Cynopsis: Kids!

7/27/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Paramount, DreamWorks and Nickelodeon Movies hosted a panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego during which official casting news was announced, some of which had been rumors prior to this, footage from new projects was screened and actors, directors and writers were on hand for the event and some for Q&A:

  • Director/Producer J.J. Abrams revealed that Leonard Nimoy has signed on to return as Mr. Spock in the new Star Trek movie, and that the young Spock will be played by Zachary Quinto (Skylar on Heroes).  Star Trek is slated for release on Christmas Day 2008.
  • Steven Spielberg, appearing via satellite with Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf and Ray Winstone from the set of Indiana Jones 4 (title TBD), announced Karen Allen, who co-starred in Raiders of the lost Ark, would return in the new movie.  Indian Jones 4 is set for release Memorial Day weekend 2008.
  • Additionally, the presentation included debut screening of footage and/or trailers for upcoming movies including: Hot Rod (August 3, 2007); Stardust (August 10, 2007); Beowulf (November 16, 2007); The Spiderwick Chronicles (February 15, 2008); Iron Man (May 2, 2008); and Drillbit Taylor (March 21, 2008).

A casting change for the upcoming CG animated movie IgorEddie Izzard takes over the role of the character Schadenfreude, which was to be voiced by Jeremy Piven, per the Hollywood Reporter.  The movie is produced by Exodus Film Group and distributed by the Weinstein Company.

Universal Studios Consumer Products Groups has inked its first licensing deals for products based on the TV series Heroes across a range of categories.  In the publishing category deals include: DC Comics will publish a hardcover book this fall featuring a complication of the online Heroes graphic novels, which are on NBC.com; in late 2007 Random House will publish Saving Charlie, a novel about Hiro and Charlie from series creator/writer Tim Kring; Titan Publishing is to launch the Heroes magazine, the comic book style bi-monthly publication will feature information about the actors and behind the scenes content (e.g. special effects).  Additional deals include: Topps is to release a line of Heroes trading cards, and Topps’ WizKids Inc., will add Heroes character into the HeroClix miniature game; MeadWestvaco is producing a 2008 calendar; Scorpio Posters  series posters; and Changes is developing a line of Heroes apparel; Mezco Toyz will introduce Heroes action figures, dioramas and deluxe figures, in various scale sizes, in early 2008.  Finally, Universal Pictures digital Platforms Group and Ubisoft have teamed to create a video game based on the series.

Sci Fi Channel and Virgin Comics revealed that The Stranded will be first original title to be published under the Sci Fi/Virgin Comics banner.  Created and written by Mike Carey, The Stranded is set in two worlds and follows the adventures of five regular people, each with extraordinary abilities, who are responsible for the fate of the universe.  Scheduled for release later this year, The Stranded will be distributed by Diamond Comics.

Video game developer/publisher Electronic Arts Inc., has established a new EA entity in Russia.  The new EA office and team are based in Moscow and will focus on bringing more localized games to Russian gamers as well as developing a more direct relationship with the gaming community and work more closely with its retail partners in the region.  EA plans to release localized versions of two EA games that are popular with Russian players, Need for Speed and FIFA Football for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, later this year.
