Cynopsis: Sports
06/10/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, June 10, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The UFC could soon raise its profile in the media game, and is talking with Comcast about buying majority interest in the G4 network. Parties for both sides met Wednesday to discuss a potential agreement. UFC’s deal with Spike TV, worth about $170 million a year, expires at the end of 2011, and already industry insiders are speculating that any agreement with Comcast could also potentially include an extension of UFC’s deal with Versus or even airtime on NBC. G4 is available in about 60 million homes. Reports of the deal originally surfaced late Wednesday, with The Wall Street Journal breaking the story. One well placed source, however, noted, “There are a lot of ways this could go, and nothing is confirmed. The UFC is talking to everybody and will do what’s best for them in the end.”

On the Air

The BBC is jumping into the 3D wave, announcing that it will broadcast the men’s and women’s singles finals at this year’s Wimbledon Championships in the format, marking the first time programs to be shown in 3D by the company. The broadcast will be available via the BBC’s HD Channel to anyone who has access to a 3D TV and HD channels will be able to watch the action. Coverage of the Championship Finals will also be available in Standard Definition on BBC One and in High Definition on BBC One HD.

Tiger may be gone, but ESPN is celebrating its 30th year of covering the U.S. Open this month with a programming push throughout its platforms. The company will offer 44 hours of programming from June 14-20 on television as well as expansive analysis, news and information on radio, online and mobile devices. ESPN and ESPN3.com will air seven hours of live coverage of each of the first two rounds of the tournament on June 16-17, beginning at 10a, while SportsCenter will originate from the tournament site with special programs for six consecutive days beginning Tuesday, June 14.Chris Berman will once again host the action. Features during the week will include:

  • ESPN Sport Science on “The Rough” at the U.S. Open.
  • “Digital Drive,” hosted by Rick Reilly which will be produced each day Tuesday-Sunday of the tournament.
  • ESPN.com GolfCast application featuring live scoring and CoverItLive analysis daily with ESPN’s golf team.
  • A golf-themed fantasy game  the second installment of the ESPN Best Ball Challenge

CBS Sports Network is officially entering the NBA draft, and will cover the annual event with a series of three one-hour shows previewing the selections from both the professional and college perspectives. The shows, entitled Inside College Basketball: Draft Special, and are set to begin Monday at 8p. Adam Zucker is on deck to host and will be joined by CBS Sports Network analysts Steve Lappas, Wally Szczerbiak and Alaa Abdelnaby.

With the NFL rookie symposium cancelled, the NFL Players Association will be hosting its own life lessons for rookies via the “Business of Football: Rookie Edition” seminar set for June 28-29, 2011 at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla. The event is only open to players who were drafted during the April 2011 NFL Draft and will focus on “financial planning, media and other subjects to prepare rookies for their professional football careers.” Participating rookies in the “Business of Football” seminar will hear from industry experts including IMG performance experts, and will have access to IMG’s facilities and staff resources for the duration of their stay (assuming they aren’t taped to the goal posts by veteran pranksters).

Weekend highlights (other than NBA, NHL and Belmont):
Fox has selected Cubs @ Phillies to be its primary game on Saturday for the Fox Saturday Baseball Game of the Week, beginning at 4p. The matchup will feature Kenny Albert, Tim McCarver and Ken Rosenthal behind the microphones and showcased in 59% of the country. Other regions will see the Reds at the Giants in 24% of the nation, while the rest will receive the Rangers at the Twins.

CBS will hone in on the FedEx St. Jude Classic with third and final-round coverage of the event on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 3p. Bill Macatee and Ian Baker-Finch are set to provide commentary and analysis from the 18th tower. Gary McCord calls the action at the 17th hole and Peter Kostis at the 16th hole and serves as on-course reporter.

Final Stats for the week ending June 5:

  • The 2011 NASCAR On FOX season concluded Sunday with a 3.9 rating/10 share for the Kansas 400, delivering 6.3 million viewers to the telecast and wrapped up the network’s coverage of the sport this season. The complete 2011 NASCAR season on FOX averaged a 5.0/11 with 8.6 million viewers to mark a three-year high and up 9% over last year.
  • Game 4 of the NBA Finals on ABC averaged a series-high 9.6/16 with 16.1 million viewers Tuesday night, down 3% in households from last year’s 9.9/18 which featured a Lakers-Celtics matchup, but up in the younger male and adult demos including M18-34 ( up 7%), M18-49 ( up 2%), and A18-49 (up 2%).
  • The 2011 NHL Stanley Cup Finals are trending down from last year’s performance with NBC’s telecasts averaging a 2.4/4 with 4.1 million viewers. That rating is down 14% from last year’s 2.8/5. On Versus, Monday’s Stanley Cup Final telecast averaged a 1.6/3 with 2.8 million viewers, down 20%. Of course last year’s series featuring Philadelphia and Chicago helped drive viewers.
  • Univision scored a 1.8/3 with 4.2 million viewers for Sunday night’s Mexico-El Salvador matchup of the Gold Cup, and drew a 3.2 among M18-34.

Sponsorship & Promotion

ESPN’s Monday Night Football is getting a new vibe this fall, with upcoming  telecasts set to feature a new logo for the games. ESPN Creative Services designed the new look, creating a symmetrical badge containing ESPN, flanked by stadium lights, above Monday Night Football with the NFL shield on the bottom. The logo features textures that echo pigskin, metal and rubber.

Office Depot is jumping into NASCAR’s children causes, and will sell the new NASCAR Unites wristbands at more than 1,100 Office Depot stores across the country. Fans who donate $5 to the cause, dedicated toward children’s charities and encouraging acts of service, will receive the item.

Northwestern Mutual has inked four-time PGA Tour champion golfer Mark Wilson to a multi-year sponsorship deal. The life insurance company logo will be displayed on Wilson’s apparel during professional competition, beginning with the 2011 US Open Championship. Additionally, Northwestern Mutual will receive category exclusivity and the right to use Wilson’s name and likeness in marketing promotions. The deal also includes personal appearances by Wilson on behalf of Northwestern Mutual, and social media efforts throughout the agreement.

Digital Fields

Nokia is buckling in with motorsport series, the FIA World Rally Championship in a new multi-year partnership that makes Nokia an International Partner in the sport. Nokia’s technology and brand will be fused throughout the series and include action on WRC.com such as a mobile app that provides access to video footage, live standings and car telemetry data.

Lexus is tapping into the golf mentality via Facebook, launching online golf surveys to coordinate with its partnership with the USGA. Question such as “What would you rather have, the perfect golf game or the perfect marriage? Are you willing to give up a full head of hair, a vacation, even celebrating an anniversary, for that perfect swing? Will Phil Mickelson, Jason Day or Nick Watney perfect their game in time to win the 2011 U.S. Open Championship?” will be featured on the Lexus Facebook page in order to see how obsessed fans are with the game of golf.

The Main Event

Friday: Game 5 Bruins/Canucks on NBC at 8p
Saturday: Belmont Stakes at 5p on NBC. UFC 131 6p on PPV
Sunday: NBA Finals game 6 at 8p on ABC

In My Opinion …

In spite of their newly-found paydays, recent scandals have only highlighted the growing flaws within the NCAA. The organization is in trouble, and it’s only going to get worse if doesn’t start making a stand and provide proactive leadership, even if the decisions aren’t popular. Passing the buck and blaming the BCS, USC, Pryor, Tressel, the state of Arizona, and so forth isn’t going to make these issues go away. Recently, coaches at some of the BCS schools have been vocalizing support to begin paying players, an idea that sounds terrific on paper, and is perhaps deserved. But when you look at school athletic budgets, you quickly realize that the only universities that are able to afford this are the BCS schools, leaving behind the vast majority of the country’s institutions. If NCAA executives don’t provide the leadership necessary to execute some sort of vision soon, maybe those columnists suggesting a BCS split is in the future will be on to something.
