Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Friday, March 28, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
YouTube unveiled a new metrics tool dubbed “YouTube Insight,” providing producers with more precise data on who’s watching their videos, where they are in the country, how often they’re watching and when peak viewing times are. The tool should also help provide much needed context and performance data to marketers, the company suggests. For instance, a movie studio can upload several different trailers then adjust their TV spot buys depending on which trailer catches on in a particular region.
MLB Advanced Media is ready to hit one out of the park this year with a major redesign of MLB.com. The site is improving its video player once again to support a streaming rate of 1.2 Mbps, presented in 16×9 aspect ratio for the first time. Built on Microsoft’s new Silverlight platform, the player will also enable metadata-based video search and other goodies. Look here for more details on Monday when the site officially relaunches.
Speaking of baseball, overbuilder RCN is set to deliver up to 80 weekly out-of-market MLB Extra Innings games in its systems, including select games to be broadcast in HD. Comcast, Cox, Time Warner and Advance/Newhouse-owned In Demand will deliver the games in both standard and high def to cable operators, leaving it up to individual MSOs to decide whether or not they want to spend the extra bandwidth. A year ago fans were up at arms when MLB almost signed an exclusive deal with DirecTV for the Extra Innings package.
Warner Bros. Domestic Television’s TMZ and TMZ.com launched an ad-supported, cross-carrier mobile website for the show, delivering breaking celebrity news and on demand video to handsets. The site, accessible by typing tmz.com into a web-enabled phone, was designed by Quattro Wireless, which will also serve ads, along with AOL subsidiary Platform A’s Third Screen Media.
Listen up sports fans – now you can listen to Mike and Mike in the Morning on your mobile phone. Verizon’s V CAST mobile TV service adds an exclusive simulcast of ESPN Radio from this morning.
Showtime is hoping to trump up interest in season two of The Tudors offering the first episode for free on over 60 partner sites including Yahoo, MSN, AOL and the CBS Audience Network. Original episodes will be available for purchase throughout the season (which kicks off Sunday night) on iTunes, Amazon’s Unbox and (for Showtime subscribers) via Comcast, DirecTV and Charter portals.
CALL FOR CONTENT: Sundance Channel will pay $10,000 for the next “Big Idea” to save the planet. The network is seeking shorts for its Big Ideas for a Small Planet series, returning April 1st. Contestants are asked to submit a one-minute short or photo essay to sundancechannel.com/bigideascontest between April 1 and May 20. Sundance will select the top 25 entries then users will vote from May 27-June 24, based on creativity, theme, feasibility and presentation.
Social media ad solutions provider Lotame closed on a $10 million round of series A financing last month, led by Battery Ventures with participation from existing angel investors Hillcrest Management and Betaworks. Lotame is focused on monetizing midsize social networks by creating delivering customizable communities to advertisers built around actions users perform online, according to founder/CEO Andrew Monfried, a veteran of Advertising.com. The company currently monitors anonymous actions taken on 16 (1 million+ user) video, gaming and social media sites. Advertisers are able to target audiences based on not only interests but also how they interact with the platforms.
Here’s another L-word start up. Former AOL executives Laurence Hooper and Dan Goodman launched Loladex this week, a local search engine built to help friends share recommendations on Facebook. Users can ask friends to recommend local businesses then add their own ratings to the results.
What’s that old adage – keep your friends close but your enemies closer? Comcast and P2P file sharing company BitTorrent, opposing forces in the Net Neutrality debate, are now working together to figure out how to deliver P2P data more efficiently. Comcast says it hopes to have a platform agnostic capacity management technique developed by the end of 2008.
CPM rates remain miniscule on social networks despite amazing membership growth, according to a report in Wired. Display ads on MySpace, Facebook and Bebo managed only 13 cents/1,000 impressions. Yahoo’s CPM is estimated at $13. Video ads on MySpace TV run just $25/1,000 views. Local media sites and professional social network Linkedin are faring much better, charging as much as $75/1,000 views or impressions.
The sky (and stock price) continues to fall on Google as comScore‘s paid click data report reveals that ad clicks fell 3% in February from the previous month, after dropping 7.5% to 532 million in January. Paid clicks were up 3% year-over-year, after growing at a rate of 30%-40% throughout 2007.
CBS’ Last.fm named F. Scott Woods to be SVP & Managing Director, Germany. He comes over from Google, where he headed up strategic partnerships and business development in Northern and Central Europe. Germany has Last.fm’s second largest user base outside of the U.S.
SVP of Cisco Development Organization Operations Manny Rivelo was appointed to the Board of Directors of VOIP and mobile applications provider CallWave.
ZapRoot is the flagship online show of ViroPop, an environmentally-themed Next New Networks property that has everything you should look for in a web show. It educates viewers about green trends in a vibrant, easy-to-digest manner, sprinkling in sardonic humor, pop cultural references and fun visuals. Host “Eco-Chick” moves faster than a T1 connection on steroids, but the site provides handy links to sites she references so that you don’t have to try to write them down on the fly. The show is produced by environmentalist Damien Somerset and indie filmmaker Sarah Szalavitz, whose day job is Director of Content Development at Veoh Networks.
Correction: Nielsen VideoCensus aggregate results for February were in the billions – 6.3 billion total video streams, compared to 5.9 billion last month. Also, these are U.S. only results.
