CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

07/07/06

Good Morning. It’s Friday, July 7, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Turner’s TNT has picked up the cable TV rights to Sony Pictures film The Da Vinci Code, distributed by Sony Pictures Television.  The film will first be available to TNT in the fall of 2008, according to Hollywood Reporter.  If the old benchmark for TV rights to feature films is still in place, the license fee should run approx 15% of the total US domestic box office, which thru this past Wednesday has earned $211.5 million.

Tonight’s Premieres:
USA:  Monk at 9p and Psyche at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Family Guy, distributed by Twentieth Television, has been cleared to air in 20 major markets on Tribune Broadcasting stations for a fall 2007 off-net syndication launch. Representing 37.8% of the U.S., the markets and stations include: WPIX/New York, KTLA/Los Angeles, WGN/Chicago, WPHL/Philadelphia,  WLVI/Boston, KDAF/Dallas, WDCW/Washington, KHCW/Houston, KCPQ-KTWB/Seattle, WBZL/Miami, KWGN/Denver, KTXL/Sacramento, KPLR/St. Louis, KWBP/Portland, WXIN-WTTV/Indianapolis, KSWB/San Diego, WTIC-WTXX/Hartford, WXMI/Grand Rapids, WPMT/Harrisburg and WGNO-WNOL/New Orleans.

Thinking about placing a couple of last minute spots in Fox’s All Star Game next week?  Too late.  Game’s sold out, according to Jon Nesvig, President of Sales for Fox and he should know.  Fox was able to get CPM increases in the high single digits, with an average 30-second avail going for $375,000. All together the game will generate approx $25 million in revenue.

Two new series coming to BET:

  • In partnership with Interscope A&M Records, BET will take a candid look at the life of singer Keyshia Cole in a new reality six-part series, Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, set to debut July 12 at 9p. The show will chronicle details of her turbulent, inner city upbringing to being on stage and headlining her U.S. tour at the age of 21 to forming her own record label.
  • DMX: Soul of a Man, a new 6×30 reality series, will air on BET on July 12 at 9:30p.  The sometime controversial rapper/actor reveals his past’s harsh realities, the conflicting dualities of his present, and his future hopes as he tries to leave his rap persona behind when he movies from Brooklyn to the open desert ranges of Carefree, Arizona.

SCI FI Pulse, the broadband channel of SCIFI.COM, will premiere two original series two weeks before their linear debut on the SCI FI Channel. On July 13, viewers will get a sneak peak at the series Amazing Screw-On Head, about a secret agent robot that can screw his head on a number of different bodies then battle entities who threaten civilization. After watching the pilot, produced by Kickstart Productions, viewers can fill out an online survey from NBC Universal’s research department about the show. Viewer input will reportedly influence whether or not the program is greenlit as a full series for the SCI FI Channel or not. Also premiering on SCI FI Pulse on July 13 is the six-episode Darkplace, a British cult favorite medical drama from horror author Garth Marenghi and produced by Avalon Television. Both series are set to debut on the SCI FI Channel on July 27.

TLC will get into the marriage-saving business as they debut a new series, One Week to Save Your Marriage on July 24 at 10p. Hosted by psychotherapist Dr. Robi Ludwig, this one-hour show will air in TLC’s family and parenting block, and will attempt to save the marriages of couples on the verge of separation and divorce. Each episode will look at one couple’s struggles and how they have put themselves in Dr. Ludwig’s program for one week to try to salvage their relationship. The show is produced by BBC Productions USA.

Univision will debut its newest primetime novela, Heridas de Amor (Wounds of Love), on July 11 at 7p.  Jacqueline Bracamontes will portray the young and beautiful Miranda as she waits for her fiance Fabricio (José Luis Resendez) to return from his studies in Europe to get married. The only problem, Fabricio is indeed coming home to get married, but not to Miranda … he’s plans to marry her sister (Karla Alvarez) instead.

The multi-platform lifestyle network, LIME – healthy living with a twist – will introduce a number of new original series this summer and fall, starting with:

  • Pure and Simple with Michel Nischan, premiered July 5. This weekly series travels with chef Michel Nischan as he discovers the freshest ingredients worldwide, then prepares healthy dishes in his own kitchen.
  • Mind, Body and Soul, premieres July 10 and airs Monday-Friday at 730p. A 30m show which examines natural health practices and alternative therapies, including new and ancient treatments.
  • Romancing Your Palate, premieres July 11 at 8p. Hosted by author and flamenco dancer, Patricia Fine, this series will enliven your taste buds in a spicy way.
  • A Balanced, Natural Pregnancy with Dr. Andrea Pennington, premieres August 3 at 8p. This program will chronicle holistic doctor and lifecoach, Dr. Andrea Pennington’s journey as she goes through a completely natural pregnancy and labor process.
  • Juiced, premieres August 8 at 830p. A magazine-style show that gives an assortment of tips and trends on leading a balanced, healthy life.
  • Simply Green with Danny Seo, premieres September 7 at 8p. Eco-stylist Danny Seo gives tips on how to save money, time and the environment by making your life more “green.”
  • Pulse! with Oz Garcia, premieres October 3 at 8p. In this series learn Dr. Oz Garcia’s secrets on how to look, feel and function 10 years younger.

The nominations for the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced early yesterday, and the list is – as is tradition – causing some to celebrate and others to shake their heads in disbelief.  Who was nominate and who wasn’t nominated is a favorite topic this time of year .  Adding fuel to the discussion is the Academy of Television Arts & Science’s decision to create a so-called blue ribbon panel to finalize the list of nominees for best comedy or drama series, and best actor/actress. Not found on the list – Lost or any drama series on CBS for the best drama series; My Name is Earl is absent from the best comedy series list as is Desperate Housewives; no actors from The Sopranos, House or The Shield, and no shows from the WB or UPN in any of the top categories. You be the judge – the show, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will air on NBC Sunday, August 27 at 8p, live from the Shrine Auditorium in LA. An abbreviated list of the top categories including best drama or comedy series, can be found at www.cynopsis.com under the Editions: Cynopsis tab. A full list of categories and nominees can be found at www.emmys.org
