Cynopsis: DIGITAL
07/02/10

Good morning, it’s Thursday, July 1, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click hereAnd a quick reminder — Cynopsis will be on an editorial vacation all next week, returning on Monday, July 12.

As promised the federal government is cooperating with local and regional branches to step up the war against intellectual piracy, busting 9 websites accused of facilitating P2P downloads of first-run movies such as “Toy Story 3” and “Iron Man 2″”. The focus of the crackdown was on ad supported sites that allow users to download pirated movies for free. Federal authorities seized the domain names of sites including ThePirateCity.org and PlanetMoviez.com as well as assets from 15 bank, investment and ad accounts – issuing search warrants in 4 states, according to a joint statement issued from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY).

DirecTV unveiled its first suite of 3D channels, including the DirecTV Cinema channel (featuring IMAX titles such as “Deep Sea 3D”) and n3D, a new network powered by Panasonic being offered for no extra charge throughout the month of July. n3D will feature a selection of  exclusive originals as well as some sporting events – including the local broadcast of the Yanks/Mariners series on July 10-11 and the national broadcast of the MLB All-Star game from Anaheim on July 13.

Charter announced it is adding PBS’ pre-school programming service Sprout as an On Demand offering across its entire footprint. The MSO also plans to add the linear digital channel on a market-by-market basis by the end of 2010.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Popular mobile and social gaming developer Tapulous (“Tap Tap Revenge”, “Riddim Ribbon”) has been acquired by Disney after the studio showed its interest in the sector by participating in Playdom’s most recent funding round, reports TechCruch. Tapulous has been a poster boy among game developers for the iPhone, featured in several Apple ads and used by Steve Jobs on stage as a way to demonstrate the iPhone 4’s new multitasking functionality.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Mobile video ad network Rhythm NewMedia has added several new features to its mobile ad software development kit (SDK) including picture-in-picture video browsing, interactive pre-roll video ads and support for Apple’s new iOS 4 mobile operating system. Rhythm also says it will be ready with an iPad solution when iOS 4 launches for the device this fall.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Google agreed to acquire travel search vertical ITA Software for $700 million in cash, its 4th largest acquisition to date. ITA provides back-end search and booking technology to airlines and websites who deploy travel search engines. Travel has been a major focus for competitor Bing, which often touts Bing Travel in its commercials.

HP
closed on its acquisition of troubled mobile device maker Palm Inc. for $1.2 billion in cash, giving it a toehold in the fast growing smartphone market.

ComScore acquired the products division of Nexius, Inc., a provider of mobile carrier-grade solutions that provides network analysis, intelligence, and insight on capacity issues and configuration analytics.

WiMax mobile internet provider Clearwire added seven new cities to its coverage map including Rochester and Syracuse NY and Eugene, OR. The launches bring Clear’s total footprint to 44 U.S. markets covering some 50 million people.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Two media screens are better than one in moving consumers from awareness to action, according to a new Nielsen study of direct-to-consumer drug advertising. Exposure on TV and online was more than twice as likely to prompt patients to ask their physician about the drug than TV alone. The study also found that premium in-stream video ads which aired as part of a full-length TV episode online generated significantly higher levels of ad recall and brand recognition than other internet video, display or standard TV ads. The key for media buyers is to target consumers based on more sophisticated media targeting models, taking into account intangibles besides just age and gender, including family profile and lifestyle. TV continues to be an important part of the mix, but there are diminishing returns after an initial buy.

With 3D theatrical releases continuing to roll out and competition in the home theater space thickening, IMS Research put out new projections that 5.99 million 3D TV sets will ship worldwide in 2010 and 218 million 3D TV sets will ship cumulatively from 2010 to 2015. IMS Research also forecasts that over 241 million homes will have a 3D Blu-ray Disc player and over 280 million TV households will have an HD set-top box by the end of 2015.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

After lowering the price of the original 6-inch screen Kindle, Amazon unveiled a new, updated version of its deluxe Kindle DX model, slashing the price from $489 to $379. While still black and white, Amazon says the DX’s E-Ink display features a 50% better contrast ratio for even better viewing in the summer sun. The other selling point of the Kindle continues to be its global 3G connection for downloading books that is bundled in with the price.

Going on a road trip for the 4th? Starbucks began offering free Wi-Fi at all 6,800 hundred of its locations in the U.S. from yesterday. (Previous Wi-Fi services, supplied through AT&T, required registration with a Starbucks card, limited to 2 hours of connection time.)

Fuel TV followed up its iPhone video viewing app with a new free app for Android devices, featuring content from 9 video channels, live-event streaming and the ability to filter news by sport. The app will also let users upload photos of themselves and opt-in to get message updates regarding live events, blog updates, breaking news, and new shows.

To drum up interest in Without A Trace reruns premiering on Monday, July 5, ION Television launched a new Facebook integration on its minisite for the show. Agree to give the site access to your account to be asked a series of personal questions that relate to a fictional missing persons case involving info on your user profile.

Yahoo launched new Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger apps for Android, as well as a new Yahoo Search Widget for the Google-powered platform.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Move Networks announced plans to retain a financial advisor to look into a possible sale of the company. Move, which has been a market leader in adaptive bitrate streaming for over-the-top delivery of online video, has struggled to reinvent itself after competing technologies became widely available. The company has laid off much of its staff and says President and CEO Roxanne Austin is stepping down, leaving EVP/Sales and Biz Dev Marcus Liassides as the new President to oversee day-to-day operations.

Former head of content for the Travel Channel Michael Klein has joined Sundance Channel as SVP/Original Programming and Development. He is based in New York and reports to Sarah Barnett, EVP and GM, Sundance Channel.

Anna Pezik will join Hearst Magazines Digital Media as Fashion and Beauty Director on July 12, a new position. Anna will oversee the web teams for HarpersBazaar.com and RealBeauty.com and coordinate planning for fashion and beauty coverage across Hearst’s portfolio of sites.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

AETN Digital Media has completed a relaunch of its History.com site just in time for the 4th of July. (Independence Day-themed content includes multiple articles, slideshows and video clips including this snippet starring Cambridge, Mass.-born Matt Damon reciting and explaining the Declaration of Independence.) The site now archives more than 4,000 videos, 550 audio clips and 50 different interactive multimedia features, produced to complement the network’s specials. Getting younger viewers interested in history-themed programming requires speaking to them on the platforms they’re most familiar with and applications like this Ultimate History Quiz (accessible via the web, iPhone and Android) should pay dividends. The time-sensitive application tests your knowledge of U.S. History, tracking the fastest, most accurate and top individual scores and allowing users to also challenge their friends’ knowledge. How did I possibly remember that Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin? The brain works in mysterious ways.
