Cynopsis: DIGITAL

6/01/07

Good Morning, it’s Friday, June 1, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

RealNetworks will release a newly revamped video player next month to allow users to download online videos from other sites such as YouTube and burn them to DVDs and CDs. The new RealPlayer will support Flash, Quicktime, Windows Media and, of course, Real formats and allow users to share video links with friends. Real is saying it will only work with non-DRM content and record ads along with the video, but the move still seems destined to draw fire from major distributors.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

EMI signed a licensing deal with YouTube to make music videos and audio recording available for free on the video-sharing site. EMI had been the one holdout among the major music labels to give YouTube access to its artists’ works. The company is now apparently satisfied with the Google-owned company’s content identification tools and reporting system for tracking usage.

NATAS announced the nominees for the four new broadband entertainment programming categories – comedy, drama, children’s and variety – created specifically for digital devices. MySpace was a partner this year, allowing users submit entries through the social networking portal.  Vuguru’s Prom Queen and Sam Has 7 Friends are up for “best drama,” while Comedy Central’s Baxter & McGuire and Honesty are among those vying for “best comedy.” Winners will be announced at the Daytime Emmy Awards on June 14.

Arby’s and NBC Universal have produced a 30-minute collection of outtakes from NBC comedies including 30 Rock, The Office and Saturday Night Live, airing daily from 12n-2p ET.  Lunchbreakshow.com also includes late-night monologues, comedy shorts, Web-exclusive videos and clips from classic sitcoms and stand-up acts. The mashup can also be seen at dotcomedy.com.

MTV is resurrecting Unplugged as a multi-network, multiplatform show. The new incarnation will be customized for MTV, VH1, CMT and their prospective websites beginning with a Jon Bon Jovi acoustic performance of his newest album Lost Highway, beginning June 22. The artist is aptly chosen; Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were believed to have inspired Unplugged initially with an acoustic performance at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards.

Verizon launched a new broadband site called Action Hero that allows users to create their own animated action/sci fi shorts or search for films made by friends by entering their email address. Also new from the telco is VerizonSurround, a video content portal organized by genre that includes a partnership with RealNetworks’ Rhapsody music service. Some subscriber-only content will be added to the site this summer.

YouTube signed a deal with Major League Soccer to launch a channel featuring action clips, interviews, player blogs and user generated mashups. Other YouTube sports partners include NHL, MLB and the National Lacrosse League.

AOL Latino launched a social networking service targeted at bilingual Hispanics, built on the Latino AIM Pages platform. Roselyn Sanchez, star of the upcoming movie Yellow, will help promote the service with a new microsite featuring trailers, behind-the-scenes footage and a blog.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Mahalo launched its alpha service, a web search start-up that has hired a team of real people to manually write relevant search engine result pages to try and cut down on “search spam.” Like Wikipedia, the site will also accept additions and edits from readers. Web surfers may thank them, the company moniker implies; Maholo means “thank you” in Hawaiian.

Google acquired photo-sharing site called Panoramio that enables users to upload photos and reveal where they were taken via Google Earth or Google Maps. Google has been working with the company since beginning of the year to enable these features on the site, which now has over 1 million “geo-located” photos.

Find Internet TV launched a new programming grid to track what’s airing live on the internet. Users can choose to search by network, programming genre or time. There are not a whole lot of networks/distributors on the grid yet, but it’s a start.

Stage 3 Media‘s ambitious Sanctuary series was named “Highest Budget for a Direct-to-Web Broadcast” by the Guinness World Record folks. The budget for eight 15-minute episodes totaled $4.5 million.

Video search engine Blinkx announced it has indexed over 12 million hours of audio, video, viral and TV content.

In anticipation of the Red Sox‘s weekend series with the Yankees, Boston’s WBZ.com is launching a Rivalry Webcast this morning at 12:15 pm ET including commentary, viewer email and opinion polls. The CBS news radio website has an extensive archive of audio and video podcasts, giving the Red Sox nation another online resource.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The Associated Press will step up efforts to protect copyrights on the web, subscribing to a service from Attributor Corp. to follow how stories are being distributed across the web. The service will eventually expand to include fingerprinting of photos and videos. Attributor, founded in 2005 by former Yahoo! executive Jim Brock and former Moreover CEO Jim Pitkow, has indexed more than 13 billion web pages so far.

Google introduced Google Gears, an open source browser extension for Windows & Mac versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer that will provide offline functionality to applications built for the browsers. The first “gear-enabled” application is Google Reader, which will grab RSS feeds while online and allow users to access them offline. Google also released a new Mashup Editor to compete with Microsoft’s Popfly and Yahoo Pipes.

Groups representing online radio broadcasters filed preliminary paperwork in the D.C. Circuit Court to appeal the ruling by the Copyright Royalty Board that would effectively double royalty rates paid to record labels. Services such as Live365.com, Pandora, and NPR affiliate KCRW in Santa Monica have been organizing a grass roots campaign to pressure legislators to act.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Oxygen
became the first TV network to agree to participate in eBay’s Online Media Exchange system, an auction system for buying and selling commercial ad time. The exchange has been languishing since the Cable Advertising Bureau publicly rejected the plan, despite interest from major advertisers including Home Depot, HP, Microsoft and Toyota.

The American Association of Advertising Agencies and the Association of National Advertisers sent a joint letter to the FTC asking the commission to carefully consider the ramifications of such mergers as Google/DoubleClick. The Internet Advertising Bureau chose not to participate.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Nielsen launched its commercial ratings service in time to make it part of upfront deals currently being negotiated. Data will be backdated to April 30 covering live, live plus same day and live plus 1, 2, 3, or 7 day viewing for DVR customers. Nielsen estimates about 17% of households currently have DVRs. Within these homes, 58% of broadcast primetime viewing still takes place live, with 42% occurring through DVR playback. NBC’s The Office had the highest percentage of viewers watching its commercials when live+3 data was included.

The global broadband subscriber base will double to 567 million by 2011, according to market research firm In-Stat. Approximately 65 million new subs have been added in the last 12 months alone, a vast majority via cable or DSL connections. In-Stat predicts DSL will be the dominant method of connecting, accounting for 58% of the world’s broadband subscribers by 2011.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Yahoo Chief Technology Officer Farzad Nazem says he will leave the company after June 8, leaving the second of the company’s top three operating positions vacant.

Former Cisco executive and Skype board member Mike Volpi is in line to become the next Joost CEO, according to paidcontent.org. Fredrik de Wahl, former CEO of peer-to-peer technology provider Joltid, has served as CEO of the video streaming start-up since its beta launch.

President of U.S. Operations for ValueClick Tom Vadnais was named CEO of the company, succeeding James Zarley, who has been promoted to Executive Chairman. Tom will get more involved evaluating takeover candidates for the internet advertising company. James will continue to manage ValueClick’s media and international businesses until a buyer is found.

Former CNN, MSNBC and ABC anchor (and current spouse of Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger) Willow Bay was hired as Editor-at-Large to oversee the new Living Now lifestyle section of the newly-revamped Huffington Post.

Web classified ad solution provider Adicio created three new positions to support each of the company’s verticals. Travis Fisher has been appointed to GM/Careers. Deep Menon was named GM/Motors. Lee Itzhaki was hired as GM/Real Estate.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The Wall Street Journal has done an admirable job covering their AllThingsDigital conference on the web, with a dedicated site non-journal subscribers can access. Check out the Brightcove-served video coverage of the rare joint appearance by Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. The two pioneers seem to share genuine affection for one another as they walk down memory lane talking about earlier collaborations and current rivalries. One of the most memorable bits is when Jobs tries to convince Gates that the PC guy in the Mac commercials is the real hero of the campaign!

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange, but all have something to do with this crazy business. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
