Cynopsis: DIGITAL

7/27/07

Good Morning, it’s Friday, July 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Following Sony’s announcement to use Crackle.com to scout for budding online talent, MySpace launches “The Storyteller Challenge,” inviting aspiring producers to submit 5-7 minute pilots on a dedicated MySpace page for a chance to score a development deal with Fox. Judges from the Producers Guild of America, top film schools and Fox’s executive ranks will choose two winners who will also receive $25,000 in cash. The contest starts September 4th.

MTV is promoting the premiere of the third season of The Hills with a virtual party on MTV.com. Invitations are available to folks who pre-order the season 2 DVD. Fans can create their own avatar, interact with virtual celebrities and shop for merchandise on the site. The show’s microsite will also feature an interactive talk show this season, streamed live after each episode.

TBS.com is featuring online recaps from episodes of last season’s My Boys to catch viewers up before the show premieres its second season on July 30 at 10 pm ET/PT. TBS is also hosting a marathon featuring all 13 episodes of the previous season beginning July 29 at 10 am ET/PT.

NBC’s AccessHollywood.com is making hay out of Lindsay Lohan‘s latest scrape with the law. Coverage of Billy Bush’s exclusive email exchange with the starlet attracted more than 8 million page views on Wednesday according to Omniture’s tracking figures, the highest volume day in the site’s 11-year history. She swore to Bush that the drugs weren’t hers.

Bravo is inviting fans to submit rants about their bosses online or via text message to promote Flipping Out, its new series about real estate flippers.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Tucson-based Zeop is offering a plug-and-play web server software product that turns any Microsoft web server into a video sharing site. The software suite allows webmasters to serve their own videos without going through a streaming service. Zeop software licenses start at $495 plus $195/year for a 500-video capacity system.

Animax Entertainment developed a user generated mash-up contest for ice cream maker Dippin’ Dots. Users can go online and utilize a Flash-based tool to create a short featuring the Dippin’ Dots mascot Packy for a chance to win cash and prizes. The deadline to enter is August 14.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

A Massachusetts Federal judge warned ConnectU that its lawsuit against social networking site Facebook lacks factual evidence that Facebook employees stole the company’s business model and computer code, according to reports. The judge gave ConnectU founders, who operate a similar service with a much smaller following, an additional two weeks to produce more concrete evidence.

The NAB has thrown its full support behind the controversial Internet Radio Equality Act introduced in April by Rep. Jay Inslee.  The act sets forth to replace per-performance payments with a transitional rate pegged at 7.5% of revenue, driving up costs significantly for internet broadcasters. The NAB also outlined its strategy for the 2009 digital TV transition in a letter to Senate Commerce Committee members. Plans include hiring additional staff, commissioning research and leading a media push involving paid marketing, PSAs and the DTV website.  The Senate Commerce Committee is more than a little concerned the public is not prepared for the transition.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is trying to say enough is enough regarding fair use of songs on the internet. The EFF filed a complaint this week asking a federal court to uphold the fair use and free speech of a mother who posted a video of her toddler dancing to the Prince song “Let’s Go Crazy.” The Universal Music Publishing Group had ordered the clip to be removed due to copyright infringement.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Microsoft
acquired the online ad exchange AsECN, its third digital advertising acquisition during the past two months. Like competitor Right Media, AdECN operates real-time auctions for buying and selling internet display ads where ad networks can purchase slots from multiple sites and sell them at higher rates to advertisers.

A feature in the most recent issue of Wired questions the wisdom of buying ads in virtual worlds. Examining Linden Lab’s “resident” statistics, it claims Second Life’s current 7 million+ residents only translate to 4 million unique users as many visitors create more than one avatar. What’s more, 85% of the avatars created have been abandoned. Much of the traffic to Second Life is from Europe and Asia, according to the article, with little more than 100,000 Americans per week visiting the site.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Nielsen unveiled its first results from its new GamePlay Metrics service. Sony’s PlayStation2 accounted for 42% of video game console usage during June, followed by Xbox (17%), Xbox 360 (8%), GameCube (5.8%) and Nintendo’s Wii (4%). The PS3 accounted for only 1.5% of total minutes used. PC gamers played Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft 4 times more than any other PC game. Nielsen reported that 68.1 million gamers used a console in June, playing an average of 7.5 days for the month. The service is expected to give a boost to the nascent in game advertising medium.

Following Nielsen’s decision to replace page views with the time spent metric, ComScore is also revamping its measurement service, calculating average usage from a cross section of users around the country and separating users into heavy, medium and light surfers. The rationale is that heavy users visit more sites and consume a disproportionate share of pages, therefore skewing results.

Online video ad spending will spike 89% to $775 million this year and sustain a 40% growth rate through 2011 when video ad revenue will reach $4.3 billion, according to a new analysis by eMarketer. Yet several factors hold back the medium; as much as 77% of viewers find online video ads intrusive according to a report from Burst Media. The aspect of online video liked the least was “too many video ads,” according to a Synovate study commissioned by Clipblast.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Veoh appointed Steve Mitgang as its new CEO. Steve comes over from Yahoo! where he was SVP of the Global Team, overseeing advertising, platforms and services. Veoh founding CEO Dimitry Shapiro will now assume the role of Founder and Chief Innovation Officer, focusing on technology and consumer standards. Jennifer Betka was also added as SVP/Marketing, joining from Sirius Satellite Radio.

Tivo
named Karen Bressner to the post of SVP/Ad Sales, reporting to Tom Rogers, Tivo President and CEO. Karen previously served as SVP/Nation Ad Sales for TV Land and Nick at Nite.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Google‘s Gmail team is having some fun with a video clip promotion of its own. Users are encouraged to make their own video clip involving an “M” envelope that is passed around from party to party, the goal being to eventually splice together a passing of the envelope around the world. (The actual image can be cut and pasted from the Gmail site.)  The Gmail staff will update the site as clips are submitted and a final compilation will be posted YouTube when all the entries are in. Clips are due by August 13.
