Good morning. It’s Friday, June 29, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Canada’s Rainmaker Entertainment enters into a deal to sell its animation studio, Rainmaker Studios, to Beijing-based digital animation house Xing Xing Digital. The move follows Rainmaker’s announcement that its President and Executive Producer, Catherine Winder will exit the company effective June 30, 2012 in order to pursue other business opportunities. The agreement sees Xing Xing Digital takes on the assumption of $7 million in Rainmaker debt and all real property leases. The Transaction is conditional upon, among other things, the approval of Rainmaker’s shareholders and the receipt of the required regulatory approvals, including any approvals required under the Investment Canada Act. Rainmaker’s board of directors has already given its unanimous approval for the asset purchase agreement and is recommending its shareholders to approve the transaction the shareholder meeting is scheduled for July 31, 2012. Rainmaker Studio is currently in production on its first feature film, Escape from Planet Earth, which will be distributed by The Weinstein Company in February 2013. It is also producing several DVD films for Mattel and developing its own properties.
TV and technology industry veterans Alex Kay, Scott Webb and Tinsley Galyean announce the launch PlaySquare (www.playsquare.tv), a new company that will develop tablet-based Touchable Television, the next generation of kid’s media focused on touchscreen technology – which is intuitive to kids. PlaySquare’s Touchable Television aims to transform TV from a passive viewing experience into an active one in which kids are watching, thinking and doing via a seamless combination of existing TV episodes with interactive content that allows a kid to participate in the story of a TV property. PlaySquare has developed a proprietary technology and interface design that allows it to take existing video libraries and convert them into touchable, interactive experiences for the iPad based on a production platform and toolset that is quick, efficient and at a low predictable cost. PlaySquare will license properties and convert them into interactive episodes. For its first licensing deal PlaySquare has partnered with the literacy-centric TV property WordWorld for an app that will release on iTunes on June 29. The WordWorld PlaySquare episode is free of charge for a limited time. WordWorld airs daily on PBS Kids and in 90+ countries worldwide. Furthermore, PlaySquare has signed an agreement with another kid’s media veteran Tina Peel to serve as Advisor and Executive Producer.
