Top o’ the mornin’ to ya! It’s Friday, March 17, 2006,17, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC has given the official “Go” to a drama for next season called Kidnapped from Sony Pictures Television and 25C Productions. The show stars Dana Delany and Timothy Hutton, and the season begins with the kidnapping of a wealthy couple’s son, and subsequent investigation where everybody is a suspect and nothing is a perfect as it seems.  Kidnapped is added to the short list of new series for the fall which also includes The Black Donnellys, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip with Matthew Perry.

SOAPnet will soon air same-day episodes of the CBS soap, The Young & the Restless from Sony Pictures Television, in a new multi-year deal starting April 24. The same-day Y&R episodes will air at 7p Monday through Friday and again in a Saturday night marathon. SOAPnet also has access to Y&R historical episodes for stunts and specials.

USA Network has picked up the cable rights to off-net series NCIS, distributed by Paramount Domestic Television, according to Variety. The five year deal covers 88 episodes, and will go to USA in 2008.  Paramount may well also sell the show to broadcast stations, and has also retained the VOD rights.  And while USA could have picked up the current season re-purposing rights, it has opted out for this year, tho may revisit that option next year.

Mark Burnett Productions’ series Rock Star (working title) eliminates one rock star hopeful each week until one is standing.  The winner becomes the lead singer in a new band called Supernova.  All of that you probably knew already.  Here’s the new stuff:  The other musicians in the Supernova band are drummer Tommy Lee, bass guitarist Jason Newsted and lead guitarist Gilby Clarke.  Those three will also be on the judges’ panel for the show.  Once the winner is decided, the band will cut an original album to be released next fall, and then go on a world tour beginning in 2007.  Rock Star is scheduled to premiere this summer on CBS.

ABC and sister cable network ABC Family have picked up the rights to eight feature films, distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution:  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Polar Express and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Cinderella Story, Scooby-Doo 2, and Looney Tunes: Back in Action.  According to Variety, the license fees add to $90 million, with ABC Family picking up the lion’s share of the cost at $60 million. 

From the “Auntie Em, it’s a twister!” files: Discovery Channel‘s six-part bad-weather series Perfect Disaster premieres Sunday, March 19, from 9-11p.  Using CGI rendering, viewers will see the inside of terrible storms and how to spot the warning signs of approaching extreme weather.  The show is produced for Discovery Channel by Impossible Pictures.  Will Aslett is EP for Impossible Pictures, and Gaynelle Evans is EP for Discovery Channel.

A new series for E! Entertainment – The Daily 10 is a daily 30m series set to launch on March 27 at 730p, is a countdown of the day’s top pop culture stories, covering stories not seen E! News.  The new series will be hosted by Debbie Matenopoulos, Catt Sadler and Sal Masekela.

Court TV news anchor Vinnie Politan will begin hosting Court TV Morning Radio on Monday, March 20 from 6-9a, SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 110. The weekday call-in radio news program features in-depth commentary on trials and their latest developments, as well as topics related to crime, justice and the legal system.

Discovery Communications and Nokia are now teaming up to deliver pre-loaded content on two of Nokia’s wireless and mobile devices. The first phase of this new global collaboration will introduce Discovery’s programming in a Best of Discovery montage clip featuring nature and city scenes.
 
Add these 18 new affiliates to The CW‘s list of stations, now covering 66% of the country and 26 of the top 30 markets. Of this group, 13 are currently WB affiliates, while the three stations in Lexington and the US Virgin Islands are UPN stations.  San Juan is a dual UPN/WB station; Augusta and Bend are currently digital channels of NBC affiliates in those markets.

ABC’s drama pilot Ugly Betty has seen the departure of Charlotte Ross from the cast, but the addition of Vanessa Williams.

Also leaving an ABC pilot is Bruno Campos who has stepped back from the comedy project Southern Comfort, in favor of the lead role in a pilot with Fox called The Wedding Album.

Also at ABC in the drama pilot Drift, Jason O’Mara has been cast as a NYC detective with insomnia.  O’Mara is also in ABC’s In Justice, and Drift will take “second position”, meaning he’ll stick with In Justice if it continues.

CBS‘ untitled comedy about the different phases a relationship as seen thru the eyes of a young engaged couple, an older married couple and a single guy, has cast Megyn Price as the married woman, joining Patrick Warburton who plays the husband.

Sherijo Damico and Shawn Gannon have both been upped to Regional VP/Sales and Affiliate Marketing for the Western and Central Regions of Playboy TV, respectively.  Both report to Gary Rosenson, SVP/Sales and Affiliate Marketing.  Sherijo is based in Los Angeles, and Shawn works in Chicago.  Other advancements at Playboy TV include Julie Lee (Western Region), Jim Albertone (Central Region), and Lee Yi (Eastern Region), who have all become Senior Manager/ Sales and Affiliate Marketing.

ABC News has added Sonya Crawford as a Correspondent. Sonya will be an overnight and early morning news anchor based in Washington, DC, and will contribute to ABC’s World News Now and World News This Morning, as well as to Good Morning America and ABC News Now. Her new assignment begins Monday.

Toni Egger is named VP/Development for The Science Channel and Military Channel, reporting to Jeff Hasler on day-to-day development issues and to Abby Greensfelder, who oversees all programming and development for Discovery Channel, Science Channel and Military Channel.  Toni will be a senior staff member in strategic planning development and network direction and management of The Science Channel and Military Channel, charged with creating and implementing overall programming development strategies that include series, specials and events for both networks.

Correction:  Yesterday’s ratings indicated Fox earned a 10.7/26 from 8-10p among A18-49.  Not so – Fox’s two-hour American Idol averaged a 13.5/32.  Big difference.

Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis:  Fox led the group on Wednesday night with an overall 6.7/17 A18-49, according to fast affiliate rating from Nielsen Media Research.  CBS was #2 with a 3.9/10, followed by ABC 2.6/7, NBC 2.4/6, UPN 1.8/5, Univ 1.7/4, WB 0.9/2, Tele 0.5/1.  At 8p CBS and Fox tied, each delivering a 4.4/12 – CBS with a special March Madness Wednesday edition of Survivor, and Fox with the time period premiere of Bones.  At 9p Fox kicked off the hour with the results show of American Idol posting an 11.4/28, followed by the premiere of The Loop which also won the half hour with a 6.5/16. At 10p CBS led with a 3.7/10 for a repeat of CSI: NY.
