singles Table from 20th TV
- Raines starring Jeff Goldblum from NBC Universal TV
- Heroes from NBC Universal TV
Still waiting to hear if it will be picked up is the Tina Fey comedy project. Among the other projects receiving earlier pick up orders are The Black Donnellys, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Kidnapped.
Tonight’s Finale:
NBC: Las Vegas at 9p
Going into the Upfronts next week, here’s a quick recap of new series the networks have already announced they have picked up:
ABC: Help Me Help You, Day Break, In Case of Emergency and Six Degrees. ABC’s Upfront is on Tuesday.
CBS: CBS doesn’t give anything away until Leslie Moonves stands stage right at Carnegie Hall. He’ll do that on Wednesday.
Fox: ‘Til Deal, Vanished, Primary and American Crime. Rumors are swirling about Happy Hour, but nothing official. Fox presents on Thursday afternoon.
NBC: See above
The CW: Being linked with CBS, this new net isn’t giving much away either, but they are big on Runaway. The CW presents on Thursday morning.
Sony Pictures Television will offer its new fall syndicated daytime talker, The Greg Behrendt Show, both on air, and same-day online streaming episodes for local stations carrying the show. The online streaming episodes will be available to the stations for a 24-hour period on the day of the original broadcast. The online ep will also include other original content, as well as all advertising as seen in the broadcast.
HBO has not picked up the options of the cast in its western series Deadwood beyond the upcoming third season, set to launch on June 11. That doesn’t necessarily mean the show is dead, but the actors are free to roam the range for other projects. Of course, corralling them back in for an additional season or two is always difficult once the gate is opened.
If you live in Philadelphia, Chicago, Baltimore or Detroit, there’s a new-fangled service come to your area on Monday, courtesy of Comcast, CBS and GM. It’s a free video-on-demand service, with content from CBS primetime, available to you one day after the broadcast air. On Monday you’ll be able to see the finale of Survivor as a free VOD, because it’s fully sponsored by GM. That means there will be GM commercials at the start, middle and end. This will be the first time a VOD service will offer current or new shows for free. Comcast currently provides Amazing Race and CSI episodes, but those go for a .99 cent charge. This new service is only being provided in market where CBS owns the local affiliate.
Criss Angel, the three-time Magician of the Year, will return for season two of Criss Angel Mindfreak on A&E Network May 31 at 10p. The first episode, Building Float, has Criss levitating between buildings in front of a random crowd in the middle of the day. Nineteen other mind-boggling world premiere episodes will follow the May 31 premiere all with a rating of TVPG-L.
Current TV is running the first viewer-created ad message (V-CAM), a permanent feature on the network. “Transformation” is a 24-second spot created for Sony by 19-year-old Tyson Ibele from Minneapolis. The spot features an animated montage of Sony products morphing into one another with synthesized music. Sony Electronics will allow Current viewers to create at least half of its ads via V-CAM and they will add another V-CAM in the next few weeks. All spots are produced for Current on the network’s V-CAM page at www.current.tv/vcam.
HBO has ordered up a new comedy pilot: 12 Miles of Bad Road, from Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and Harry Thomason, two names we haven’t heard a lot from since the Clinton administration. You’ll recall these were the folks behind Designing Women and Evening Shade.
Steve Bellamy, President/Founder of The Tennis Channel, has announced his departure from the channel to pursue other interests. A long-time enthusiast of the sport, Steve has been active in numerous tennis industry capacities before and since founding The Tennis Channel.
RDF USA, a division of RDF Media, a U.K. production company, has hired Tony Yates as COO. He will be responsible for the operational and production management of all U.S. programming on the East and West coasts. Furthermore, Wendy Roth has been promoted to EVP, where she will continue to executive produce the ABC show Wife Swap as well as the upcoming series Ice T’s Rap School in production for VH1. She will manage RDF’s New York office, where both she and Tony will be based.
Bill Graff has joined Discovery International Networks as Director/HD Programming, effective this Monday.
Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution has named Greg Wylie as Director/Creative Services, where he will report to Susan Kantor, SVP/Marketing, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution and Telepictures Productions. Some of his many duties will include managing the creation and production of marketing materials for first-run and off-network syndicated TV series distributed by WBDTD.
Michael Feeney has been upped to SVP/Corporate Communications for A&E Television Networks. He will oversee the expanded AETN Corporate Communications Department and will report to Abbe Raven, President/CEO. In addition, Dan Silberman has been advanced to Senior Director/Publicity, reporting to Bob DeBitetto, EVP/General Manager.
Barbara Shapiro, Director/Ad Sales & Marketing for Cynopsis, has decided to leave the company to pursue other avenues of interest. Barbara had been with us for a little over a year, and has called on many of you on behalf of Cynopsis. We wish her all the best in her new ventures and adventures.
