Good morning. It’s Friday, July 28, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Court TV underwent another round of layoffs and a dozen executives were let go including Charlie Collier, EVP/General Manager of Sales. Court TV was acquired by Time Warner, and the channel is now overseen by Turner Broadcasting. Yesterday was the second round of layoffs since the acquisition and reportedly was also the last. This time the layoffs were in the sales, HR and legal departments, whereas last month the first round of departures were primarily in the affiliate sales and finance departments.
As it turns out, ABC’s The One isn’t the one after all. After just two outings and an average A18-49 rating of a 1.0 for both the show and the results show, the little-viewed competition show has been pulled from the schedule. Considering it aired on a night/time opposite Rock Star: Supernova, So You Think You Can Dance? and America’s Got Talent, all of which are several levels into their competitions, just what did ABC expect from a brand new and unknown singing contest?
FX kicked off it’s second season of 30 Days on Wednesday night and for its efforts drew 1.5 million viewers to the channel. That’s about the same numbers the show earned for its first season premiere last season.
More TV showing up on iTunes this morning – this time the contributing network is E! Entertainment. Available within 24 hours of airing on the network, Dr. 90210, The Soup, The Girls Next Door and Simple Life will all be available for the standard buck-ninety-nine download at iTunes.
International Creative Management, better known as ICM, is buying the literary agency Broder Webb Chervin Silbermann Agency (BWCS). The latter reps a high level boat of creators, exec producers and showrunners, including several connected to hit shows Grey’s Anatomy, Two and a Half Men, Law & Order: SVU an My Name is Earl. All of BWCS’s agent staff will move over to ICM. Chris Silbermann, managing partner of BWCS, will become co-Prez of ICM, while Nancy Josephson, current co-president at ICM, is leaving.
LIN TV is purchasing Raycom Media’s Albuquerque, New Mexico, station, KASA, for a reported price of $55 million in cash. The Fox affiliate will be managed by LIN TV as of August 31, tho the deal is not expected to close until some time in fourth quarter following the usual regulatory approvals. This is LIN’s second acquisition in the Albuquerque market – it recently picked up KRQE, the CBS station, and this deal gives LIN a duopoly in the 46th market.
Lloyd Segan and Shawn Piller of Piller/Segan, producers of The Dead Zone on USA Network and ABC Family’s Wildfire, have signed a new first-look deal with Lionsgate to develop and produce scripted programming for broadcast and cable, thus extending their current relationship. Several new projects are already in development and Adam Fratto is managing these efforts at Piller/Segan as VP/Development.
ABC’s Lost has added another new cast member – Elizabeth Mitchell. The news of her signing comes just days after ABC announced the addition of Rodrigo Santoro to the cast. Lost will kick off it’s third season on October 4.
20th Century Fox Television has signed a one year development deal with filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro to create hour long drama projects.
Joining the cast of NBC’s The Office are Ed Helms who you know from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and Chip Esten from Who’s Line is it Anyway? Both are added as new employees of the Dundler Mifflin paper company. The Office premieres on September 21st.
Casting Call: Screaming Flea Productions is for couples in the midst of divorce who are interested in telling their story on television in a new design program. Each episode chronicles the story of one couple’s relationship, each sadly ending in divorce. Our designers split up the household goods and design two brand new homes. At the end of each episode both parties will have a new place to live that is designed to fit their new lifestyle. For more information e-mail [email protected].
GRB Entertainment has promoted Marielle Zuccarelli to SVP/International Sales to head up the company’s international division, reporting direct to Gary R. Benz, President/CEO. Additionally, the company has hired Hud Woodle as Director/International Sales and Marine Ksadzhikyan has been upped to Account Executive/International Sales. Both will report to Marielle Zuccarelli.
Tammy Haddad has been appointed VP/Washington for MSNBC. She will oversee political and election coverage for the network based in the Washington offices. Tammy will also continue as Executive Producer of Hardball with Chris Matthews, reporting to Dan Abrams, General Manager.
GoTV Networks has hired two new members for its studio team: Erika Lewis as VP/Development and Chris Greenleaf as VP/Comedy and Entertainment. Both will assist in furthering the growth of the network in the mobile TV landscape.
Charlie Collier, EVP/General Manager of Ad Sales at Court TV is departing the network. The news of Charlie’s departure comes just as another round of layoffs is happening at that network, which was acquired by Time Warner in May. Approximately twelve of Court TV’s staff were let go including senior managers in the human resource and legal departments. Since Court TV now reports to Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting, all ad sales, legal and human relations duties will be handled by Turner staffers.
WABC-AM/New York has named Lisa Ann Bonk to the position of General Sales Manager, effective immediately. She will have responsibility for local, regional and national advertising sales and sponsorship opportunities for the station, as well as expanding sales to new media platforms. Lisa Ann reports to Steve Borneman, President/General Manager.
Teresa Wilson Lux has been elevated to VP/Marketing for Southern Living. She will manage as well as create marketing programs for special promotions. Teresa will also oversee the magazine’s overall marketing efforts and brand development.

Friday Fun Fact: Famed Chef Wolfgang Puck chose the Italian word “Spago” as the name for his popular chain of restaurants. In Italian, spago = “string” or “twine” slang for spaghetti.
The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1939- Judy Garland records “Over the Rainbow” for the movie, “The Wizard of Oz.” While Glen Miller had already recorded the song, Garland would make the song even more popular. Garland would go on to win an Oscar for Best Original Song.
