Google had to shut down users’ ability to invite friends to the new Google+ social network on Wednesday night due to “insane” demand, according to a posting by project manager Vic Gundotra. The company has been testing Google+ internally and is now attempting to roll it out gradually to the general public. Meanwhile Facebook, its chief competitor, is getting ready to “launch something awesome” next week, in the words of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who spoke to reporters on Thursday in the company’s Seattle office. Could it be a long awaited Facebook iPad app? We’ll have to wait and see.

.’s U.K. newspaper division announced that its two newspapers (the Times and the Sunday Times) have 101,036 monthly digital subscribers at the end of June a year after erecting its pay wall – up 28% from 79,000 at the end of February. The number includes subscribers to the websites, the iPad and the Kindle. The Times is downloaded onto an average of 35k iPads every day, an increase of 40% in the four months since February.
The quadrennial Copa America soccer tournament kicks off in Argentina today across multiple digital platforms including and the Univision Deportes-Futbol App for iPhone and iPad users. Following its experience providing online cricket coverage of the Indian Premiere League, YouTube has also signed a deal with rights holder Traffic Sports to stream the matches across 54 countries at, beginning with today’s opening match between hosts Argentina and Bolivia. YouTube will also feature match highlights throughout the month.


The soft launch of MoviePass in San Francisco this weekend, the Netflix-style movie ticketing system that charges $50/mo. for unlimited admissions, is making waves among both distributors and exhibitors, according to The Wrap. The start-up cut deals with online ticketing services rather than directly with theaters or theater chains and in fact failed to notify exhibitors of the scheme.


Ad campaigns that utilize GPS location tools and local market targeting are growing rapidly in the mobile advertising space, according to Millennial Media‘s latest trend report. Campaigns featuring a store locator grew 48% month-over-month while 49% of all targeted audience campaigns used Local Market audience targeting. Campaigns that gave users the option to take a social media action grew 36% month-over-month. This trend is most seen in Telecom, Entertainment and Retail, as advertisers try to gain social media followers or get feedback on new movie releases/product launches, according to the mobile ad network.
Three top digital ad agencies – Rosetta, Omnicomm’s Resolution Media and Publicis’ Performics – have announced they are standardizing their respective search engine optimization practices onto BrightEdge‘s SEO platform. The cloud-based system allows marketers to manage and make quick changes to campaigns across social, mobile and local platforms.


There’s plenty of speculation surrounding the decision to allow Justin Timberlake, who played tech entrepreneur Sean Parker in “The Social Network,” to purchase an unspecified stake in MySpace with Specific Media. Specific Media CEO Tim Vanderhook told AdAge that Justin brings immediate “credibility” to the company and that he could have a role in “driving creative strategy.” The actor/pop star is surely expected to tap his friendships with singers and entertainers to help make MySpace relevant again.
Neustar Media announced the availability of its digital rights management system (DRM), submitted on June 27 to the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE) for use in its UltraViolet digital rights locker system. DECE is a new iTunes competitor being build to store and authenticate transactional, purchased media – allowing consumers to purchase a movie or TV show once then access it over the web from any connected device. The system is expected to be ready for consumer launch sometime during Q4.
The FCC issued additional guidance to cable operators and ISPs regarding their obligations to disclose certain info to consumers related to the net neutrality transparency rule. Such guidance is expected to clear the way for the FCC to send an application required under federal law to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget for approval – a process that is required before the rules specified in the FCC’s Open Internet Order can take effect.
Amazon and reacted quickly to the signing of the new online tax law by Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday. Both announced they will sever their relationships with California-based affiliates to avoid having to collect the tax.
VOD vendor Concurrent has reached agreements with another four cable operators in China including leading Chinese MSO Jiangsu CATV, which serves more than 20 million households.


U.S. Social gaming revenues are expected to surpass $1 billion for the first time this year, according to a new eMarketer estimate – up from $856 million in 2010. Virtual good purchases will make up a lion’s share of the $1.09 billion in revenue (63%). Nearly 62 million US internet users, or 27% of the online audience, will play at least one game on a social network monthly this year, up from 53 million in 2010.
Smartphone sales have surpassed feature phone sales in the U.S. for the first time, outselling their counterpart 55% to 45% in May, according to a new Nielsen survey. Android continues to be the most popular smartphone operating system, with 38% of smartphone consumers owning Android devices. But Android sales have flattened out in recent weeks while the Apple iPhone (27%) has shown more robust growth. RIM’s Blackberry remains in third place with 21% of installs.


has rolled out video calling to Android phones with the release of Skype for Android 2.0. With the new version, users will be able to make and receive free 1-to-1 video calls over Skype between their Android phone and other Skype contacts via the iPhone, Mac, Windows PCs and Samsung TVs.
Brooklyn, NY-based social TV site SocialGuide has launched a free iPhone and Android app that provides access to the site’s social programming guide, which ranks programs in order of their real-time social popularity as they air. The app also lets viewers interact with friends, fans, cast members and athletes as they watch their favorite programming.
Apple surpassed 100,000 iPad apps, including both apps designed to run only on the tablet or iPhone apps optimized to take advantage of the larger iPad screen.


Former OpenTable, PayPal and Ebay executive Jeffrey Jordon is joining Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz as the firm’s 5th General Partner. Jeffrey left his post as CEO of OpenTable after its IPO last month but will remain as Executive Chairman.

ABI Research hired former IMS Research analyst Craig Foster as Senior Analyst, Home Automation Systems. He is based at the firm’s Irthlingborough office in the UK.

President Obama is counting more on more on social media to get his messages across and solidify his persona as our most digitally savvy Commander in Chief yet. Next Wednesday from 11 am PT, he will participate in a Twitter Town Hall meeting moderated by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who will pepper the President with questions in front of two huge screens that will display tweets on the meeting in real time. Twitter will sift through questions using a proprietary platform powered by Mass Relevance. Users can begin posting questions immediately using the hashtag, #askobama. The topic at hand is the economy, stupid.
