Cynopsis: Kids!

6/08/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, June 8, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Liberty Global’s Chellomedia has acquired the remaining 50% of the Minimax, the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEE) K2-12 targeted TV channel, for an undisclosed amount, per Broadband TV News.  Three years ago Chellomedia purchased 50% of Minimax, which will now live as part of Chellomedia Central Europe’s TV unit that also features two sports channels and a joint venture with MGM.

The UK’s IPTV platform Tiscali TV has signed an agreement with Disney Channel to carry Disney Channel, Playhouse Disney, and Disney Cinemagic.  The first two channels will be part of the platform’s Kids Pack while Disney Cinemagic will be a stand-alone subscription-based channel.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney Channel has picked up Imagination Movers, a new series starring the New Orleans rock group of the same name, for its Playhouse Disney programming block.  Slated to begin production in New Orleans this October 2007, the series revolves around the five members of Imagination Movers as they work together to solve problems through skits, songs and stories, and encourage viewers to use their problem-solving skills too.  This October Disney Records plans to release Juicebox Heroes, a collection of Imagination Movers songs from its previous albums, which will be followed with a new release featuring new original songs in 2008.  The group also continues on its ongoing US concert tour.

MORE KIDS STUFF

In London today, Penguin UK is unveiling plans to launch spinebreakers.co.uk, a teen-targeted and teen run online book community in September 2007.  Spinebreakers.co.uk will be overseen by an editorial team, comprised of nine teenagers 13-18 year-olds with other teens around the UK serving as contributing editors.  The teenage editors will begin their work developing what they want the site to be this July with a month-long internship at the youth marketing agency Livity.  Penguin has partnered with Livity to create the spinebreakers site, which will feature a range of multi-media content including video and audio reviews, alternative book jackets and book endings, soundtracks, author interviews, podcasts, blogs, short stores and so on.  Penguin is greatly invested in this concept both financially and as a way for the publishing industry to reach teens and get them excited about books and reading.  According to a recently release Penguin survey about UK teen reading habits:

  • Three in four teens get their information on books from the internet and wished there was more information on books available to them on the internet.
  • Upwards of 44% of surveyed teens never or rarely visit a chain bookstore and 68% never or rarely visit an independent bookshop.
  • 69% of teens think they will be doing more reading online in the future.
  • Teens who rate reading as cool are the most frequent visitors to social networking sites.

The NCTA and Cable in the Classroom launched a new website to educate families on safe Internet usage. PointSmartClickSafe.org utilizes a Flash interface to brief parents and kids on topical issues such as cyberbullying, copyright infringement, filtering software and “netiquette.” Cable operators and programming networks are expected to add links to the site from their consumer web sites.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Pokemon USA opens a Pokemon boutique at Toys R Us Times Square in NYC this week, which will remain open through July 5.  The special area will feature a range of Pokemon products (e.g. action figures, plush, backpacks, T-shirts).  The boutique will also feature products that aren’t yet available elsewhere, such as the new Pokemon Trading Card Game: Diamond & Pearl 3-Pack booster, which will go on sale at the store from June 15, a week early.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has inked a licensing deal with Crocs, inc. and Jibbitz, LLC to manufacture footwear and shoe charms (you know those accessories kids put on their Crocs) based on Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera and Scooby-Doo.  The new Crocs will feature Warner Bros. characters including Bugs Bunny, Tweety, The Flintstones, The Jetsons and so on.  Earlier this year Crocs and Jibbitz were awarded the license to produce merchandise based on DC Comics’ characters Batman and Superman.  Crocs, Inc. acquired Jibbitz, LLC in 2006.

Remember the TV series Voyagers, which ran on NBC 1982-83?  Universal Studios Home Entertainment is set to release all 20 episodes of the cult classic on DVD for the first time, on July 17, 2007.  The series followed the time-traveling adventures of Phineas Bogg (played by the late Jon-Erik Hexum) as he makes his way through time in an effort to keep history on track.  Along the way he gains an unexpected companion a 12-year-old boy (played by Meeno Peluce), who coincidentally knows lots of history. The show was release on VHS about five years back.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Canada’s Lenz Entertainment named Joan Lambur as President/On-Screen Entertainment.  She will manage the entertainment divisions, including international TV distribution, television and film acquisitions, licensing and merchandising and brand development.  Her initial focus will be on launching a merchandising program for Lenz’s preschool program, Nanalan’, and launching a new primetime puppet series, Swami Jeff’s Temple of Wisdom, and design/real estate series Mansions.  She was recently President, Lambur & Associates in addition to previously heading up the On-Screen divisions of NY-based The itsy bitsy Entertainment Company.

Todd Merker joins Educational Adventures as Sr. Global Licensing Director.  Merker will manage the expansion of the company’s Danger Ranger property across all licensing categories.  A 15-year veteran of the licensing industry, Merker has licensed brands including Coca-Cola, SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, John Deere, Chevrolet, Ford and Big Wheels.
