Cynopsis

3/23/07

Good morning, it’s Friday, March 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

After seven months of negotiations, the deal got done after all. News Corp. and NBC Universal announced a partnership for the digital age yesterday, planning a new jointly-run entertainment portal -as yet unnamed – that will aggregate the biggest collection of TV content on the web and create “the largest advertising platform on earth.” The agreement will encompass the vast libraries of television and film content from each of the companies’ broadcast, cable and film brands. The deal also contains a distribution component that will make video content available across the leading portals of the net AOL, MSN, Yahoo and MySpace, who will share in the ad revenue and customize its delivery as they see fit.

Tonight’s Premiere:
VH1:  Acceptable.TV at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Oxygen’s Tuesday night premiere of Tori & Dean: Inn Love (1030p) delivered a 0.6 rating with W18-49, which happens to be the highest-rated series premiere with this particular demo in the network’s history. The first episode also drew in a 0.8 rating with both W18-34 and W18-24.

Starz Entertainment sued Buena Vista Television for copyright infringement and breach of contract after Disney began selling movies online licensed exclusively to Starz. Under the terms of agreements struck in 1993 and 1999, and extended by BVT in 2005, Disney is prohibited from selling films for distribution on the internet during the period of Starz’ window of exclusivity, according to Starz. The suit claims Starz paid over $1 billion for the rights. Disney, the first of the major studios to sell TV shows on iTunes, began selling movies on Wal-Mart‘s online store when it launched last month. Starz launched its own streaming and download service, Vongo, in January of 2006.

This week the 24-hour Discovery HD Theater increased its national distribution to 11 million subscribers as it embarked on Cablevision, the fifth largest MSO on its high-definition programming schedule.

Another note to self:  Here’s the companion site to Discovery Channel‘s Planet Earth series – Planet-earth.com .  (can you tell I really like this kinda stuff?)

Psst, hey buddy … wanna earn a quick $350 bucks?  This is easy – but only four of you can win.  Here’s how it works: If you’re currently a college student, all you have to do is write a 350 word essay about television – anything at all about television that appeals to you, or disappoints you, or makes you laugh, makes you tune in or tune out.  Whatever you want – just make sure it’s about TV.   Then, send it to me at [email protected] Subject: Cynopsis Weekender College Edition, and be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted.  The top four will get paid $350 and their essay will be published in the special Weekender edition on April 26, Cynopsis Weekender College Edition.  Deadline is April 20th at midnight – Good luck!

Upfront Update: SCI FI CHANNEL

SCI FI Channel held its upfront presentation Wednesday night and following are a few program highlights for the 2007-2008 season:

  • Derren Brown Project – premieres in July, title TBD; after success on British television, American viewers will meet the man who can mentally control what others do. Through mind control, Derren has encouraged people to give up their car keys or wallets to strangers, and even inspired them to rob an armored car. Known as “part James Bond, part Yoda” Derren will star in this new six-episode, one-hour original series produced by Objective Productions.
  • Tin Man (wt) – six-hour miniseries scheduled to premiere this December; production will begin this month in Vancouver on a modern sci-fi version of L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Recent additions to the cast include Neal McDonough, Kathleen Robertson and Raoul Trujillo. These three join previously announced cast members Zooey Deschanel, Alan Cummings and Richard Dreyfuss. Produced by RHI Entertainment.
  • Ghost Hunters – 13 new episodes of the one-hour weekly series are ordered for season four returning next year. In addition, bonus episodes are added for this current season with six new ones scheduled for this spring and six more in the fall. The show’s ghost explorers, Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson will encounter paranormal activity in the U.S. as well as London and Ireland. The series is produced in association with Pilgrim Films and Television.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Alanna Ubach has been cast in the Fox comedy pilot Playing Chicken from Werner-Gold-Miller and Warner Bros. TV, about two brothers – one taking care of the other after an accident leaves him as a paraplegic. While that doesn’t sound very funny, their opposite personalities adds the lighter touch.  Ubach plays the physical therapist.

Jennifer Coolidge (another Legally Blonde alum as Ubach above) has been cast in ABC‘s comedy pilot Family of the Year from 20th TV, along with Alan Ruck.  The two will play the Family parents – she a matriarchal character and former beauty queen, he’s more of a go-along kinda guy.

Anna Chlumsky has been cast in the lead role of CW‘s comedy pilot Eight Day’s a Week from Hazy Mills and CBS Paramount TV.  The story revolves around four twentysomethings who are all the #1’s of hugely top level executives in New York City.

Chris Kattan will be the host of CBS‘ game and hidden camera pilot project Game Show in My Head from Katalyst, Hat Trick and Fox 21.

AMC has announced an aggressive slate of new original projects in the works utilizing the talents from many in the industry: The Continuum – Tom Fontana (OZ); an untitled Freddie DeMann Music Project – Freddie DeMann (The Life and Death of Peter Sellers) and William Finkelstein (Law & Order); Welcome to Bedlam – Kip Koenig (Grey’s Anatomy) and David Semel (Heroes, House); Vows – Karen Hall (E-Ring, Judging Amy); Gonzo – Michael Oates Palmer (Shark, West Wing); The Bannerman Solution – Jason Rothenberg (Girlfight) and Scott Villa (The Simple Life); American Made – Adam Glass (All About the Andersons), Bob Cooper and Orin Woinsky of Landscape Entertainment; and Buried: – Stacy Title and Jonathan Penner (The Lone Ranger, 2003). These projects join the development slate of these previously announced series:

  • Mad Men – set to premiere this summer; the network’s first original drama series from writer/producer Matthew Weiner of The Sopranos.
  • The Prisoner – remake of the original 1960s classic; a co-production between AMC and U.K.’s Granada and Sky One.
  • Breaking Bad – one-hour drama pilot from writer/producer Vince Gilligan of the X-Files.
  • Untitled Western – one-hour pilot from Walter Hill who directed AMC’s original movie Broken Trail as well as Ron Parker.
  • Hustle – the fourth season is set to premiere April 18 at 10p which is a co-production with the network and BBC.
