CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

03/31/06

Good Morning. It’s Friday, March 31, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The US Senate Judiciary Committee has voted 12-6 for a bill that would allow TV cameras to cover Supreme Court proceedings.  Before you get out the popcorn, there is a provision whereby if five or more of the court Justices believe TV coverage will adversely effect one or both parties in the matter before them, then no go on the cameras. Henry Schleiff, CEO of Court TV is understandably pleased with the new bill. “The United States Senate Judiciary Committee has reflected the will of the people who want to be able to see and hear the third branch of their government for themselves. We hope the full Senate will now pass this bill, which will not only provide important educational benefits but will also increase confidence in the American system of justice.”

Tonight’s Premieres:
WB:  Survival of the Richest at 8p
MTV2: The Andy Milonakis Show at 9p and Wonder Showzen at 930p

Tonight’s Finale:
ABC:
In Justice at 9p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *
Comcast Corporation and NBC Universal have a new agreement which will make select broadcast and cable shows available to Comcast’s ON DEMAND VOD service customers in NBC O&O markets starting in May. The NBC primetime shows will cost 99 cents each to Comcast Digital Cable customers and will be ready to download as early as midnight following their broadcast. The late night and daytime programs will be offered at no charge, and the cable shows will be added to the ON DEMAND roster in Comcast VOD markets later this year at no additional cost.  Shows included in the service will be Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: CI, The Office, Las Vegas, Conviction, Monk, Battlestar Galactica, Ghost Hunters, Celebrity Poker Showdown, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and the daytime soap Passions.

Programming note from CBS:  The Amazing Race is moving to Wednesdays at 8p, starting next week.  The move displaces Out of Practice and Courting Alex, tho CBS says both are expected to return.  And filling the new vacancy at 10p on Tuesdays will be repeats of crime dramas, the first two weeks being CSI.

CBS CFO Fred Reynolds has squelched rumors that the network is looking into an Univision buy.  At a New York investor conference this week, he said “Univision is a great company, but there are two major issues for us. One is valuation, and the other is regulation.”  The recent rumors were fueled by a New York Post story referring to a potential bid evaluation from CBS and another partner.  The network is quite close to the FCC’s maximum limit for TV station ownership in 39% of U.S. television households.

And one more item on CBS – the network and DIC have unveiled the programming slate for the 2006/07 CBS’s Saturday Morning Secret Slumber Party the new Saturday morning block, which will launch September 16, 2006,  A time rundown will be announced later.  Targeted to K6-12, the three hour block will be Educational/Informational (E/I) compliant and will include both animated and live action shows.  The block will also feature interstitial wrap-around segments with messaging promoting healthy eating and lifestyle choices.  Both the interstitial segments and the new series are being developed in consultation with noted researchers, educators, professors and media experts in the areas of kid health and education.  Check out today’s edition of Cynopsis: Kids! for the lineup of shows.

The Discovery Channel will debut two new programs in its Perfect Disaster series. Mega Flood on Sunday is about what would happen if the Thames River in London were to break its barriers; and Fire Storm premiering on April 9 is about how Sydney, Australia faces the threat of a major wildfire each year.

Another new show from the U.K. is about to rock American TV. Empire Square premiers on fuse network April 18, with six half-hour episodes, as part of its “fuseday tuesday” block. The animated series — co-created by Dave Rowntree, drummer for Blur, and music industry insiders Ant Cauchi and Lloyd Salmons — has been labeled by the U.K. press as the “British South Park.” The show is about three foul-mouthed buddies, Rabbit, Hooks and Richie, their get rich quick schemes and pursuit of music superstardom with biting social commentary, all set in the fictional location of Empire Square.

Three new series coming to The Weather Channel, beginning with Abrams & Bettes On the Weather. Airing nightly 8-9p beginning September 25, talent and meteorologists Stephanie Abrams and Mike Bettes will host a live show of feature stories, breaking weather news, and interviews,  all with an interactive component with the viewing audience.  Our Climate with Dr. Heidi Cullen looks at some of the most important weather and earthly environmental issues.  Dr. Cullen will present a variety of viewpoints with experts and guests on all sides of the issues.  And coming to Sunday nights, Epic Conditions from Warren Miller Entertainment.  This show mixes extreme sports and extreme weather, from surfers off Hawaii to mountain bikers in Utah, enticing the world’s greatest adventure athletes to one-of-a-kind destinations.

MyNetworkTV has added 30 new affiliates to its list which brings its clearances up to 96 total stations to date, raising the total US coverage to 63%. The new affiliates include:

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group will become the first movie studio to provide a download-to-own movies day and date with the movie’s release on DVD.  The first movie this will apply to is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, scheduled for release to DVD and now also for download and on April 4 at midnight.  Here’s the hitch – it’s only available right now in the Netherlands and the Dutch-speaking Belgium, with no information on when it may be available here in the US.  Also on that date, under the licensing agreement with a specialty retailer in the Netherlands called Free Record Shop, customers will also be able to select from some 100 Warner Bros. films and legally download a permanent copy of these movies from www.FreeRecordShop.nl. Can you download from this website if your not in the Netherlands? Well, I haven’t tried it yet because it’s not quite April 4, but I may!  All of these movie downloads will be copy protected by Microsoft’s Windows Digital Rights Management Software.

 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *NBC‘s comedy pilot Twenty Good Years starring John Lithgow, has added Jeffrey Tambor as co-star.  The two men, now in their 50’s, experience a series of thoughtful epiphanies, and decide on how they will live the next 20 years of their lives.

Did you see this yesterday? There’s an extra piece of information you need to know – they’re looking for people in Southern California only. If you’ve already responded, they’ll hold onto your story.  Casting Call:   A&E has a new series and they’re looking for couples (any kind of couples) who disagree over design, and are eager for an accomplished designer to help you get over these little hurdles. You even get to check out the designer’s work before throwing your name into the hat – www.44blue.com/design. If interested, send in your story and your design challenge to [email protected]
