Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, June 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Get your broomstick tuned up, because last week’s unconfirmed reports about a possible Harry Potter theme park are now fact. Warner Bros. Entertainment and Universal Orlando Resort have inked a deal to create The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, a theme park that will reside within Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park in Orlando, Florida. Expected to open in late 2009, the attraction, based on J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter characters, books and movies, will feature an all Potter experience including the village of Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and Hogwarts castle and themed rides and restaurants. According to the press information, Warner Bros. and Universal are clear that Potter fans are a particular bunch and will expect accuracy to lore and details, and to that end the two plan to pay close attention, which includes the participation of Stuart Craig, the production designer for all of the HP movies so far, who is leading the creative designs for the HP area.
Nickelodeon has teamed with Marriott International and Miller Global Properties, a real estate investor/developer, to create Nickelodeon Resorts by Marriott, a series of branded resort hotels for families and others. The first hotel under the partnership is scheduled to open in San Diego in 2010, with 20 hotels slated to be underway by 2020. Miller Global will hold certain exclusive rights to develop and own the resorts in specified locations and plans will invest an initial $300 million in an investment fund. Marriott will manage all of the Nickelodeon Resorts by Marriott properties. The Nickelodeon-ified resorts will feature a range of attractions, including indoor water parks, themed restaurants, retailers, live entertainment programs showcasing Nick characters at Studio Nick, a performance space that can host several productions simultaneously, adult specific activities (e.g. spa treatments) and an event facility for groups of 300, which when empty will be home to Nick after Dark events.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
National Geographic Kids Entertainment has inked a deal for the TV development rights to author Jerdine Nolen’s kid’s book Plantzilla. Nolen and David Catrow, illustrator of Plantzilla and numerous other kid’s books (and political cartoons), have teamed with writer Mark Drop and NG to adapt the book into an animated series for K6-11. Plantzilla revolves around the adventures of third grader Mortimer Henryson and his best friend Plantzilla, the classroom plant.
