Good morning, it’s Friday, March 7, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Apple announced the next generation of the iPhone due out in June will support Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, meaning that the business world will now be able to use it for Blackberry-like functions such as syncing corporate email and calendars. (The company said Nike and Disney have already been testing the service internally.) Apple also officially opened up its internal APIs to allow 3rd party software developers to create applications utilizing the innovative “Cocoa Touch” interface. iTunes will become the exclusive online retail outlet for iPhone apps, some of which will be offered for free if in an ad supported model is chosen. Developers will get to keep 70% of the sales revenue generated monthly from each application.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Fox Sports announced it will produce its entire line up of Major League Baseball games this season in HD, beginning with its first Saturday Baseball Game of the Week on April 5.
 
Mark Ecko Entertainment
signed a licensing deal with Showtime Networks to develop a console videogame around serial killer drama Dexter.
 
AT&T’s U-verse TV service launched a VOD recommendation service with online movie review site Rotten Tomatoes. U-verse customers can help make their movie selection by searching for the site’s “Certified Fresh” accolade.
 
DisneyChannel.com
said it received nearly 50 million votes in a recent global poll, which offered kids a chance to shape elements of the upcoming original movie The Cheetah Girls One World.


~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Venture capitalist John Doerr (of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers) unveiled a $100 million developer’s fund to get the ball rolling on new iPhone applications. The “iFund” will target a variety of areas including location based services, entertainment, social networking and mobile commerce applications. 
 
Eyespot introduced a do-it-yourself white label online video delivery service providing a variety of tools and options for a monthly subscription fee. Eyespot can deliver professional or user-generated fare via online or mobile with in-stream ad options from Google AdSense for Video, Tremor Media, adap.tv and others.


~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
A New York judge upheld a December arbitration ruling prohibiting the West Coast-based Academy of TV Arts & Sciences from launching its own Broadband Emmy without permission from the New York-based National Academy of TV Arts & Sciences, reports Variety.
 
Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA) introduced the Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act of 2008 this week that would ensure that taxes are collected on regulated internet gambling activities. The legislation follows a bill introduced by Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) that would license online gambling operations under the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Yahoo introduced two new online video advertising formats this week. One contains a clickable ad that appears as a semi-transparent message over the video. The other contains a 3-second interactive “bumper” that expands into a banner ad above the viewer. Yahoo also announced it would soon offer overlay ads through recently acquired subsidiary Maven Networks.
 
These formats should help justify a bullish new report from Bear Stearns projecting web video advertising will grow to $4.3 billion in 2011. The investment bank thinks YouTube will earn $90 million in video ad revenue this year, representing 7% of total U.S. video advertising revenue.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Professionally produced and user generated video views are forecast to grow by a combined 43.4% in 2008, according to a new report from AccuStream iMedia Research, following 55.8 billion views and a 57.6% increase in 2007. Entertainment captured a combined 17.1 billion views, for a 33.1% share (professional sites 52.4%/UGV sites 47.6%.) Partner channels on YouTube accounted for a 10.6% share of total video views in 2006 – 2007 and are forecast at 15.4% in 2008. Comedians/Directors captured 8.9% total viewing share on YouTube in 2006 – 2007 and is forecast at 11.1% in 2008. Universal Music Group claimed the top channel partner position, with a 29.1% share of the category.

Livestation hired former President of CNN International Chris Cramer as Strategic Advisor for the live TV news broadband service.
 
Toronto-based NetShelter Technology Media added three new executives to its sales team. Eric Kazanjian joins as VP/ East Coast Sales, based out of the new New York office. Michael Lamattina comes on as Regional Sales Director/Northeast and Southeast, to be based in Boston and reporting to Mr. Kazanjian. James Loza will serve as Director of San Francisco Bay Area & Northwest Sales, reporting to newly-named SVP/Sales Todd Carville.
 


 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

The New York Times describes Wowowow.com as a “smarter iVillage.” It’s a new community site targeting 40+ year-old women launching tomorrow with financing from Liz Smith, Lesley Stahl, Peggy Noonan, Mary Wells and Joni Evans. Another life affirming women’s site already up and running is firstwivesworld.com, a community site for divorced women loaded with interesting content. (Call it a theknot.com for the been there done that.) The site recently kicked off an entertainment division with a spicy fictional blog called “Hot Flashes” created by TV writer Mimi Schmir (Grey’s Anatomy), about a pre-menopausal mom who’s forced to reinvent herself after her husband leaves her for a younger woman.
 
Correction: CBSSports.com is adding online video coverage from the #15 & #16 holes from the Masters this year, not the #7 hole.
