Cynopsis: Kids!
03.08.13
Good morning. It’s Friday, March 8, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…
Smosh-ed: Alloy Digital, operator of youth-driven Smosh, the most-subscribed channel on YouTube and a haven for kids, tweens and teens, is in the money. The company yesterday announced it secured a $30 million Series A investment from ABS Capital Partners. The deal speaks volumes about the way kids consume media and how that media can be monetized.
At more than 8 million subscribers, kid/teen haven Smosh is the jewel Alloy’s crown of online video companies that also includes B5 Media, Clevver Media, Generate and The Escapist. Together the channels draw more than 12 million subscribers. Smosh sister channel Smosh Games is already up to 1.6 million subscribers. Across its channels, Alloy targets 12-34 year olds.
Alloy CEO Matt Diamond spoke to Cynopsis Kids! about the younger end of the demographic. “The pace continues to grow exponentially; these kids are growing up as a generation that has never known traditional TV like their parents. They don’t know what it’s like to wait around till 8 or 9 to watch something, and that changes their consumption patterns, dramatically.”
Northern Exposure: The tentacles extending from Canadian phone giant Bell’s proposed $3.38 billion takeover of Canadian indie broadcaster Astral Media could reshape Canada’s children’s television market. So it wasn’t surprising the issue was front and center at yesterday’s Prime Time in Ottawa (PTiO) conference.
“We are also confronted with a pending sea change in children’s programming and animation in this country,” Michael Hennessey, president/CEO of the Canadian Media Production Assn., told attendees. “At the CMPA our job is to help our members navigate change. These days that’s a bit like racing an avalanche down a ski hill.”
Regulatory approval of the Bell-Astral deal by the CRTC (the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission) is contingent on a series of asset sales, including Bell’s stake in English-language Family Channel, which includes Disney channels in Canada and the French-language Disney Junior. Bell also entered into a deal pending regulatory with competitor Corus Entertainment for Corus to purchase the stakes in kids channels Teletoon and its French-language counterpart, sister net Teletoon Retro, and Cartoon Network Canada it doesn’t already own. Not only would the sale would render Corus the sole owner of these network, but in a separate deal with Shaw Media Corus also would take full ownership of ABC Spark, the Canadian English-language network that heavily programs ABC Family content.
Kids content is helping to spur homegrown television development, Hennessey said, and is pulling its weight across the border. “Canadian children’s and youth programming perform strongly with shows like Spatalot, Mr. Young, Johnny Test, and Joe and Jack selling worldwide, and scoring well on major U.S. networks,” he said.
