Good morning. It’s Friday, June 9, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.


The role of Tracy Turnblad in the movie version of the Broadway musical Hairspray will be played by … drum roll … Nicole Blonsky (17) of Great Neck, NY.  New Line has set the release for the picture, which will also star John Travolta and Queen Latifa, for summer 2007.  The Broadway show is of course based on the original movie that was written by John Waters and starred Divine.

Marblemedia, in tandem with Teletoon, is currently developing The Dating Guy, a new animated TV series.  Targeted to teens 16+/young adults, the series will follow the amusing if not strange dating adventures of a 20-something.  The Dating Guy is being co-written and developed by Jeremy Winkels and writing team of Lienne Sawatsky and Daniel Williams and C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures  Toons (Anaconda, The Save-Ums, Disney’s The Wild) will produce the animation.

In other teens/adults targeted animation news, MTV Networks UK & Ireland’s MTV2 has teamed with Aardman Animations to air The Adventures of Big Jeff, a series of animated shorts.  There are 10 Big Jeff short films, which range from 90 – 180 seconds long and will begin airing across MTV2’s schedule from mid June.  The Adventures of Big Jeff revolves around, well, Big Jeff, a back-to-basics macho Australian guy who is a sometime-TV host and good natured guy who likes his beer, and is fond of his cork hat and disco roller boots and his favorite phrase is “bloody marvelous.”  There are some other character traits and stories that sound really funny – but again, things for a young adult and up audience.  Big Jeff was created/written/directed by Aardman’s Tom Parkinson and executive produced by Miles Bullough, Pete Lord and Dave Sproxton.


Library Video Company and Educate Products, LLC have entered into a multiyear distribution partnership for the PBS kid’s series Reading Rainbow to schools and libraries across the country.  Under the agreement, Library Video Company will distribute the full Reading Rainbow library, including 148 existing episodes and five new episodes, which will air on PBS fall 2006.  Safari Montage, Library Video Company’s digital video-on-demand service for schools/school districts, will have exclusive digital distribution of Reading Rainbow.  Library Video Company will release the series on DVD/VHS.

Nickelodeon UK has inked a rights deal with Monster Distributes for the animated series I’m An Animal (52 x 2 min) from Brown Bag Films.  I’m An Animal is produced with support from RTE and the Irish Film Board.  The series has also been picked-up by RAI (Italy), TV Ontario, Knowledge Network (Canada), Cartoon Network Australia, Cable TV Hong Kong, Sanctuary (UK), Hungama TV (Indonesia, Malaysia and India), and Al Sayyar (Middle East).

Funimation Entertainment has sealed a deal with Verizon for distribution of the Funimation Channel, the 24/7 digital channel, as part of Verizon’s FiOS TV service.  The Funimation Channel, which features anime programming, will join the FiOS TV Premier package lineup this summer.  The channel is distributed by OlympuSAT in the US.


Transformers fans will be flocking to the new official Transformers movie site set up by DreamWorks. ( The site includes some artwork and has a countdown to when the first trailer for the movie will be released.  Directed by Michael Bay, the live action version of Transformers is set for release on July 4, 2007.

This week marks the debut of Mattel’s Hot Wheels R/C, the first time in its 38-year history that the brand has included radio controlled vehicles in the line.  This year Hot Wheels R/C will offer three lines of radio controlled cars: Pro Power Series-the first vehicle is the Fury FTX  a multi-terrain buggy; classic vehicles  features the cars we see on the street daily as well as concept cars and monster Jam trucks; and finally Hot Wheels custom vehicles  this includes the Hot Wheels Pimp My Ride cars based on the MTV show, and Hot Wheels Dropstars.

Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. has expanded its partnership with PlayFirst, Inc., a publisher of casual games, to include additional titles for mobile including Pirate Poppers and Professor Fizzwizzle.  Based on the PC versions of the games, the two mobile adaptations are expected to debut on for mobile platforms in 2007.  Under the terms of the deal, Konami will manage the mobile publishing and distribution of the two PlayFirst titles.  Pirate Poppers, was developed by Mystery Studio, and Professor Fizzwizzle was developed by Grubby Games.

Disney Internet Group debuts its Muppets Dance Party mobile game in the UK this month.  The game has five different environments, unlockable levels and the characters provide performance ratings and player feedback.  Targeted to families, Muppets Dance Party features characters from the Muppet Show, including the familiar banter between characters like Waldorf and Statler.  Muppets Dance Party will be available on and on mobile carriers including 02, Orange and T-Mobile.


Casting Call: They’re back!  Menudo Entertainment LLC has joined up with Yahoo! for a new global talent search titled Mvasion.  Yahoo! Telemundo will host the official Menudo website (, which will give Menudo applicants English- and Spanish-language access to live audition schedules in the US and Latin America, mall tours, registration and voting procedures.  The new group of boys ages 14-18 will record urban/Latin music in both languages.  The first audition will be held in NYC on October 14.  And a la American Idol, the final contestants will be featured on televised event where celebrity judges and voters at home will help determine the new members of Menudo.  Did you know that the original Menudo group recorded 35 albums and sold over 40 million records globally?

YouthNoise has raised $2.5 million in funding from a consortium of the Omidyar Network, the Surdna Foundation, Skyline Public Works and Virgin Mobile USA.  YouthNoise is a non-profit social network that encourages teens/young adults 16-22 to get involved in creating social change.  According to YouthNoise it has 113,000+ registered users from the US and 170+ other countries.  (
