Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, June 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Get your broomstick tuned up, because last week’s unconfirmed reports about a possible Harry Potter theme park are now fact.  Warner Bros. Entertainment and Universal Orlando Resort have inked a deal to create The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a theme park that will reside within Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park in Orlando, Florida.  Expected to open in late 2009, the attraction, based on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter characters, books and movies, will feature an all Potter experience including the village of Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and Hogwarts castle and themed rides and restaurants.  According to the press information, Warner Bros. and Universal are clear that Potter fans are a particular bunch and will expect accuracy to lore and details, and to that end the two plan to pay close attention, which includes the participation of Stuart Craig, the production designer for all of the HP movies so far, who is leading the creative designs for the HP area.

Nickelodeon has teamed with Marriott International and Miller Global Properties, a real estate investor/developer, to create Nickelodeon Resorts by Marriott, a series of branded resort hotels for families and others.  The first hotel under the partnership is scheduled to open in San Diego in 2010, with 20 hotels slated to be underway by 2020.  Miller Global will hold certain exclusive rights to develop and own the resorts in specified locations and plans will invest an initial $300 million in an investment fund.   Marriott will manage all of the Nickelodeon Resorts by Marriott properties. The Nickelodeon-ified resorts will feature a range of attractions, including indoor water parks, themed restaurants, retailers, live entertainment programs showcasing Nick characters at Studio Nick, a performance space that can host several productions simultaneously, adult specific activities (e.g. spa treatments) and an event facility for groups of 300, which when empty will be home to Nick after Dark events.

National Geographic Kids Entertainment has inked a deal for the TV development rights to author Jerdine Nolen’s kid’s book Plantzilla.  Nolen and David Catrow, illustrator of Plantzilla and numerous other kid’s books (and political cartoons), have teamed with writer Mark Drop and NG to adapt the book into an animated series for K6-11.  Plantzilla revolves around the adventures of third grader Mortimer Henryson and his best friend Plantzilla, the classroom plant.

Nickelodeon is set to launch first series of animated Mini-Shows, which will run as interstitial programming beginning June 23, 2007.  Each of the Mini-Shows will include various Neopets characters, key plot elements/twists from the Neopia realm, as well as featuring multiple endings and clues that will unlock puzzles and questions on Neopets site.
In other Neopets news:

  • Neovision, launches this week, a broadband video player that showcases Neopets-themed user submitted content and the new animated Mini-Shows
  • New pet customization features including new clothing and accessories.
  • A new website layout that is easier to navigation, improved graphics, a new Games Room and a home page that displays messaging from the users Neopets.
  • The Neopets second annual Altador Cup launches today.  The global gaming event runs throughout June.

Justice League Unlimited, the 30-minute animated series, will bow on Boomerang beginning this Sunday, June 3 at 11p, during the network’s Boomeraction block.  The series will Sunday-Saturday at 11p.  Based on the DC Comics characters, Justice League Unlimited, which ran on Cartoon Network 2004-06, is a spin-off of another of the networks’ series Justice League (2001-4).  Along with the well-known team members including the Flash, Green Lantern, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl, the Justice League welcomes Supergirl, Green Arrow and Captain Atom as well as some lesser-known superheroes like Booster Gold, Hawk & Dove and B’wana Beast, The Atom and Zatanna.

Australia’s ABC Kids has acquired 9 Story Entertainment‘s Best Ed (52×11′).  The video distribution rights for the 2-D animated series have also been granted to Australia’s Madman Entertainment.  Currently in production, the series is expected to debut in the beginning of 2008 and.  Canada’s Teletoon and Cartoon Network UK originally commissioned the series.

I am Eloise.  I am six.  I am a city child.  I live at the Plaza.
The HandMade Group, a rights/production/merchandising and licensing company, has named DIC Entertainment as the exclusive worldwide licensing agent for the classic property Eloise, created by author Kay Thompson and illustrator Hilary Knight.  DIC will develop a licensing and merchandising program for Eloise, for girls 4-8 yrs, across categories including toys, books, apparel and accessories and so on, but excluding entertainment.  The initial Eloise merchandise is slated to rollout in spring 2008, which will coincide with the release of HandMade’s new live-action feature film, Eloise in Paris in 2008.  Additionally, a Broadway show is in development.  HandMade produced two Eloise TV movies, Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime, and with Film Roman the Eloise animated TV series.

The Sorpresa Network is sponsoring the second annual Monchi Bonche, a live kid’s production that will visit 22 summer camps across Puerto Rico beginning June 4, 2007 and running through June 29.  Designed to entertain and educate kids about wildlife and the environment, the tour features appearances by Sorpresa’s star, Emanuel, host of Tienda Magica and Gana con Emanuel, and live exotic animals, games and the like.  In Puerto Rico, Sorpresa is available on OneLink Communications Canal 135 and Choice Cable Canal 182.

The first meeting of the National Task Force on Children’s Safety will take place on Capitol Hill in Washington DC on Tuesday, June 5.  Founded by the Creative Coalition and producers Safety4Kids, US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi serves as the Honorary Chair of the National Task Force.  At this inaugural meeting the discussion will focus on issues related to kid’s safety, specifically on the internet.  Others attending the meeting include a bipartisan group of Congressional leaders as well as leaders from a range of organizations and corporations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, National PTA, Cable in the Classroom, Microsoft, CPB, PBS, Christian coalition of America, International Society for Technology in Education, Time Warner, American University and Tufts University.  The mission of the National Task Force on Children’s Safety is to advocate for younger kids and identify the next steps towards putting media literacy and internet safety at the top of list of parents, educators and legislators.
