Good Morning. It’s Friday, June 16, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
The cost of saying *&$@!# or doing anything remotely similar, just went up by about a gazillion percent. Yesterday President Bush made it official — the FCC now has the authority to levy fines of $325,000 per violation of the broadcast indecency rules. And how does the FCC define indecent? If “in context [it] depicts or describes sexual or excretory activities or organs in a patently offensive manner as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium.” As far as indecent speech – it has be when the little ones are in bed, determined by the FCC as after 10p and before 6a.
CBS has additional changes to its summer schedule. The network will premiere Rock Star: Supernova on July 5 at 8p in an expanded 90-minute telecast followed that night by a 90-minute CSI: Miami. NCIS and The Unit will now air on Fridays throughout the summer beginning July 7, at 8p and 9p respectively. On Mondays starting July 10, the comedy line-up will include two helpings of How I Met Your Mother, the first in its normal time period at 830p, and the second following Two and a Half Men at 930p.
ABC will air a show just days after it premieres on ABC Family. The Touchstone TV drama Kyle XY debuts on ABC Family on June 26 at 8p; and it will air on ABC on Fridays beginning June 30 at 9p for at least two weeks. The show is about a teenager, played by Matt Dallas, who seems to lack some of the standard human emotions including anger and joy, and the family that takes him in.
Weekends with Maury & Connie … no more. MSNBC will pull the plug following this Saturday evening’s 10p show. The show debuted last January.
The Cisneros family–controlled Venevision Investments LLC has decided to partner up with the bidding group of Grupo Televisa, Bain Capital, Blackstone Group, Carlyle Group, Cascade Investment and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. to make an offer for Univision Communications Inc. The privately held Venezuelan broadcaster and Televisa are Univision’s two leading shareholders.
AOL.com will debut Gold Rush from Mark Burnett Productions. Gold Rush is a multi-media, cross-platform treasure hunt for $2 million in gold on September 13 and the first clue will be broadcast September 14 on CBS. Contestants will complete in a series of pop culture challenges on AOL.com for a chance to be one of the real-life searchers for the hidden gold across America. Each round ends with someone uncovering $100,000 in gold, and the final week will see the participants vie for solid gold worth $1 million.
MyNetworkTV, the first all hi-def broadcast network set to launch on September 5, has added ten more affiliates, increasing its stable to 149 markets, representing 85% of the U.S. The new affiliates include:
KTFO/Tulsa
WNFM/Ft. Myers-Naples
KSCC/Wichita
XHRIO/Harlingen-McAllen-Brownsville
KKTV-DT/Colorado Springs-Pueblo
WYTV-DT/Youngstown
KEYT-DT/Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-San Luis Obispo
KOTR/Monterey-Salinas
KUVI/Bakersfield
KEBQ/Beaumont-Port Arthur
The Sportsman Channel (TSC), the 24/7 hunting and fishing network, has expanded distribution into Mexico and Russia. A recent partnership with Varivision de Baja California in Ensenada, Mexico will put the channel on Varivision’s Expanded Basic line-up and is the first of many expected launches in Mexico. TSC’s distribution deal with Sistema Telecom group will expose the network’s select hunting and fishing programming to more than 50 million customers in areas of the Russian Federation and territory of Former Soviet Republics. In the U.S., TSC currently has 13.4 million broadcast and cable households on a full and part-time basis.
NBC has its new ADA for Law & Order – Alana De La Garza will step in where former ADA Alexandra Borgia left off after she was killed in the season finale. If her name is familiar, you probably remember her from her recurring role on CSI: Miami where she played Eric Delko’s sister, Marisol.
Fox‘s new drama adventure pilot Drive about an illegal and underground across America road race, has added Ivan Sergei to star. Sergei’s co-stars include Kristin Lehman, Alan Ruck, Melanie Lynskey and Shahine Ezell. Sergei was most recently on Crossing Jordan and the WB’s defunct drama series Jack & Jill.
The CW has appointed Kim Fleary to the position of EVP/Comedy Development, reporting to Dawn Ostroff, President/Entertainment. Kim will supervise the development of all scripted comedies for the network. Most recently, she was at UPN as the SVP/Comedy Development since July 2002, where she developed the series Everybody Hates Chris and All of Us. Both series will be on The CW’s schedule this fall.
Perkins Miller is the new SVP/Digital Media at NBC Universal Sports & Olympics. He will be responsible for all digital media efforts for NBC Sports, NBC Olympics, as well as NBCSports.com and NBCOlympics.com. He will report to Gary Zenkel, President/NBC Olympics and EVP/Strategic Partnerships for NBC Sports.
Fox Networks Group has promoted Michael Lang to EVP/Business Development and Strategy, where he will now manage business development for FOX network, FOX Sports and 28 individual FOX Cable Networks, among other duties. He will report to Tony Vinciquerra, President/CEO at Fox Networks Group.
A&E Network has hired Scott Vila as VP/Original Drama Programming, reporting to Tana Nugent Jamieson, SVP/Drama Programming. Scott will manage the development and production of original scripted drama series for the network at the newly formed West Coast division.
RDF USA and Pangea Management Group has named Kirk Schenck as President/General Counsel, where he will oversee strategic planning, business, legal and commercial affairs for the scripted and reality projects at the two companies. Kirk will report to Chris Coelen, CEO/RDF USA and Pangea.
Grace WU has been made SVP/Casting for NBC Entertainment, and Steven O’Neill has been named VP/Casting of NBC Universal Television Studio. In other NBC casting department changes, Jennifer McNamara will become VP/Casting, NBC Entertainment in New York, while ABC Entertainment/Touchstone Television casting executive Brian Dorfman also joins NBC as VP/Casting, NBC Entertainment, in Burbank.
Microsoft Corp. announced yesterday that as of July 2008 its co-Founder Bill Gates will have completed his transition out of his day-to-day role in the company to focus more of his time and energies on the global health and education efforts at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. At the end of this transition period, which Microsoft says has been gradual and began several years ago, Gates will continue to serve as Microsoft’s Chairman and advisor on developing of key projects. Microsoft’s Chief Technical Officers Ray Ozzie and Craig Mudie have assumed new titles and expanded responsibilities. Ozzie has been named Chief Software Architect and will begin working side-by-side with Gates on all technical architecture and product oversight responsibilities. Mudie takes the new title of Chief Research and Strategy Officer and will also work closely with Gates; Mudie also will partner with General Counsel Brad Smith focusing on intellectual property and technology policy efforts. In 2000 Steve Ballmer was appointed as Microsoft’s CEO, taking over for Gates who had until then served as Chairman and CEO. Last year Ballmer organized the company into three divisions under presidents Jim Allchin, Kevin Johnson, Robbie Bach and Jeff Raikes, who took on greater responsibility for product development and strategy decisions within their respective businesses. In August 2005 the company named Kevin Turner as its COO.
