Cynopsis: Kids!
06/24/11
Good morning. It’s Friday, June 24, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
J.K. Rowling unveiled her new digital Potter project Pottermore.com ( www.pottermore.com ), a new free Harry Potter book series-centric interactive website, at a press conference in London and an announcement on YouTube and Sony.com yesterday. Set to launch in October 2011, the Pottermore site, developed in partnership with Sony, will feature Rowling’s newly written material about the series characters, locations and objects, and will exclusively offer the anticipated Harry Potter eBooks (various languages), in partnership with the series’ publishers worldwide including Bloomsbury and Scholastic, at its retail shop. Prior to this the book series has been available in print and as audio books. Launching in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish, with other languages to follow, Pottermore will also feature new illustrations and interactive ‘moments’, which will let fans navigate the Potter series, beginning with the first book, including reading Rowling’s new material and take part in the story too, such as visiting Diagon Alley, getting sorted into a house, get a wand, and cast spells and mix potions. Some of the new material includes Rowling’s descriptions of how she brought to life both the Sorting Hat and Ollivanders experiences from her books for the first time, by revealing the questions asked by the Sorting Hat, and the magic behind the Wand Chooser. The creative on Pottermore was led by UK-based digital agency TH_NK, under the supervision of Rowling and the Pottermore management team, in cooperation with Sony. Partners supporting Pottermore.com include publishers Bloomsbury (UK), Scholastic (US), as well as others, and film partner Warner Bros. So, what can fans do now? Well, they can go to Pottermore.com now and submit their email address to be contacted by the site upon the opening of registration on July 31 (the date anyone? Harry’s birthday), when an online challenge will launch offering the first one million people to complete their registration will gain early access to the website, and help with the final details. Oh and in case you have been under a spell, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the eighth and final film in the series, releases next month on July 15.
As a partner in Pottermore.com, Scholastic says it will provide marketing and promotional support for the site and connect teachers and parents from its school and online channels directly to eBook sales. The publisher, which will receive a royalty on sales of the US editions of the eBooks, notes that Pottermore.com and Rowling’s new content featured on the site will ignite more interest in the book series and draw another generation of readers to Harry Potter.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
CCI Entertainment inks a deal with The Juno Company to produce a new music education-based TV series inspired by the Juno franchise. The Juno Company is a kid-focused digital media company that creates music education-based products for babies to preschoolers, including apps, games, DVDs, CDs and books.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Next month G4 will premiere two new original Marvel Anime series, Iron Man and Wolverine, which will air exclusively on the network. Iron Man, featuring Adrian Pasdar (Heroes, Castle, Profit) as the voice of Tony Stark, will debut on Friday July 29 at 11p, followed by Wolverine, with Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes, Gilmore Girls, Rocky Balboa) voice Wolverine, at 11:30p, where they will air weekly. Two other new Marvel Anime series, X-Men and Blade, are scheduled to launch on exclusively on G4 later this year. These anime series are not specifically aimed at the kid audience, but I suspect that kids and tweens will find them. The four new Marvel anime series are produced by Madhouse for Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan. Sony Pictures Television serves as the distributor.
Avrill Stark Entertainment and Flying Bark Productions announce the kid/family-targeted animated film Santa’s Apprentice will get its Australian theatrical release later this year. Based on an original idea, characters and designs created by Jan Van Rijsselberge, Santa’s Apprentice revolves around the adventure of Nicolas, a 7-year-old Australian boy as he deals with the ups, downs and responsibility of being the next Santa Claus. The movie features the voice of Australia’s Shane Jacobsen, Magda Szubanski, Delta Goodrem and Hugh Sheridan. Santa’s Apprentice is a co-production between Gaumont-Alphanim and Avrill Stark Entertainment, with the participation of Gaumont, Cartoon Saloon and Flying Bark Productions, Orange Cinema Series, Centre National de la Cinematographie et de l’Image Animee, Bord Scannan na heireann/Irish Film Board. With the support of Departement de la Charente, de la Region Poitou-Charentes & la Region Ile-de-France. Developed with the support of The Media Programme of the European Union. Becker Entertainment distributes the movie, which debuted in France last year.
MARKETING/LICENSING
JetBlue Airways and PBS Kids team up to launch the joint Soar with Reading ( www.soarwithreading.com ) program, which aims to keep kids reading over the summer through literacy resources available in-flight and online, community reading events and a partnership with First Book. SoarwithReading.com offers parents/adults the opportunity to download a free reading activity kit, create a summer reading list featuring recommendations from Random House Children’s Books and log their kid’s reading time, among other activities. Kids traveling on JetBlue flights this summer will receive a free activity kit featuring reading games based on PBS Kids programming. The campaign, which features PBS Kids animated host Hooper, also encourages kids to learn about the world around them through imaginative travel, reading books and playing learning games on its website at home or at their local public library. For every reader who registers on SoarwithReading.com, JetBlue will make a book donation to a child via First Book, up to 10,000 books.
Geronimo Stilton gets a new video game. Geronimo Stilton The Kingdom of Fantasy: The Video Game will release exclusively for PSP (PlayStation Portable) in Spain and other European markets at the end of 2011. Produced in collaboration with Atlantyca Entertainment, which owns Geronimo Stilton, and Sony Computer Entertainment Espana, the Geronimo Stilton The Kingdom of Fantasy game is being developed by Spain’s Virtual Toys.
STONE SOUP
Talent Search: Kidz Bop launches its second annual Kid Star USA Talent Search ( www.kidzbop.com/kidzstarusa) for kids/tweens 15-year-old and younger. Now through August 15, 2011, kids (remember under 15) can upload a 90-second performance video to KidzBop.com to compete for a chance at a recording contract with RCA/Jive Label Group, and other things. Endemol is producing webisodes following the Kidz Star USA contestants. Like last year, a panel of celebrity judges (TBA), will mentor contestants and select winners. Kids will also get their chance to voice their opinion by voting online for the semi-finalists and big winner.

Friday Fun Fact: The most common street name in the U.S. is Second Street. This is followed by Park Street and Third Street. Main Street doesn’t even make the top ten.
Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia: Everyone knows the Hawaiian Punch guy – and if you’ve every wondered (as I have), that is supposed to be a grass hat on his head. In any case, in each commercial he asked a much bigger guy, How about a nice Hawaiian Punch? The guy said Sure! and the little guy let ‘er rip. So the question is, what was the name of these two characters? PUNCHY & OAF Kudos to: Keith Manzella-Eastwest MG/NY
