Good Morning. It’s Friday, July 14, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
USA Network has picked up the cable television rights from Buena Vista to air Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest in the fall of 2008. To date, the second Pirates film has brought in $183.7 million since its debut on July 7. If the license fee for the film were to run the traditional full 15% of total box office, today that fee would be in the $27 million range, tho several sources have suggested USA will be paying in the $20-$25m range. The difference will likely be made up with a broadcast partner. The network will premiere the original Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl tomorrow night at 8p.
Tonight’s Premieres:
Sci Fi: Stargate: SG-1 at 9p, Stargate Atlantis at 10p
TNT‘s premiere of anthology series Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King, airing commercial-free, delivered 2.5 million A18-49 and nearly 2.9 million A25-54 viewers, making it the #1 scripted cable series thus far this year. The second story which immediately followed the first, delivered 2.5 million A18-49 and 2.7 million A25-54 viewers, making it the #2 scripted series this year.
Wednesday’s premiere of Project Runway on Bravo was the network’s highest audience delivery so far this year in a couple of categories: Total Viewers with 2.4 million; A18-49 delivered 1.6 million viewers, and A18-34 delivered 915,000. Complementing Bravo’s run of the show, NBC will air two episodes from the new season on July 17 and 24, each at 8p.
Criss Angel Mindfreak will return for a third season on A&E with new episodes airing in 2007. Additionally, A&E has picked up a new reality series, Confronting Justice (wt) about what happens to those who are affected by a serious crime. The story is told first-hand and viewers will witness highly-charged face-to-face meetings between victim, family and offender. Produced by New Line Television in association with Cinemaria for A&E Network. And finally, CSI: Miami will begin airing weeknights on A&E as of September 4 at 8p.
MTV’s next venture into a documentary series starts August 23 at 1030p with Two-A-Days. Conceptualized by the network’s News & Docs Department, this series chronicles the 2005 football season of the Hoover High School Buccaneers of Hoover, Alabama, where football is not just a sport but a way of life. Each of the eight episodes ends in a big game, yet there’s plenty of action off the field before the kickoff. Viewers will be able to access exclusive content via MTV.com and the broadband network MTV Overdrive, and MTV Mobile will offer short-form eps from the MTV Overdrive After Show.
Also, returning to the small screen is Crack Yankers, formerly of MTV but returning to MTV2. The show features puppets making crack calls, and the network has ordered 60 from Jackhole Industries.
Inturn, the web-based reality boot camp show begins July 17 and will follow eight participants as they vie for a 13-week contract on CBS’ daytime drama As the World Turns. Each of the 3-5 minute episodes can be viewed via the Internet on innertube at CBS.com for three days a week for eight weeks, with 24 episodes in all. The eight contestants will move into a loft in Brooklyn together and maneuver through a series of challenges. Eventually five of the eight will be voted out by a group of judges. The three remaining hopefuls will be written into the soap as characters and viewers nationwide will vote for the final favorite.
It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the classic Hollywood crowd, and yesterday it lost another member. Red Buttons passed away at the age of 87. Buttons was born in New York City in 1919 as Aaron Chwatt. Buttons was a nickname given him while he was working as a singing bellhop at Dinty Moore’s Tavern in the Bronx. His first paying role was at the age of 16 when he performed in the Catskills as part of a comedy act with Robert Alda. Known as a comic, he was also a songwriter wtih hits songs Strange Things are Happening and The Ho-Ho Song. He had his own show on CBS in 1952, which lasted three years and earned him an Emmy for Best Comedian. Younger audiences may recall his role in the original Poseidon Adventure film, several appearances on The Love Boat and five appearances most recently on ER. A quote from Red Buttons: “Ninety isn’t old. You’re old when your doctor doesn’t X-ray you any more – he just holds you up to the light!”
Sci Fi Channel has cast Peter Krause in its limited series The Lost Room which is set to debut in December. The project is from Lionsgate Television, the story is about a detective who finds a motel room key – a key that opens a portal to another dimension. This project was originally titled Motel Man.
USA has ordered a cast-contingent pilot of To Love and Die in LA, from Lorne Michaels, Sarah Goodman and NBC Universal TV Studio. The story is the ageless tale of a young woman looking for the father who abandoned her as a small child. The twist comes when she learns he is a hired assassin, and as it turns out, she may end up following in daddy’s footsteps.
More soap in primetime with Lifetime‘s Bianca: Journey to Paradise and the recent castings of Shirley Jones, Rachel Ward and Simon Rex. Virginia Williams will play the title role. Bianca will debut in October, airing on Saturdays at 10p.
The SCI FI Channel has in development several new original series and late-night offerings. Scripted Series:
- Painkiller Jane is a title you’ve heard about before from Sci Fi – it’s about a superhero Marine who can heal herself, which is a pretty handy specialty. The network has ordered 22 episodes.
- Devil’s Advocate, a one-hour thriller from Executive Producer Mark Burnett and Dreamworks Television, about a theology professor who delves into the world of secret societies, religious espionage and genetic research. From NBC Universal Television Studios.
- Witch Doctor, a dramedy based on the comic book series The Tick from Ben Edlund, that combines medicine and the supernatural.
- Stoner, from Jeff Kline, about a slacker in L.A. who is mistaken for a superhero and must either cover up his lack of powers or reveal the truth.
Late Night:
- George Noory, host of the national overnight radio talk show, Coast to Coast AM, George Noory brings his explorations into the paranormal to TV.
- Alien Invasion, a computer-animated comedy from Dave Goetsch, that follows two hard-up aliens and their attempts to take over the world from Venice, CA.
- Prove It, from Mark DeCarlo and game/reality show host Mark Walberg, a panel discussion, hosted by DeCarlo, to prove or disprove bizarre sci-fi theories.
In Development:
- Outpost, a miniseries, is an adventure series story about a group of private explorers in the future who find an abandoned NASA research base and use it to travel to a distant planet to start a new colony only to discover an ancient artifact. It is executive produced by Lynda Obst and produced by astronomer David Grinspoon.
Casting Call: Nashville Star on USA Network returns for a fifth season in search of America’s next country music star. Open auditions for the show will happen across the U.S. and the official dates, locations and rules will be announced at http://www.usanetwork.com/nashvillestar/ on August 1.
Production has begun on Floaters from Phoebeworks Productions, Inc., a new series developed exclusively for broadcast on the internet and for mobile phones. The dramedy follows the romantic and professional ups and downs of three young NY women, a la Sex and the City and Desperate Housewives. The first season of the episodic series will consist of 15 half-hour weekly episodes. Each episode will have 5 mini parts, airing every weekday on the internet. Mobile episodes will be shortened further into three 2-minute segments, which makes them more suitable for mobile phone viewing. One full episode can be viewed each week by going online and watching the daily segments via computers or by watching the shorts on mobile phones. Look for the online episodes to begin at the end of this month with the mobile shorts following soon thereafter.

1881-Sheriff Pat Garrett shoots William Bonney, popularly known as Billy the Kid, to death at the Maxwell Ranch in New Mexico. With as many as 17 murders to his name by the age of 18, Billy the Kid was arrested by Garrett, brought to trial, and sentenced to death. He escaped from jail, and Garrett, after tracking him for three months, received a tip about his hideout, waited in Billy’s darkened bedroom, and shot the fugitive to death at close range.
