Good morning, it’s Friday, March 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
AOL bought its way into the social networking revolution, acquiring UK-based Bebo for $850 million in cash. Current President Johanna Shields will remain at the helm of Bebo, known in the entertainment world as the home of interactive web drama Kate Modern, currently in its second season. Time Warner sees the deal as a chance to combine AOL’s industry-leading AIM platform with Bebo’s content and younger-skewing 22 million unique user base to create a more compelling play for advertisers. (Like widgets, instant messaging has yet to generate much ad revenue thus far.) The deal comes just one week after AOL’s launch of Open AIM 2.0 initiative and the announcement by Apple of a downloadable AIM application for the iPhone.
You’re never too young to learn to be green, figures Nickelodeon. The network is rolling out a multiplatform campaign next month to empower kids to take action on environmental issues, built around a multiplayer online game The Big Green Help designed to spur grassroots activity. Nick.com will introduce the game in April at www.thebiggreenhelp.com, teaching techniques on curtailing energy waste, encouraging recycling and planting more trees.
Sundancechannel.com and mobile content service Helio will premiere Isabella Rossellini‘s 8-part short film series literally about the birds and bees of insect life beginning May 5, 2008(a month before they appear on Sundance’s VOD service and two months before they show up on air.)
LGBT-themed here! Networks has recruited HIV/AIDS activist Sherri Beachfront to host a podcast about her perspective being an “HIV + Straight Girl in a Queer World.”
And they’re off! Interactive horseracing service TVG Broadband signed a deal to make a selection of its short form video content available on Hulu.com, including racehorse and personality profiles, expert analysis and handicapping information.
Facebook got a lot of mileage out of widgets; let’s see what MySpace can do. MySpace launched an initial gallery of applications built upon the MySpace Developer Platform about 5 weeks after the site soft launched the OpenSocial-based program. There are game widgets, quizzes, a Twitter sync app, a SlideTV widget and plenty of other goodies being added by the minute.
Social network hi5 – third largest in the world with 38 million uniques according to comScore – announced it too will launch a developers’ platform based on Google’s OpenSocial standards.
Vote for your favorite goofy videos in the 2007 YouTube Video Awards, broken down into 12 categories: Adorable, Comedy, Commentary, Creative, Eyewitness, Inspirational, Instructional, Politics, Music, Series, Short Film and Sports. Each user can vote once per day from March 13-March 19. Winners will be revealed on YouTube on March 21.
Speaking of goofy videos, MyToons announced the winners of its international Bumper Blastoff Animation Contest at SXSW. Contestants were asked to create original animated bumpers lasting 30 seconds or less, for a chance to win their share of $7000 in cash prizes.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
The road ahead on the internet superhighway looks like the 405 on a Friday afternoon, according to report by the New York Times. One of the more dire predictions from Nemertes Research projects demand for bandwidth will grow by 100 percent or more per year through 2011.
With News Corp. publically backing off on its interest in Yahoo, talks between Microsoft and Yahoo are slowly resuming according to a CNET report.
Google is preparing to launch a new Ad Manager service web publishers can use to manage online ad sales, according to The Wall Street Journal. The online tool, currently being tested by a beta group, will provide ad tracking and serving companies such as DoubleClick have charged publishers for until now. Instead, Google will take a commission on contextual Google ads the company will serve to publishers to help them fill empty slots on their sites.
Left leaning MoveON.org launched a new user generated ad contest Obama in 30 seconds, inviting amateur filmmakers “to help put Barak Obama over the top.” An all-star celebrity panel of judges including Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steve Buscemi and Oliver Stone will pick the winning video, and MoveOn will buy time to run the winning spot on national TV.
Zenith Media Services became the first subscriber to Nielsen & Integrated Media Measurement’s Out-of-Home measuring report, part of Nielsen’s A2/M2 “follow the video” initiative to track video usage across multiple platforms. The cell-phone based service provides metrics for TV viewing in bars, hotels, airports, etc. Zenith also subscribed to Nielsen’s Online VideoCensus and Mobile Audience Measurement Service products.
Nielsen’s A2/M2 initiative is progressing pretty much as planned with all indications pointing to traditional TV, TV via PC, TV via mobile and out of home measurement systems set to be operational by 2012, according to a progress report distributed among media planners by Janice Finkel-Greene, EVP/Director Futures and Technology for Initiative. “In some respects there are more questions than answers,” she said, as there is not a consensus formed yet among advertisers as to what information is really needed. “Nielsen is waiting for feedback,” said Ms. Finkel-Greene.
Bebo will give AOL a strong social networking presence in Europe, where according to the latest comScore data, 60% of its traffic initiates. (In January 2008, there were 11.4 million unique visitors from the United Kingdom to Bebo, about half of its worldwide total.) The site doesn’t fare as well in the U.S., where it had 4.8 million users who averaged 1 hour 40 minutes on the site for the month, less than half its Jan. worldwide average of 3.5 hours. Bebo’s share of U.S. visits was actually down 22% year-on-year in Feb. 2008, according to Hitwise.

Kaltura.com is a collaborative Wiki site for users who prefer to communicate with video and multimedia imagery instead of text. Its open source video platform enables like-minded groups to create rich-media mash ups that can be contributed to from users on multiple platforms. For instance, companies can use the software to add images and video to their in-house Wikis. Wiki creation site wikia (this links to wikia’s entertainment page) announced a partnership with Kaltura that will make it easy to do just that. With the Kaltura Collaborative Video Extension, any user can start a collaborative video project and upload clips, photos or audio tracks to the wiki.
