Good morning. It’s Friday, July 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Paramount, DreamWorks and Nickelodeon Movies hosted a panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego during which official casting news was announced, some of which had been rumors prior to this, footage from new projects was screened and actors, directors and writers were on hand for the event and some for Q&A:
- Director/Producer J.J. Abrams revealed that Leonard Nimoy has signed on to return as Mr. Spock in the new Star Trek movie, and that the young Spock will be played by Zachary Quinto (Skylar on Heroes). Star Trek is slated for release on Christmas Day 2008.
- Steven Spielberg, appearing via satellite with Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf and Ray Winstone from the set of Indiana Jones 4 (title TBD), announced Karen Allen, who co-starred in Raiders of the lost Ark, would return in the new movie. Indian Jones 4 is set for release Memorial Day weekend 2008.
- Additionally, the presentation included debut screening of footage and/or trailers for upcoming movies including: Hot Rod (August 3, 2007); Stardust (August 10, 2007); Beowulf (November 16, 2007); The Spiderwick Chronicles (February 15, 2008); Iron Man (May 2, 2008); and Drillbit Taylor (March 21, 2008).
A casting change for the upcoming CG animated movie Igor. Eddie Izzard takes over the role of the character Schadenfreude, which was to be voiced by Jeremy Piven, per the Hollywood Reporter. The movie is produced by Exodus Film Group and distributed by the Weinstein Company.
MORE KIDS STUFF
As part of a new deal between ESPN, MediaFLO USA Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc., and Verizon Wireless, action sports fans will be able to watch live competitions, practices as well as other content from the X Games 13 on a new mobile TV channel, EXPN on V Cast Mobile TV. EXPN will be available throughout the X Games 13, August 2-5.
Astral Media’s Family Channel will premiere the second season of Disney’s The Emperor’s New School on Friday, September 7. Season two is comprised of 18 episodes of the series and will air on the Canadian broadcaster Monday-Friday, with new episodes debuting each Friday.
There probably aren’t a lot of kids/teens with iPhones, yet, but this is interesting nonetheless. The Japanese company Voice Bank, Inc. plans to start delivering Manga titles for iPhone users in the US. With the support Digital Manga Association of Japan, Voice Bank has developed a service, the iPhone Manage Converter, which allows users to view Manga on their iPhones. Stay tuned on this one.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Verizon is teaming up with Disney Channel and Disney Connection for promotions to support the upcoming debut of the TV movie, High School Musical 2 (HSM2). All Verizon FiOS TV subscribers will be able to watch HSM2 on Disney Channel on Demand, which will be available for one week beginning August 10, a week prior to the Disney Channel premiere of HSM2 on August 17.
- Verizon stores in Texas, Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey will offer new customers who activate FiOS TV service by August 5, a limited edition HSM2 lunchbox, from this week.
- Verizon is also running a HSM2 related sweepstakes on through VerizonSurround.com, a broadband portal. Verizon FiOS internet and high-speed internet customers will be able to access additional HSM2 content via Disney Connection including a new game and behind-the-scenes video.
Bolder Media, Inc., has entered into a licensing pact with Jakks Pacific, Inc,. to develop and market a line of craft and activity productions based on Bolder’s property, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Jakks Pacific plans to release products including jumbo activity pads, clip desks, activity totes among others. Produced by Bolder Media in association with Starz Media, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, is an animated preschool series that airs on Nick Jr. and Noggin in the US.
Exodus Film Group and entered into a deal with IDW Publishing to produce comic books based on Exodus’ CG animated feature film Igor. IDW’s Igor publishing plan includes a mini-series of color prequel titles, which will be followed by a series of titles that take readers through the movie and what happens afterwards. Eventually, each of these miniseries will be collected and released as a paperback. Exodus also has a publishing deal with Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division, which will publish seven Igor books under its Simon Scribbles and Simon Spotlight imprints. The Weinstein Company is handling worldwide distribution for the film, which is set for a wide theatrical release on October 24, 2008
In other Indiana Jones news, Dark Horse Comics has acquired the comic book rights to Indiana Jones. Dark Horse plans to launch a new comic book series next year. The first of two Indiana Jones Omnibuses collecting the publisher’s previous graphic novels based on the property in February 2008. The first volume of Indiana Jones Adventures, a digest-sized graphic novel for young readers and up, is set for release in April 2008. Moving forward from there, the Indiana Jones Adventures and the Omnibuses will be published on a quarterly basis, including Omnibuses for the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and the original Marvel run of Indiana Jones comics.
Universal Studios Consumer Products Groups has inked its first licensing deals for products based on the TV series Heroes across a range of categories. In the publishing category deals include: DC Comics will publish a hardcover book this fall featuring a complication of the online Heroes graphic novels, which are on NBC.com; in late 2007 Random House will publish Saving Charlie, a novel about Hiro and Charlie from series creator/writer Tim Kring; Titan Publishing is to launch the Heroes magazine, the comic book style bi-monthly publication will feature information about the actors and behind the scenes content (e.g. special effects). Additional deals include: Topps is to release a line of Heroes trading cards, and Topps’ WizKids Inc., will add Heroes character into the HeroClix miniature game; MeadWestvaco is producing a 2008 calendar; Scorpio Posters series posters; and Changes is developing a line of Heroes apparel; Mezco Toyz will introduce Heroes action figures, dioramas and deluxe figures, in various scale sizes, in early 2008. Finally, Universal Pictures digital Platforms Group and Ubisoft have teamed to create a video game based on the series.
Sci Fi Channel and Virgin Comics revealed that The Stranded will be first original title to be published under the Sci Fi/Virgin Comics banner. Created and written by Mike Carey, The Stranded is set in two worlds and follows the adventures of five regular people, each with extraordinary abilities, who are responsible for the fate of the universe. Scheduled for release later this year, The Stranded will be distributed by Diamond Comics.
Video game developer/publisher Electronic Arts Inc., has established a new EA entity in Russia. The new EA office and team are based in Moscow and will focus on bringing more localized games to Russian gamers as well as developing a more direct relationship with the gaming community and work more closely with its retail partners in the region. EA plans to release localized versions of two EA games that are popular with Russian players, Need for Speed and FIFA Football for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, later this year.

Dave Landesberg joins SloanVision Unlimited, Inc., as Director/Licensing. Landesberg focus his energies licensing products for all properties that SVU represents as well as managing the brands. Landesberg brings to SVU Coney Island USA, which he has been representing for the past three years. Prior to this he was with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Previously Landesberg held positions with United Media, Lifetime Television and ad agencies including Griffin Bacal, TBWA Chiat/Day, and McCann-Erickson.
