Good morning. It’s Friday, July 30, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
CITV (UK) orders the new kid series The Cool stuff Collective (13×20) from Archie Productions, a UK-based indie kid/entertainment company. Targeted to kids/tweens 7-12, The Cool Stuff Collective is a studio based magazine series that feature, test and review things that kids want to watch, own, eat, download and play. Hosted by Sy Thomas (The Kids Choice Awards; Me:TV, Slime Across the UK, Little Howards Big Question), the series will be produced this fall at MTV Studios in Camden. Some of the series segments include: Destruction Den a place where accidents happen on purpose, such as those that happen in real life such as what happens when a new MP3 player meets with a glass of lemonade; The Popcrash Grannies if grandma likes the song is must not be cool; The Classroom Committee classes of real kids review games, consoles and DVDs; Star with the Remote Control Car testing remote control toys and watching celebrities perform a stunt with remote control toys; Movie Trail Monkey showcasing new movie trailers and rating the movie based on how much the monkey likes the movie.
AOL Kids ( www.kids.aol.com ) partners with Weplay.com ( www.weplay.com ), an online youth sports community, to launch a sports destination for kids at AOL Kids Sports ( www.kids.aol.com/sports/ ). The new area allows kids to earn rewards for their sporting efforts, play sports games, watch videos, hang out with teammates, meet professional players and connect with other young athletes online. AOL Kids is targeted to kids 6-12 and features email, favorites and weather, as well as games and activities across topics including music, sports, animals and entertainment.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Rainmaker Entertainment enters into a first-look producing deal with visual effects specialist Wilson Tang (Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, The Hulk) to develop and direct animated digital features and content. Tang was previously with Electronic Arts Canada, where he was Sr. Art Director and franchise Creative Director. He previously served as Visual Effects Art Director for George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic, and was a founder of The Embassy VFX in Vancouver.
Rob Schneider is lending his voice to Norm in Crest Animation Studios 3D family movie Norm of the North, per THR. The movie is the second in a three picture deal with Lionsgate, which is distributing the movie in North America, the first is the CGI animated family movie Alpha And Omega releasing this fall. Penned by Steven and Daniel Altiere, Norm of the North revolves around a polar bear named Norm and his three lemming pals who make their way to NYC when their Arctic home begins to disintegrate.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Fox and the Teen Choice 2010 awards are partnering with Planet Cazmo ( www.planetcazmo.com ) and Tommy Mottola to create a unique Teen Choice online environment, Virtual Teen Choice Beach Party, which will be accessible via TeenChoiceAwards.com ( www.teenchoiceawards.com ). Fan can access Virtual Teen Choice Beach Party after logging their votes online for Teen Choice 2010, which airs Monday, August 9 at 8p on Fox. Glee’s Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Cory Monteith and Mark Salling will host the 12th annual Teen Choice awards with singer Katy Perry. On the environment, kids/teens can create and customize avatars and virtual homes, chat with friends, play games and interact with other members as well as buy virtual goods.
Chocolate Liberation Front (CLF), the year-old interactive producer, lines up a slate of TV-based multi-platform projects in the US, Canada and Australia including Santo Sam & Ed’s Cup Fever!, Dance Academy, Harriet The Spy and The Kids In The Hall.
- Santo Sam & Ed’s Cup Fever! a social media experience produced by CLF for SBS and Australia-based production company Working Dog. During the World Cup, CLF delivered a 24/7 online environment to support the World Cup live television program, delivering 1+ million visits to the social network extensions.
- Also in Australia, CLF has been tapped by Werner Film Productions, ZDF and ABC3 to produce the Dance Academy choreography application, Dance Academy Dance Maker.
- In Canada, animation studio 9Story has commissioned CLF to produce a promotional web site for the new Disney Channel TV movie Harriet The Spy: Blog Wars, and Accent Entertainment and CBC appointed CLF to deliver the interactive strategy for the latest Kids In The Hall eight-part prime time series ‘Death Comes To Town,’ which includes behind the scenes footage, original video and an interactive hockey game.
- CLF is currently producing The Wild Kratts interactive project for the Kratt Brothers, 9Story, TVO and PBS, with financial assistance from The Bell Broadcast & New Media Fund and The OMDC – an Asylum Seeker Simulation for SBS with the assistance of Screen Australia, Film Victoria and in conjunction with the Refugee Council and The Immigration Museum.
Coming at us this fall, Amulet Books, an Abrams imprint, will release the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth, on Tuesday, November 9. The fifth book in author Jeff Kinney’s book series, The Ugly Truth has a purple cover and will have an initial printing of 5+ million copies, making it the largest first printing of any title in the series. A second Wimpy Kid movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, is currently in production and slated for release on March 25, 2011. The first movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, releases on DVD and Blu-ray next Tuesday, August 3, 2010.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Activision Publishing and Nickelodeon will release iCarly: iJoin The Click! for Wii and Nintendo DS internationally this fall. The game, the second iCarly title, invites player to be the new kid at Ridgeway High as they socialize with series characters Carly, Sam and Freddie and help make new iCarly webisodes.
Disney Interactive Studios will release Disney Tangled: The Video Game for Wii, Nintendo DS and Windows/PC in time for holiday 2010. Based on the upcoming Disney 3D animated feature, Tangled, the kid/family-aimed game is a story-based adventure. The game and movie both feature the voices of Mandy Moore and Zach Levi. Tangled is set for a November 24, 2010 release.
Vans will introduce a line of Yo Gabba Gabba! sneakers for kids and toddlers this November at retailers and online at shop.vans.com. The collection offers eight different versions of Yo Gabba Gabba! Vans, with each series character featured on their own show as well as two versions of a group character shoe. Created by Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz, Yo Gabba Gabba! Is produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain Entertainment.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Dolores Gavin is upped to VP/Development, Discovery Channel. Based at Discovery’s Silver Spring headquarters, she will report to Stephen Reverand, SVP/Development and Production East Coast, Discovery Channel. Gavin joined Discovery Channel last February as Sr. Director/Development. She previously served as VP/Development and Programming, History Channel, and began her career at DreamWorks SKG and DreamWorks Animation.
Warner Bros. Pictures names Lynne Frank to the newly created position of EVP/International Marketing. Frank, who is relocating from London to Burbank, will work with Sue Kroll, President/Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros. Pictures and international marketing execs to establish and implement a strategy development, and business and campaign planning and execution for all territories. Frank will also be involved in local acquisitions for regional releases and will serve as an international liaison between various divisions such as home entertainment, TV and consumer products. She will report to Kroll. Most recently, Frank was MD and SVP, ESPN Europe, Middle East & Africa. She previously toiled as MD and EVP/European Entertainment Networks, Turner Broadcasting System Europe.
