Following its $315 million purchase of the Huffington Post, AOL announced it would lay off another 20% of its workforce. More than two thirds of the 900 job cuts will occur in India. Another 200 jobs will be eliminated among editorial and technology staffers. Layoffs include veteran journalists from AOL’s top news sites, including PoliticsDaily, DailyFinance and WalletPop.
How’s this for a customization feature: Google is now allowing users to block out sites they have no interest in when pulling up search results. When you click on a result and then return to Google, you’ll find a new link next to “Cached” that reads “Block all example.com results.”
Google’s video sharing site YouTube launched new localized versions of the site in the Middle Eastern nations of Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Yemen, reports AllThingsD. The company also announced it is increasing its workforce by more than 30% in 2011, so get your resumes ready.
Both MLB and the NBA have completed integrations with the second-generation Apple TV to allow users to subscribe to out-of-market games using the device. (Both require the Apple TV 4.2 update, released alongside iOS 4.3.) Sports content has been seen as one of the major factors stemming the flow of more cord-cutting.
NCircle Entertainment has licensed children’s programming for the new IPTV edutainment service, MobileMUM.com. Programs such as Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat In the Hat Knows A Lot About That” and Jim Henson’s “Sid the Science Kid” will be delivered by Mobile MUM to Apple and Android devices.
Finnish casual game developer Rovio Mobile, creator of the megahit Angry Birds, raised a whopping $42 million in financing led by Accel Partners and Atomico Ventures. Felicis Ventures also participated in the round. Atomico’s Niklas Zennstrom, who co-founded Skype, Kazaa and Rdio, will be joining the board of Rovio. The Angry Birds franchise, which is now making virtual goods revenue off 40% of its new iOS customers, according to Rovio, is currently being developed as a Facebook game.
Another mobile game developer SCVNGR, which comes up with real world tasks for players to perform, introduced a new daily deal service in Boston and Philly dubbed LevelUp, which offers a trio of progressive discounts for returning customers. You can unlock the GPS-identified level 2 or 3 deals by purchasing the original offer. The company recently raised $15 million in financing from Google Ventures and Highland Capital.
Digital ad network RadiumOne has closed on a $21 million round of Series B funding round led by Crosslink Capital. The Bay Area-based start-up recently opened an office in the UK and will expand to continental Europe and Asia Pacific in the coming months. DFJ Esprit also participated in the round along with previous investors Adams Street Partners and Trinity Ventures, bringing RadiumOne’s total funding to $33.5 million.
Omnicom Group struck a deal with Yahoo to help educate brands about “”the power of digital storytelling” in creating more engaging online experiences. As part of a new deal, Yahoo will appoint a Creative Ambassador to brief Omnicom’s agencies and clients on its newest products and technologies. Yahoo! will also provide access to Yahoo! Web Analytics as part of a data exchange.
A new eBook titled The Goodness Engine: Driving Greater Social Impact in the Digital World was released by interactive marketing agency Deep Focus as a free resource to help non-profits and for-profit companies raise funds online for socially responsible causes. The tactical guide, the result of a collaborative “hackathon,” is sponsored by Bing, DonorsChoose.org and Hotmail.
Wal-Mart announced a plan to allow shoppers to order items online then pick them up at their local store within a few hours. The program, expected to be available nationwide by June, will send an email or text message to shoppers when their order is ready.
Online content delivery platform Outbrain, whose U.S. clients include Conde Nast, USA Today and Slate, announced its expansion into the UK market.
Microsoft’s Bing search engine gained by another 4% market share in Feb., according to Experian Hitwise. Google accounted for 66.69% of all U.S. searches for the four weeks ending Feb. 26, 2011, while Bing, including searches powered on the Yahoo portal, was responsible for 28.48% of searches for the month, it’s best showing yet.
The elephant in the room of the traditional TV model, the DVR, continues to get more play. Timeshifting by U.S. TV audiences increased significantly in the third and fourth quarters of 2010 according to Nielsen, with the average American watching nearly 10.5 hours of timeshifted TV at the end of the year. The biggest year-over-year increase was during Q3, when timeshifting increased 17.9% over the same period in 2009, compared to 13.4% in the fourth quarter.

Reviews are mostly positive for Apple’s iPad2, due out in stores today at 5 pm (1 am PT online.) The biggest difference is the case itself – 15% lighter and 33% thinner than its predecessor. SXSW goers will be able to buy one in a temporary pop-up store in downtown Austin, according to an Austin American-Statesman report. The company released 14 new video tours of the tablet to stoke the lust.
IM and social networking aggregation service Meebo has added a new “check-in” feature to its iPhone app, allowing users to click on links or scan QR codes to accomplish the feat. The updated app will also incorporate a real-time feed incorporating Meebo, Facebook and Twitter accountsallowing users to find and check in on content their friends are sharing.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment unveiled the new My Daily Clip app for iOS users, selecting a different movie clip from the Sony catalog to feature, along with trivia questions and a searchable clip database.
Photo sharing iPhone app Instagr.am are now able to view behind-the-scenes photography from the set of CBS‘ NCIS: Los Angeles, shot by the cast and producers. Users will be encouraged to share their favorite hometown photos of unique or iconic locales in their city, with an opportunity for their photo to be featured in the series’ season finale.
Troubled wireless broadband provider Clearwire announced a major shakeup, naming Chairman (and former VoiceStream Wireless CEO) John Stanton as interim CEO, replacing Bill Morrow who is leaving for “personal reasons.” Current CFO Erik Prusch has also been promoted to the newly created COO spot. Treasurer Hope Cochran will assume Erik’s former role as Chief Financial Officer.
Social gamer RockYou hired industry veteran Julie Shumaker to serve as SVP/GM of Media, reporting to COO Lisa Marino.
Media Rights Capital has promoted Liz Jenkins to VP/Corporate Development, overseeing MRC’s greenlight and sales strategies across television and film platforms. She will also shepherd the joint distribution venture between MRC and Universal.
Dan Drescher, formerly of Video Egg and ScanScout, was tapped by Evolve Media Corp. to head the new SpringBoard Video division as VP/Sales.
Abby Gardner has joined Hearst Magazines Digital Media’s MarieClaire.com as Site Director. She was formerly beauty editor of Glo.com.
Ninety million member-strong professional-themed social network LinkedIn unveiled a social news aggregation service named LinkedIn Today, connecting users from similar industries to shared stories. The idea is that you’ll be directed to stories that matter within your business, as determined by insiders themselves, rather than fourth estaters. Industry news categories such as Online Media and Internet can be customized on the home page and stories are selected based on how many people shared them via LinkedIn or tweeted them via Twitter. Stories found on the site can easily be shared or saved to read on the new LinkedIn Today iPhone app. (Another interesting feature of the iPhone app is the ability to see what your connections are reading.) There are 22 industries being covered at launch, with an understandable slant toward the computer and tech space.
