AOL has appointed Susan Lyne as Chief Executive Officer of its Brand Group. She will manage AOL’s content brands (with the exception of The Huffington Post), and will oversee all aspects of the Brand Group’s growth strategy. Responsibilities include increasing traffic across properties, partnerships with advertisers and publishers, and bringing in new talent, “with a particular focus on content, design, programming, and product.” Lyne is the current Vice Chairman at Gilt and sits on the AOL board, and was formerly the President and CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia as well as the former President of ABC Entertainment.
Yahoo Finance has premiered a new live daily show called Hot Stock Minute. Hosted by Lauren Lyster, the show will provide the latest financial news top business headlines. In addition to video, Hot Stick Minute’s original reporting will include associated articles and social media content. The show will air every weekday at 8:30am ET, live from Yahoo Studios and the NASDAQ.
Digital video platform Chill has grabbed exclusive VOD streaming rights to offer comedian Doug Benson’s next documentary, The Greatest Film Ever Rolled, to users directly for download. Benson’s decision to release the movie directly to fans – a strategy that’s becoming quite commonplace within the comedy world- allows him to retain full ownership of the content. He will also be able to offer “bundles” that include merchandise, t-shirts, and other goods along with the documentary. The film will be available on Chill.com for $7.99 beginning March 11.
NBC Sports Digital has launched MotorSportsTalk on NBCSports.com. The section brings racing fans the latest news and video content from Formula One, IZOD IndyCar Series, and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as well as other motorsports competitions. MotorSportsTalk will also feature videos from NBC’s and NBC Sports Networks’ F1 and IndyCar programming.
Bravo has just been announced as the only TV entity on a list of the twenty brands with the most loyal fans on Facebook, according to a study from LoudDoor that surveyed more than one million responses. “We changed our philosophy in how we speak to fans,” explains Ellen Stone, Bravo’s Senior Vice President, Marketing. “Our mission is to make friends, not fans. When Kandi Burruss from the Real Housewives of Atlanta got engaged, we didn’t just post an announcement on our Facebook page. We gave people the opportunity to send their best wishes. It had 70% virility. That’s a different way of looking at virility, right?” As for the future, Stone says Bravo’s plan “is to keep giving fresh content and drive the pop culture conversation.”
UrbanClout is an upcoming SVOD service offering original urban lifestyle and entertainment programming. In conjunction with the March 5 launch, UrbanClout will debut its first original series, Strip Club Queens: Atlanta. The documentary focuses on a group of exotic dancers. UrbanClout will be available for $2.99/month. Users can also pay $0.99 to watch individual episodes of shows.
YouTube multi-channel fashion network StyleHaul has raised $6.5 million in a Series B round led by Bertelsmann’s Digital Media Investments arm, according to AllThingsD. Existing investors like RezVen Partners also contributed. Why This Matters: While it’s not at the level of Google’s investment in Machinima or Time Warner pumping money into Maker Studios, it’s a reminder that indie creators are finding true quantifiable success on YouTube.

Facebook has confirmed that it’s acquiring the Atlas Advertiser Suite from Microsoft. In a blog post, Facebook said that it will look to invest in scaling Atlas’ back-end measurement capabilities as well as enhancing its current suite of ad tools for desktop and mobile.
Why This Matters: “Facebook hasn’t been at the forefront of ROI-driven metrics, especially compared to Google. But brands need – and should be able – to understand how a user’s Facebook activity influences his or her purchase decision. It also allows Facebook to participate in the ROI conversation much better than before, now that they can track a paid click to a user purchase,” says Abby Ross, VP/Product at Blueye, a Facebook Preferred Marketing Developer (PMD). Google will have to watch out.
Solve Media and comScore have launched a new research tool called Native Insights that enables advertisers to organically collect survey responses without interrupting the user experience or serving up a branded message. Users can skip display or video ads in exchange for typing in the brand’s name, product, or message. This way, the advertiser is ideally able to collect unbiased, actionable data in real time.
66% of consumers in the US stream video on their tablets two to three times a week or more, according to the results of a Rovi survey on mobile streaming habits. Along with the users in the US, respondents in Italy and Spain reported the highest frequency in streaming video on tablet devices (73% and 71%, respectively, streaming video two to three times or more during a week). People in the UK watch the most TV shows (33% of respondents), while users in the US and Germany generally prefer movies (35% and 30%, respectively).It’s a different story on mobile phones, with users largely saying they watch more user-generated content. Other findings include:
- 66% of UK tablet users spend an average of 30 minutes or more viewing streaming content in a single session. That’s the most of any country surveyed, with the US ranking second at 62% of tablet users.
- 93% of US tablet users and 80% of US mobile phone users said they believe tablets are a good way to watch movies and TV shows.
- About 80% of all tablet users streamed most of their video while inside the home, while roughly 15% consumed a majority of their video while commuting.
Mobile devices are playing a more instrumental role in the in-store decision-making process, according to the results of a February survey from Ipsos MediaCT, which was commissioned by the IAB. While 42% of in-store mobile device-using shoppers ultimately made their purchase online, 30% made their purchase in the store. In addition, those who used their mobile phones while shopping were also more likely to make an unplanned purchase (32% in-store versus 22% online).
Justin Williams has been named VP/Digital for TNT and TBS. He will oversee all awareness and consumer engagement for the networks’ shows and brands across all digital platforms, as well as the networks’ continued development and implementation of TV Everywhere services. Based in Atlanta, he will report to Dennis Adamovich, SVP/Digital, Affiliate, Lifestyle, and Enterprise Commerce for TNT, TBS, and Turner Classic Movies.
ChaCha has added two new General Managers to its executive team. David Slade will manage the expansion of ChaCha’s business in the online Q&A space. Michael Calabrese will oversee the development and implementation of the company’s mobile apps. Slade will be based in ChaCha’s recently opened San Francisco office, while Calabrese will operate out of the company’s national headquarters in Carmel, Indiana. Both will report to CEO Scott Jones.
