All is good in the online advertising space as Google wowed investors Thursday reporting better-than-expected second quarter earnings, the first under the leadership of returning CEO Larry Page. Google earned $2.5 billion on revenues of over $9 billion during Q2, an increase of 36% and 32% from a year ago, respectively. Page told investors that there are now 10 million Google Plus users and that 1 billion items are already being shared on the new social network. Some 550,000 Android devices are being activated each day, with over 160 million overall Android users.


The vultures are already circling around Netflix to try to steal the company’s disenchanted customers. Blockbuster launched a special promotion inviting current Netflix customers to try the Blockbuster Total Access service free for 30 days. The plan comes with two price tiers, offering unlimited rentals 1 disc at a time for $10/mo. and two discs at a time for $15/month, including Blu-rays and game rentals. You can order discs by mail and drop them off anytime at a local Blockbuster outlet, if you’re lucky enough to still have one in your area.
Webcaster NeuLion reported a 31% increase in new subscriptions for its NHL GameCenter Live service, which was offered online, via OTT devices and an on Apple, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia mobile devices. NeuLion streamed just over 1,000 live NHL games this past season.
Hulu Plus has expanded its mobile integrations, adding HTC Evo 4G, HTC ThunderBolt and the HTC myTouch 4G and G2. The handsets join the Nexus One, Nexus S, HTC Inspire 4G, Motorola Droid II, Motorola Droid X and the Motorola Atrix in the Android Market.
Current TV is partnering with Sony Electronics to promote Project Shiphunt, an hour-long special that documents the search for shipwrecks on the bottom of Lake Huron using Sony VAIO laptops. Sony is also creating a classroom component for the special.
Reveille, Yahoo and Toyota are celebrating a milestone 300 episodes for the web series “Who Knew? On Yahoo News. The 90-second round-up, which has been spun off on OMG as a celebrity show, has been streamed more than 113 million times since its debut.


Harry Shearer’s eyebrow-raising documentary “The Big Uneasy” will be available via VOD, broadband and DVD nationwide beginning Aug. 16 through digital distribution label FilmBuff.


Burgeoning content network Glam Media (2,500 publishers, 94 million monthly uniques) is reinventing itself for the social age with the launch of a new content management system and a new social platform that makes it easy for authors to share their content.

  • Glam Create provides tools to authors, bloggers and journalists who want to syndicate their content out and package it with appropriate advertising. The model is launching with Bliss, a newly announced health and wellness vertical. Its channels will include Health, Wellness and Family & Moms
  • GlamConnect is a social network built especially for Glam contributors, enabling them to add social apps to their content, manage comments on multiple social networks and focus on building their social circles



The backend work on the UltraViolet initiative, launched by the major studio-backed Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE,) is finally completed and is ready for B2B deployment from the fall. The plan centers around rolling out a common file format that will enable customers to buy digital downloads online or from a retail locations such as Best Buy or Walmart and access them on the cloud from multiple devices. Initial UltraViolet licensees are now integrating with and beta testing the digital rights locker system, powered by Neustar.
The FBI has officially opened an investigation into the allegations that News Corp. journalists hacked into the phone records of 9/11 victims, according to a NYTimes report.


A new research study conducted by the Stanford Security Lab utilizing some “experimental software” found that the self-regulatory efforts of the Network Advertising Initiative is not working so hot. Over half of the NAI members tested did not remove tracking cookies from users computers after they expressly opted out of behavioral ad targeting. At least 8 of the 64 NAI members tested had promised users to stop tracking after they opted out but nonetheless left tracking cookies in place. Public interest group Consumer Watchdog pointed to the study to prod the FTC into investigating online advertising firms.
The Harry Potter Finale is going to set some records if pre-sales are any indication. Online ticket seller said more than 6,000 midnight shows are sold out on the website, and it has sold more tickets for midnight and early morning screenings of “Deathly Hallows – Part 2” than any other movie in its history., said it had sold out 4,500 screenings and that the movie appears to be headed toward becoming one of the top two advance sellers of all time.


Nintendo announced that Netflix subscription-based streaming is now available on the Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming device.
Popular real estate listings app Redfin has finally launched a version for Android devices, designed from the ground up to take advantage of the platform. Features include added listing details, full-price histories (still not available on the iPhone) and synchronization with the Redfin site to help manage favorite listings and notes.


Mobile advertising firm Amobee has tapped former Chief Innovation Officer and Board Member of Telefonica Europe PLC, Trevor Healy, as its new CEO. He the will remain a member of Amobee’s board and will continue to work as an advisor to Telefonica.
Fifteen-time NBA All-Star Shaquille O’Neal has joined Turner SportsNBA Analyst team on TNT and will also be a contributor to NBA TV and
MEC North America hired Dennis Donlin to the post of President, Team AT&T, effective immediately. Dennis will be based in New York and report directly to Lee Doyle, CEO of MEC North America.


Much buzzed about UK-based digital music service Spotify officially launched in the U.S. yesterday after signing its last major label licensing agreement with the Warner Music group. Spotify will offer the same three tiers of service it does in Europe: a free ad supported version (launch partners include Coke and Sprite, Chevrolet, Motorola and The Daily,) the online ad free Spotify Premium for $5/month and Spotify Unlimited for $10/month, which adds higher quality audio and mobile phone access. The service began accepting pre-registration email addresses for applicants to the free service last week but is available immediately if you want to pay. The desktop version is very clean and simple. Top hits and albums are featured on the overview page and when you see something you like you simply “star it” to add it to your music queue. You’ll see buttons proving access to your music library, including music stored in iTunes or playlists created within Spotify. “Related Artists” featured in the right hand corner of the screen, is a cool recommendation feature. You can also drag and drop songs onto a name on your list of friends to recommend tracks you like. The best part of Spotify is the breadth of its library – there are over 15 million songs to choose from.
